I was in the previous beta and I gotta say it was the worst interface I've ever seen for an online game. I spent a bunch of time on it, but never even figured out how to start a mission. There are very few useful tips/hints on how the interface works and plenty of it wasn't even translated into English.
I gotta say that I think this guy's actions, alone, will be more detrimental to the growth of EVE than Monocle-gate was. Who wants to sign up to play a game where the players' chosen representative shows publicly that he's a griefer and a dick?
@Neiloch I thought their necromancer, cleric, and disciple were awesome. Haven't seen bards done quite like this before or since, either. Great potential with game, but a bad launch with tons of bugs and performance problems, combined with a much slower leveling rate and a world that's not very solo-friendly, didn't get it many long term players.
I've avoided consoles like the plague. They just always seemed like one of those things that should just be for kids. But I'm sooo tempted to for DUST.
D'ancy worked at CCP for 3 years, so he saw the potential of a game like EVE. He's basically taking the design of EVE and trying to apply it to a fantasy MMO. He's attracted to Pathfinder because it's been gaining market share against 4th edition D&D (owned by WotC) AND because, allegedly, without D'ancy there could be no Pathfinder RPG. (he allegedly was the architect of the Open Game License that was created when WotC bought and published 3rd edition D&D) I think such a "sandbox" model can work for a fantasy MMO, but I agree with the other posters that Pathfinder seems an odd IP for such an MMO.
I'm having fun with RIFT since I recently re-subbed, but I gotta admit that one of the early reviews still kinda rings true: "it's well done, but this game has no SOUL."
I think their mistake was putting in content that wasn't stereotypical fantasy stuff. For example, there are no orcs in the game. That's odd. Everyone who's played a fantasy game or seen a big-budget fantasy movie has seen orcs as the enemy. This gives the game a bit of the feel like it's one of those Asian MMOs that was ported to the West. It was ported well, but the flavor and content feels...a little like it didn't translate well.
@Equillian Ya know, maybe it didn't catch on well because they seem to like to use non-words like, "innovativeness." There's a reason most people on the web know the phrase "All your baser belong to us," only as something to laugh about.
The Daily Grind: Which MMO doesn't get the respect it deserves?
Apr 3rd 2012 1:54PM (Massively)Yeah, I thought that was an odd description, too. It's usually considered one of the more "hardcore" MMOs out there.
