Wow, I was so shocked that I had to read the article twice to make sure it was real and not just some momentary lapse of sanity. This will be an interesting train wreck to watch. Not that I had any hope for the Marvel MMO anyway when they announced that you wouldn’t be able to make your own characters.
If this were a budget priced game I'd buy it just for fun. No way I'm paying 40+ dollars though. I expect a huge price drop not long after release followed by a PTP/FTP hybrid pay system shortly thereafter.
I think that Cryptic has come a long way. While the terrible launches of COH and STO are inexcusable, they have been updating like mad and the games are now both a couple of decent MMO's. The thing that encourages me about this studio is the frequency in which they update and add new content.
I played Champions Online at launch and it was a disaster. Now I'm actually having a great time and loving the weekly comic series. I've only played STO a little, but once this update goes live I'm going to try it out with my wife. Now we'll see if they learned their lesson when Neverwinter comes out.
Wow, this sounds awfull. It sounds like an online action game which is cool for those who are interested in that kind of thing, but I was hoping for a real mmorpg. FTP? You can't make your own charecters? No thanks.
I was really looking forward to this one. :( Oh well, there are plenty of other promising MMO's in development.
While I am not a fan of Champions Online I really think they did a great job on their FTP model. You are restricted in power choice, (which in Vanguard would amount to having to pay for some races and classes) but you can reach max level without having to pay a dime. You have to pay for costume pieces, adventure packs ect, but by going FTP they made it even better to be a subscriber than ever before. (you got more perks.) Future western style mmo's that decide to go FTP should take a hard look at CO.
Anyhow, since we are dreaming here are some ideas for a profitable FTP Vanguard -
FTP players can pick from 5 classes and five races, the rest can be unlocked via cash shop.
XP/Trade Skill/Diplomacy potions in the item shop.
Vanity Armor in item shop.
Vanity mounts plus flying mounts in item shop.
Reset skill point potions.
Item storage limit + gold limit to be unlocked via cash shop.
End game Dungeons/ability to receive xp/loot from end game world bosses must be unlocked via cash shop.
And I'm sure there's more.
Could SOE do it? Yeah, I'm sure they could. Sadly, they won't. In my opinion Vanguard will be shut down around the time that the EQ Next closed beta is supposed to begin. Vanguard is a superior MMO in comparison to EQ2 as well as many other MMO's out there, but EQ is Sony's flag ship fantasy MMO and the the fact that Vanguard has not received any sort of update in over a year now is quite telling.
If you haven’t played it and you're looking for something different you should check out Vanguard while it's still around. There's more content in that MMO than you can shake a stick at and all the classes are all very creative and unique. Plus it's only 15 bucks with a great community.
As an example - (Sorry for the music if you're like me. It's still worth a look.)
Don't forget the incest! If this game is really based on the Old Testament it's going to be the sickest, most twisted game ever. MA rating for sure.
As an Atheist I don't believe in any of that stuff of course, but I think Jesus' message is cool and I like that part of the Bible. The Old Testament is nuts though.
