Why I Play: EVE Online

@Daeths

If it was a level one mission, either you had an utterly silly fit or you didn't read the mission requirements. Back to the drawing board! For lvl one missions, anything destroyer sized or larger with a decent active tank (damage control, eanm and medium armor rep for example) should more than do it. if you are paying attention, 9/10 lvl one missions are doable in a frigate.

Read up a little on fitting theory and make sure you know how modules work and when to use them. If you've unsubbed because lvl one missions are too hard, I'm pretty sure that's not going to be recognized as a valid complaint, even for the most bitter eve critics.

The shininess of the ships you're willing to lose scales with your earning power and skills as a pilot. Early on, I remember having a hell of a time putting together a few million isk for a cruiser, but now 30m is 10 minutes of work or less.

I can now justify putting a ship like a stealth bomber, interceptor or t2 destroyer on the line without having to give it much thought at all. These days I regularly fly force recon ships and heavy assault cruisers (200m+ fitted with t2 mods) into high-risk areas and can justify the risk. The recon ship affords me a degree of survivability; I can cloak and evade enemies and effectively hide or otherwise escape from an overwhelming threat. The HAC, on the other hand, will usually pay for itself in a day or two of 0.0 work, so if I lose it down the line, I've usually come out on top.

For a new player, a cruiser well fitted with t1 mods and some basic skills will set you back 4-6 million at jita market prices, but with insurance and a little forethought, the net cost of these ships will surprise you. In my early days, I fitted a blaster thorax pretty poorly, but still managed to bank 20m in ratting bounties and bag a couple kills in lowsec before I lost the boat. Losing that cruiser to a gatecamp was disappointing, but I came away with some hard-earned experience, and the satisfying feeling that I still came out ahead.

As for never using the shinier gear, you have a point. There are some extremely rare ships in eve that you'll almost never see out of station, but expensive (i.e. faction, officer, etc.) modules do see a lot of use these days in the lawless areas of space. The odds of ship loss are much lower when you fly in a properly supported fleet, and that's when you really start to see the expensive stuff getting used. Of course it's not a great idea to fly a fitted ship worth billions of isk solo through unfamilliar territory, but you'll absolutely find pilots putting these kinds of fits on the line in high-security missions and incursions.

Anyway, I might not be able to convince you to give eve another go, and I totally get where you're coming from, but once my brain really clicked with the death penalty and palpable sense of risk, I was hooked. Just trying to get that point across.

Fair enough!

Although, I should say that part of the enjoyment in Eve is taking /appropriate/ risks. It takes a while to know what is and isn't dangerous, and really have a sense of when you're vulnerable. If you lose a ship that cost you 3/4 of your wallet and took you a month to put together, I can absolutely see that turning off a new player. But if you had purchased and 10 fit smaller, more cost effective ships that you all but planned to lose, you might see it differently.

so you played it a total three times and weren't satisfied that no one responded in kind to "i like the station graphics!" in jita local? to me, that's not really a measure of a game's community. But the best part:

"I can't tell you how many times I got told "Go play WoW" for simply expressing something like liking the graphics in the stations... Eventually I left, went back to WoW..."

1) Show me the 'droves.'

2) points for vulgarity aside, some of the more successful/rich dudes I play with put in an average of 10 hours a week. This seems pretty reasonable to me, and I'm averaging about 6. So, wrong again! I haven't however asked them how much they masturbate or how much meth they snort, so I'll get back to you.

Ugh, go away. If you put as much energy into anything as you put into poorly trolling every eve article, you might do something with your life.

'Essentially' you need to read a little more than the books you were assigned in high school English class. If what you're referring to is the FFA pvp, player-driven economy, and game mechanics that support the lore of the eve universe, then maybe you're on the right track.

It's a sad, sad day when the nonsensical garbage you write gets voted up. I think this is what Brendan is calling disheartening. I am inclined to agree.
