Some Assembly Required: A Mortal Online interview

Jan 28th 2012 10:32AM (Massively)
@Roibeirt how much of those features actually, you know...work?

If the game saw marked improvement people who were keeping an eye on it would start to trickle back enough to counter the trolls. You can see that in their Darkfall forums, for one, where plenty of people will defend or point out misconceptions. Lord knows that anyone who preordred MO would be happy as hell if the stuff worked finally, regardless of past experiences. MMO fans can be very much like abused spouses in that regard.

MO's constant vibe seems to be a company struggling to make basic features even work.

@(Unverified) has there been a dev ever that hasn't abused us recently?

Behind the Mask: Throwing stones at their glass houses

Jan 27th 2012 11:23AM (Massively)
It's okay, but I think I'm done with CO. They can add all the powersets they like, but they haven't added anything to endgame since vibora bay that's worth playing through more than once in a group. It's a game where you get population spikes with any update at all, but is horrible long term.

The Daily Grind: Do you want a 'fair' fight?

Jan 26th 2012 10:35AM (Massively)
@Kalex716 problem with eve though is that because of the unfair nature, people almost always avoid PvP when possible unless they have overwhelming advantage, leading to dull encounters. There's no incentive in that game to engage a solo ship that warps in on you because chances are they are bringing their friends in to join the fight.

PvP in that game quickly looks less like fun and more like a tax for the loser to play the PvE game. And to get successful PvP, you HAVE to ignore the winners and focus on ways to motivate the losers to keep playing.

Taun-taunts: Damion Schubert teases future SWTOR vanity pets

Jan 20th 2012 9:34PM (Massively)
Why vanity pets? They dont fit in with star wars at all, and I can't see a bounty hunter having a superdeformed tauntaun following him around. If they talk about story and immersion vanity pets break it. Really, it sounds more like they want to be WoW than their own game.

Pathfinder Online takes a look at death

Jan 19th 2012 2:40PM (Massively)
@corpusc I read that article, but there's simply too much we don't know about the game to make any judgements. If its a gold-heavy crafting game, any loss or destruction of items will hurt. If quest items aren't immune from looting or destruction you've just managed to hold up progression even more in addition to ganking's effects on lost gold or crafting mats.

You are hoping, man, and that what has led to the rush of the hardcore to anything that promises stuff, and it's burned them. Your best bet would be to get into beta fast so you can see, because imo it's probably going to repeat darkfall more than solve its problems.

SWTOR's new patch makes a mess, BioWare looking into it [Updated]

Jan 19th 2012 10:47AM (Massively)
@Daemodand Isn't this the truth. Every single PvP game I've been in has always had issues like this. There's never really been one where I could say "Man, this is harsh but its balanced right." There's always been exploits, serious imbalances, FOTM, glitches, etc.

Pathfinder Online takes a look at death

Jan 19th 2012 10:28AM (Massively)
@corpusc depends on other factors though. Stuff like item wearing out, whether or not you need items for quests, if rare items drop from mobs, and the ingame economy could make this pretty harsh indeed. Also, how exp is gained-if it's done through questing and hubs the losses can add up just because you can't escape gankers.

And keep in mind in a game like Aion you lose almost nothing in real terms, but the inability to progress itself can drive people away.

Ask Massively: No idea what's coming edition

Jan 13th 2012 5:05AM (Massively)
@pid Actually 2010-2011 were the years that indie MMORPGs as a concept started to die. It used to be the next big thing was supposed to be indie FFA PvP sandboxes, but game after game failed to ship, or shipped with so many issues or bugs that it disenchanted a lot of people.

Mortal Online, Darkfall, Dawntide, Xyson, Perpetuum, and Earth Eternal's death are a few of the things that made this trend. Some had to be rescued: Fallen Earth only survives by being acquired and turned into F2P.

I think 2012 is going to be the year of stagnation. the big MMOs like TOR, GW2, and Rift will continue to lead the market, while bit players will fight out for scraps as F2P games or stagnate with a stable population of top-heavy vets like in EVE.

Behind the Mask: The dangers of roleplaying as an outlet

Jan 13th 2012 5:00AM (Massively)
@JuliusSeizure the problem though is if you RP a jerk, people need to RP like you are a jerk.Who chooses to hang out with a jerk in rl? Unless you can make the jerk with several redeeming features, it can be very tedious to play with them.

His second point I take more issue with. If he's taking about Club Caprice, the point of that place is to be open RP. People will actually Rp with you. Can it be a bit much? Yeah, if the guy is too much of a bore. But I get the feeling pat would be better served just staying and RPing in SG if that's an issue. I know most RPers are starved for any kind of public interaction there.
