To clears some stuff up: Gold is not sold in the Turbine store of DDO. Buying gold is illegal there.
TWO: DDO is different than most MMOs. ..Active combat system...THis is NOT WoW turn based and takes so time to get use to. ..DDO has no PvP worth talking about. ..The game very much encourages party based play. Getting parties iseasy. ..Level cap is 20 for both F2P and Vip (sub) players ..Instances are the name of the game. Virtually no ganking in thegame. Classes are unbalanced...on purpose. If you choose a class, you will pay for it in another place. ..Multi-classing is availible. ..Items have less importance than how the character is built. For example: strip two level 20 Rogues down and you can have two differnent builds both are useful at endgame. Items make it easier, but there isn't a need to have "THIS" for most things, andthe stuff you do "need" usually can be found on other items other than named. ..Crafting well, the only type we have is kinda like third age weapons in LotRO. Not sure if WoW has such a system. .. The average F2P can get to level 12-14 fairly easily. After that, Adventure packs are needed to be purchased at the Turbine Store. Fortunally you can earn enough points without buying any points with real money. Well enough for one adventure pack that can get you to twenty (hint, hint Vale ofTwilight). Getting everything for free, is a grind. ..One level of DDO = 4 to 5 levels in WoW. ..All races can do all classes. However, some are more suited for certain classes than others. ..not all races/classes are available for F2P. But some can be earned by favour and others you will have to buy to play. ..It's FREE. Really.
And it seems to be working, this F2P model. There have been some hiccups and and some bumps, but mostly it has been fun. To early to say, but if Turbine pulls this off, they may change how AAA MMOs will be put out in the Future. Heck, some are already doing that. Cyrptic's Star Trek Online already had a store set up. Nothing really in it when I played. But it was there.
Finally, most ofthe items in Turbine's store are not game changing. They are perks. Alot you can get via the game itself for free, but many use the store for convienance.
