Second Life's Emerald client facing obsolescence

Aug 26th 2010 3:34PM (Massively)
btw, i don't think "obsolescence" is the word you're looking for, and storing information in image metadata (or even if they stored it with steganographicly in the image itself) isn't all that hack-tacular

I knew there were some shady people in the team, i still have faith on the good people there though

Do they give any reason why they don't make things way more customizable? I mean, other than "newbies will get confused"

Why don't you make a book and release it as PDF or somthing? I think there is some services out there that will print and ship books on demand so people that want a hardcopy will pay some money and you and the printing service will profit :)

i was thinking more about it being avaiable for historical purposes, SL is/was quite a significant event in the history of virtual worlds

i wonder if we'll ever see the source for Linden World

The Daily Grind: Should early adoption bonuses be purchasable later?

Jun 13th 2010 4:40AM (Massively)
I think the ideal solution would be to have the freebies for early adopters and the alike material that is made avaiable for a price later one were not exactly alike, the two versions being clearly distinguishable, even if the functionality/benefit provided is the same; this way early adopters still have somthing unique and people that feel like giving (more) money to the company can get the mass produced version that does just about the same.

The Virtual Whirl: The bottom line

Indeed the rent-a-voice thing seems to be justified by this, well, unless the hit in their pockets from selling L$ isn't significant enough; but i'm still against that approach either way, they need to work on helping the economy grow, not just try to make people give them more money directly. But of course, increasing the desirability of existing services, like sim renting and the stuff associated with premium accounts, would also be a good idea.

Yet another sign that could be interpreted as LL going down....

The Virtual Whirl: Is one hour enough to be considered an active user?

Jun 5th 2010 6:54PM (Massively)
metrics that would be more useful to get a feel of environment in question and who goes there would be things like what people do while they are logged, for how long, how often they come back, duration of each session etc

Besides the stuff about how people dedicate their time, i guess things like unspun economic data, analysis about the newbies that try for a while but don't stay, stuff like people that join and keep comming to become permanent/recurrent users, if possible, stuff about everyone's life outside of the environment in question (nationality, what games they play, what they work on, age, income, likes and dislikes etc)

Saying an active user is anyone that has 60+ minutes logged per month seems too arbitrary, i'm not sure if an "active user" can be defined solely on that single measurement, specially for just one month
