Mmkay. I've been following Tera for awhile now and that site is the only one that consistently updates with new info. Feel free to point out some others, otherwise I smell a troll.
I only wish you hadn't nailed the truth so completely. Because of all the lemmings lining up to pay for this thing, mmo's just took another step away from virtual worlds and towards disposable, recycled entertainment for dummies.
It's so depressing how this genre started out with so much promise and has devolved so completely into the internet equivalent of reality television.
Ah well, on to the next visionary nerd pasttime while it lasts.
I always laugh (and then throw up in my mouth a little) whenever someone says "well you don't have to buy it."
That applies to generic mmo's, but it doesn't apply to heavy-hitting IP's like SW, Trek, Tolkien, etc. If you're a huge fan of one of these properties, and you're also a fan of mmo's, well yes you do have to buy it, and you have to choke down whatever butchery the developers force-feed you.
Sure I could not buy STO, I'll just go play those other Trek mmos. Oh wait....
M the sheep: "ahh, more elitism, more "the wealthy have, and should have greater rights then anyone else"
Learn to read please, and refrain from putting words in my mouth. No where did I say the wealthy have or should have greater rights. I simply said they, by definition, have more money and the options that that opens up to them. How they got that money is really none of my (or your) business, and if they came by it dishonestly, they'll answer for it at some point. Assuming that 'the vast majority' of rich people inherited their wealth is a hysterical projection. You have absolutely zero factual or statistical information to back that up, it's just a gut feeling you have and of course like most liberals, you never let facts or logic get in the way of your feelings.
I'm what most people would consider poor in terms of my annual income and my creature comforts. I don't delude myself into thinking that I somehow deserve better, or that everyone who has more than me must've cheated to get it. My circumstances are a result of choices that I've made, and I accept responsibility for them, which is something that brainwashed liberals like yourself are incapable of doing.
Keep bad-mouthing Christians though, as well as conservatives and whoever else doesn't fall into line with your intellectually misguided group-think orgy of irresponsibility. It's doing wonders for the economy and the future of this nation.
No one said capitalism is pure and right. It is simply the best system that imperfect, corrupt, and inherently greedy human beings can hope to achieve. Would it be great if everyone were equal, got along, and were happy? Yes it would, but that will never happen in this life because of human nature, and so the best you can do is reward the people who are willing to work hard and achieve, not sit on their ass and collect handouts.
The logical fallacy of liberalism is that it assumes a perfect system run by perfect people, and if you think such a thing is even remotely possible, you're even dumber than your post illustrated.
Chris: "It is really funny how you guys care so much that you are putting Free Realms down. Like some how you are invested in how much money it makes or your current MMO is under attack because they have 5 million users and your MMO only has 300,000??
You guys make no sense unless you work for some MMO company."
No, it actually makes perfect sense if you've followed the industry for more than six months. Sony's online games division has a history of dubious customer service, shoddy management of sure-fire IP's, and even a clear-cut bait and switch (Trials of Obi-Wan).
People have long memories, and a lot of gamers don't like what SOE did to EQ, and then to SWG, and so they root for them to fail and chortle when they crow about numbers that don't really mean anything. Kinda human nature to root against those you perceive as the bad guy.
If anything doesn't make sense here, it's you defending SOE, unless you work for them. If you're just a consumer that enjoy their games, good for you and go play them. But don't act surprised when people who have been burned by them in the past enjoy a few snickers at their expense.
Nasq: "Out-of-game wealth should have nothing to do with how you play in-game."
Why, do mmo's somehow exist outside the normal rules of capitalism?
Here's a fun fact about the real world: more money means you have more options available to you, and no amount of the wealth-envy that's currently in vogue will change that fact. If people want to run 16 accounts and can pay for it, more power to them. There's nothing unfair about it, provided they earned their money honestly.
I don't think the Icarus devs are really concerned about competing with Aion or luring the type of people inclined to play it. I'm sure there are a few like me who've paid for both, but by and large you won't find two more dissimilar target audiences.
Provided they've got a little money in the bank, they can weather a tiny launch and grow over time, perhaps even picking up some of the folks who eventually realize what limited options there are in Aion and it's ilk.
Thanks for the Fallen Earth coverage, really glad to see Massively giving this game the spotlight on occasion, as it serves a very under-represented niche within the genre and was clearly built with a lot of love.
Is it buggy? Yeah, it reminds me of early SWG both in terms of mechanics and bugs, but I earnestly hope these guys get enough support to keep it going and continue to give those of us who no longer have the stomach for theme parks a game to call home.
