This will sound a little crazy but it was Phantasy Star Online, this game was really close to a MMO as I can think of back in the day. The real game that pull me in was City of Heroes.
So the future of games will be to be nickle and dine the players? Nothing is ever FREE and F2P is not even close to it, I think I spent more in F2P than P2P.
F2P model is like watching network TV, you can watch it for free but if you want to watch it without the commercials you'll have to pay (at least for most). I would not call this exploitative.
