Note that the LOTRO items are not brand-new to the game, but they are new for the store. You've been able to get these exact items every year for Pirate Days past via the special quest.
Nice write-up! I spent that first evening setting up my new UI and plugins on three characters, while also walking several kin-mates through the process over Vent. Honestly the plugins are the unsung hero of this update in my opinion... I've noticed a HUGE difference in the way I play the game ever since I got up and running with things like BuffBars and Palantir.
Slight correction here. Although at first it may appear to a total of +50 to a stat because of the way its worded in the store, it's actually only +30 if you buy all three tomes. The store lists the cumulative bonus from the tomes (probably to help distinguish between the three tiers) so you'd think it would be a +10 tome, a +20 tome, and a +30 tome. However, it's actually just a +10, then another +10, then a third +10.
I was subbed to LOTRO for two and a half years, quit last Christmas right before SoM launched because I was generally tired of the way the game was going (I was in the SoM beta so I wasn't terribly excited about the new stuff either).
I'd played a couple of their recent free weekends and was toying with the idea of resubbing for the summer. Now this hits and I think I might actually do it, since the benefits for long-time subscribers are pretty generous.
Personally this is perfect for me. If I get serious about playing it sometime, I can resub as a VIP member. If I get tired of it, I can drop to premium and just play on occasion for no cost.
My biggest concern remains the potential effect on the community. Hopefully after things settle down, maybe by next year sometime, the community will settle down to a reasonable size and the F2P people will be more settled in. This fall will likely be chaotic, but I'm actually looking forward to it.
