well if you look at the mastery lines they only buff like 4-5 of your abilities(plus the extras you get in the line) and just using shammy as an example the healing path doesn't buff your HOT and your small heal+hot spell.
Basically what I'm getting at is just because you spec one thing doesn't make your other path's skills useless like some MMOs
