@vtravi Game hardly has a "ton" of bugs. The few I've encountered have been very minor and easily worked around. Try reading the official forums instead of ... whatever... forum you read. Like any mmo there are negative posts but for the most part they are positive.
It's a success, deal with it and move on.... or go back to your "perfect" WoW.
@yeppers Well this former WoW player isn't going to buy it. To me it just seemed a sad attempt for Blizzard to try and recoup income losses from the dropping WoW sub numbers.
@GreatWolfFenris I agree with other posters that the "only" 10.2 million number is misleading. Probably about 60% of the subs are in Asia, though that number was from way back in 2008. Blizzard is going to have to start considering merging servers soon. The Finder and Cross-Server Battleground queue aren't affected but if you want to do any normal questing that's going to become an issue.
Earth & Beyond. It was a great space game developed by the now defunct Westwood. EA killed it with lack of support, both for advertising and in game content. There is a community that kept it alive via an emulator I've heard but never tried it.
I wonder how many of those 1 million yearly subs are actually gold farmer accounts. Since D3 will have a RMT, there is potential there for them to grind out another cash flow. Although 1 million surely is a lot, I wonder about less than 10% of their subs actually took them up on that offer.
What Wrath really did was just help maintain the status quo. Cats was rather disappointing I heard. Combine that with Rift's release and the sub bleeding began. Doubtful pandas will help Blizzard much as their doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz around that expansion. Most likely the pandas will just slow the bleeding down a bit.
WoW probably has a large foundation of players. These are the people in any mmo that will never quit for various reasons. With GW2 and TSW coming out the bleeding will continue but I expect it will never drop below 2-3 million.
What I find amazing is how Blizzard showed a demo of D3 two years ago and then now is owning up to "sorry we scripted it". It's been 12 years since the release of the last Diablo, WHY is it taking so long?
Oh well, Torchlight 2 will be my game of choice instead.
It's amazing how even when they release numbers, the haters start picking it apart on how they're not really the Right Numbers. Their subs are going up, I remember that it broke 1 million after the first week. Now they are at 1.7 million, that's a gain no matter how you try to twist and interpret their numbers.
Obviously you're going to get more people around the holidays when more people are off. As the year progresses I would expect them to continue to gain subs. Espeically since they rolled out new content after 1 month. Unlike WoW where you get 3 major patches total in the entire cycle of an expansion, games like Rift and (probably) SWTOR are adding content at a faster rate to keep players engaged.
@MtthwRddl Since the focus of the game is Story, they need to focus on that. Now with patch 1.1 they did expand on an existing operation and add a new 50 flashpoint. However, the selling point of swtor has always been the Story.
A decent video, well made too. The problem though is someone uniformed could watch this and come to the incorrect conclusion that online games are addictive and bad.
Anything can be addictive. It's all about choice. Do people play WoW like he did? Of course they do. There are many more that don't as well.
Part of the problem is the way Blizzard made the game. Overloading with raid content, endless rep grinding and other time sinks. This is probably why so many want the days of vanilla, when I didn't need several hours to run a dungeon or weeks of rep grinding to buy a blue bracer.
