Are all MMOs just extended vaporware?

Nov 2nd 2008 6:45PM (Massively)
No, because that's not the definition of vaporware. But yeah, everything's finite, including MMOs. Whether the IP lives on.. well we haven't seen it do that yet. But it could, there's tie-ins to lots of other things these days as well. And of course some MMOs are based off an IP, which will carry on.

"Games that can be rendered useless due to mismanagement, poor sales or just bad luck" goes for offline games and, frankly, any product out there as well. That's not exclusive to MMOs. In fact, not a lot is, however serious we take ourselves.

The releasing sourcecode so the game can live on is a nice idea, but it's not always viable in reality. I don't think there's a lot of MMOs out there who own everything they've used, plus it sort of cuts off the means to give the IP another profit-aimed shot. Which unfortunately still is where any serious content development has to be coming from.

Since the WoW movie probably won't happen anyway, here's why it shouldn't

Can we have some proof on the "most WoW players don't know the story anyways" thing btw?

Considering it's lineage and the fact that for a lot of people it was their first MMO (at which point you still read quests), that doesn't really fly with me. Arguably the return of Kael and what he's up to passes a lot of people by, but the general story should be quite clear to everyone who even makes it to 70. Does anyone really not know who Arthas is?

There's details, sure, but that only serves as a means to make the world more attractive.

Aww look at the little troll. "Mediocre storyline" and everything..

Maybe if you had read the post and, you know, had been old enough to have read about the LotR movies when they were in the making, you'd notice certain similarities. Aside from all the worries the fans had upfront, what other property has such a pulling power on people outside it's core demographic?

Hint: it's not D&D but the author had to make his "it'll be shitty" point.

WoW has a metric shitload of lore and enough interesting characters to give me a little faith in the character development in any future movie. Not to mention that Blizzard are renowned for their cinematics and never show anything until they're confident in it anyways.

Add to that that they have proven they can shift between genres quite successfully and top it off with bringing their own audience and there's really no reason why this wouldn't work.

You honestly do not, at any point, think translation may be the issue here? Even though the so-called anti-plugin software has written Warden all over it? Wow O_o

Anti-Aliased: WAR, huh, what is it good for?

I'm very sceptical about gear and spec meaning there's integration btw.

I see your point, but like I said I perceive quite a difference in PvE/PvP rewards and I have several raiders doing quite well in BGs elsewhere. WAR of course has no arenas and we haven't really seen the PvE endgame yet, so let's wait for that until we judge.

Besides that, WAR specs really aren't as.. specialist as those in say, WoW. I don't want to call them dumbed down, but I haven't seen individual specs outshine others yet. This isn't just a pro, it also makes you more "just another number", especially with the very casual nature of groups up to this point.

The focus on solely levelling through PvP is.. more intense than elsewhere, but XP through PvP isn't new and if you're going to just level through PvP on the current servers.. well you'll be doing scenarios or PvE in PvP zones.

The ongoing campaign isn't in effect yet, in fact, there's only one city for each side in the game as of now, so the meaningfulness of this is still very much undecided. Nice idea though, but not new.

Unlockable items isn't new. As I've stated elsewhere before, I in fact liked other implementations better.

Jumping from PvE to PvP is.. new? Are you serious? You relog in other games? Or do you mean the accessability through the interface, which I in fact already mentioned?

And no, they are not compatible as such. They're two seperate tracks. Sure you can do both, but you'd still have to go back in one after progressing in another if you want in on both (and I can't shake the feeling the PvP rewards are vastly superior to the PQ rewards, though this may be due to imbalance in my levels there, again proving my point).

This is of course somewhat inevitable in the current setup, but I think it could have been smoothed down a bit, for instance by making the chapter areas a bit bigger. Some seriously are a town and 3 PQs, why not make the whole zone work under the same banner?

Recommending MMOs to friends

Sep 29th 2008 4:44PM (Massively)
I did recommend some MMOs to new genre players back in the day and that worked out quite well. If you, as a gamer, haven't at least sniffed an MMO by now there's likely some form of made up mind involved though, so I'm not sure if I'd do it outside of the group of people I know who like to try new things out on their own as well.

There's too many preconceived ideas and comparisons involved now, same reason why recommending a new MMO to someone still actively playing another atm doesn't work really.
