Kids do dumb things. They need to learn their lessons, definitely, so that they become productive adults and valuable members of society. That doesn't make them "scum" -- who DIDN'T do dumb things when they were kids?

Yes, self-esteem matters, but it will go up when he realizes that what he does matters, and then makes good choices, rather than thinking anything he does is okay. This world is rough and if you're gonna make it, you've gotta be tough.
(C) All that notwithstanding, if you feel bad about saying rude things to an eleven-year-old, that might also provide a lesson in how you communicate with adults.
So I'm somewhere between Robin and Lisa on this one. On the one hand, I don't think the kid will suffer anything like long-term harm (and may well benefit). On the other hand, I definitely think Remorseful should possibly examine how he communicates in general. Only he knows the full situation, of course, but being kind and respectful while still firm and resolute is always a good choice.
