Massively's in-depth interview with SWTOR Community Manager Stephen Reid

Nov 18th 2010 1:41PM (Massively)
I think this comment by the interviewer is the real key:

"So really, you're putting the RPG back into MMORPGs."

Bioware is making an RPG in an MMO environment. So many other games in the MMO category seem much closer to MMOFPS style games (whether they use guns or swords) with little role-play.

All of the decisions about game mechanics that the devs are making are aimed at advancing the storyline in a meaningful way, allowing the player to immerse themselves in the world, to role-play their character.

Hyperspace Beacon: Managed crafting

Confirming this per the SWTOR forum:

Every player gets three crew skill slots. Only one of those can be a crafting skill (but doesn't have to be), and that crafting skill is in one specialized area (armor type, weapon sub-group, etc.).

EVE Online ship insurance changes to come with Tyrannis

Mar 30th 2010 6:10PM (Massively)
One of the reasons they haven't prevented insurance payouts to players destroyed by Concord is in deference to the noobs who don't know they can't shoot other players in high-sec.

It may not be a great reason, but it is a reason.

EVE Evolved: Trade hubs of New Eden - Caldari and Minmatar page 2

The Gallente system would definitely be Dodixie, and probably Oursulaert as an alternate.

Alentene has some decent market activity at the moment, but it seems like most of that is coming from the Red v Blue perma-war. Frig to cruiser sized ships and modules go pretty well, but bigger than that and it's not so hot.

The Daily Grind: Do you MMO with relatives?

Sep 22nd 2009 11:58AM (Massively)
My brother-in-law and I used to play when our schedules allowed. Not so much anymore.
We actually have a husband and wife team that leads our corp (guild) in EVE. They come on after dinner and putting their sons in bed and play for a few hours on most nights.

Why you should be playing EVE Online: One server, one universe

In regards to your comment on training times: I have the exact opposite complaint about the other popular fantasy MMOs. If I want a high level character, I have to devote huge amounts of playing time pushing and grinding to get my character's level up, and I don't seem to get to experience much of the world that way.
My playing time is very infrequent. I love the EVE skill training system. If I can't play for 4 days, no problem. I will still have a new skill when I return. It's even better now that they have implemented a skill queue.

The Daily Grind: How do you choose your MMOs?

Apr 13th 2009 2:13PM (Massively)
With as many different types of MMO games that are out there, there has to be one for every type of gamer (or one in development).

I love crafting and exploration. I tried WoW for a while, but fell away from it in the mid levels. A friend told me about EVE. I looked in to it and checked out the free trial. It was hard to figure out for the first few days, but I could see the potential and stuck with it. I am now thoroughly hooked. I love the concept of PvP on an economic level. It's not always about killing the other guy (for me).

I plan on checking out SWTOR with some friends, but I don't expect it to hold me for the long term.

EVE developers to hold a meet and greet in Las Vegas

Feb 18th 2009 12:32PM (Massively)
The Imperial Palace may not be elegant, but it is cheap. Most of the other places in Vegas are pricing themselves out of the casual visitor range. Besides, you don't have to eat or stay at the IP. Everything else on the Strip is within walking distance.
