The Digital Continuum: In pursuit of immersion

Oct 12th 2009 3:26PM (Massively)
only way you will get total immersion in that it doesnt feel like a game anymore, is technology such as the holodeck on star trek. for me at least, theres immersion levels that will never exist because i have the barriers such as 2d monitor and keyboard/mouse, im never really IN the game. im playing the game from an obsever point of view basically.

until you can truly be part of the game in every sense that makes going outside or going into the next room real to you, immersion will only ever be extremely limited at best. for the current technology in gaming immersion is definitely subjective. but i think most ppl would agree they only feel like they are playing the game and not ever really PART of the game. even in single player games, where your actions affect outcomes more, you still are staring at a screen and controlling an avatar nothing like you in a world that you can only experience visually.

The Daily Grind: Popcorn or full course meal?

One Shots: Volatilis solus

my relevant hardware/software:
geforce 8800GT
4 GB Ram
Windows vista home premium x64
intel core 2 Quad

Hmm. yeah i played the beta, full settings, and in windowed mode, was getting no less than 30fps. i typically ran in between 30-50fps.

many things running in the background can affect your performance: spyware, excess services, viruses, background running programs, virus scans. or other poor computer etiquette that results in bottlenecked computer performance.

i consider myself a mid to low-high end gamer, and there is no game out right now that entices me to upgrade to geforces upper tier graphics cards. but that is relevant to me only i know.

good luck in finding a balance for those that have problems.

The Daily Grind: If presented the opportunity to cheat, would you?

Aug 26th 2009 8:29AM (Massively)
i wouldn't cheat. but i dont know if i'd report it either. mainly out of laziness, i admit. i really dont think cheating in games, multiplayer or not really affects the big picture, probably because i think most people dont do it. ( maybe thats just me trying to see good nature in most people)

i think finding a weakness and exploiting it, no matter what it is, is a primal instinct of humans, to survive, but now it it used for all sorts of things. theres a time and place for it - enlightenment is only the way to realize when it is appropriate or not, i believe, some people are hard-coded to never be enlightened, thus the result of these sorts.

Anti-Aliased: Do you actually want to play the game anymore?

Aug 7th 2008 3:23PM (Massively)
Well, imo most people, at least in WoW, don't talk in the forums, and dont chat period. at least not in general chat. therefore, the ones that feel the way you're describing are a vocal minority, i like the journey, as long as it isnt as nadril put it "carrot-on-a-stick max level in front of me".

I believe, imo again, this is the general consensus of the majority. and the ppl that whine and complain and want things all easy represent a fraction of the opinions of the whole.

Wow for example, 10m subscribers...how many of them are really on the forums and chatting in general? not even a million i bet. (not that i have any facts to support this claim) :P
