EVE Spotlight: An interview with CCP Zulu

Apr 15th 2011 2:01PM (Massively)
"It's almost an unwritten rule of game development that someone from quality assurance should never be promoted into a game design role." - this is almost entirely untrue. Many people will tell you that the best way to get into the industry is to start in QA and work your way up from there. I myself can attest to this, though I went from QA to Engineering.

Faction armor is about choice in Rise of the Godslayer

Mar 27th 2010 12:45PM (Massively)
The factions aren't for PvP.

The Dungeons are viewed as Common threats to all factions, and each dungeon will have the potential to drop gear for each faction.

The factions only separate characters in their look and play experience, they do not prevent players from playing together.

Specifically yes, Direct3D but the Dreamworld Engine also uses DirectInput, and DirectSound. So in general, the term DirectX is a broader way to explain what I'm talking about.

Yes, OpenGL 4's spec is improving but that doesn't change that to port the engine over would require a large investment in time and money, and would set the game back by a good amount of time.

Blizzard developed World of Warcraft's engine to support both DirectX 9 and OpenGL 2.0. The game even had a linux client at one point in beta, but that was scratched.

Funcom's Dreamworld Engine does not support OpenGL at any level, and would require a good amount of time and effort to bring any game running it to another rendering engine. The reason they announce an Xbox version as well is due to that console also supporting DirectX. If you take a look at the games that do support mac (Warhammer, Fallen Earth) you can see that both of them were ported to mac, their engines don't officially support OpenGL, so they use a compatibility layer called WINE. This may work well for some engines, but an engine like Dreamworld supports some of the most advanced features of DirectX that aren't exactly possible under OpenGL.

Mac, while gaining popularity, is still not financially ideal for game development. With Steam making it's way there, hopefully that will change in the future.

GDC10: A look into Age of Conan's Rise of the Godslayer expansion, part 3

I've been playing for far too long to even entertain the idea of a Free 2 Play model. I really hope they don't do that, or if they do severely limit the amount of armor and weapons that can be purchased. You have to work so hard for PvP levels, to get PvP gear.. it would be such a shame to be able to purchase that with money.

I'm stuck in my old ways of not liking Free 2 Play, I'm sure it could do some great things for the game. I just don't like the idea.

Jeez man, so much hate. Can't you let those of us who enjoy the game enjoy some new information?

I'm happy about the expansion and the new content, and the Shrines of Bori next patch. I wish people would focus on what they're doing right, as they seem to be doing a lot right these days.

Age of Conan: Welcome to Kara Korum

Most people would suggest Wiccana for those who aren't ready to deal with a decent amount of ganking. If you can deal with it and even want to kill some people Cimmeria is good, the RP-PvP tag turns a lot of people off but the role playing isn't super heavy and it's got a lot of nice people. Tyranny on the other hand is like the evil stepchild by most accounts, but some people enjoy it there.

I was aiming at you because the game wasn't originally designed for keeps. Mythic made a late change to the game, the engine couldn't support it, and the aspects of the actual sieges weren't fleshed out well.

If the game had launched without the changes to those aspects of gameplay, who knows what might have happened. Anywho, I was just a little frustrated sorry for the assault.

Warhammer Online wasn't meant to have keeps originally. The entire BETA was shut down for a few months so they could completely revamp open field RvR because people wanted it to be more like DAOC. Please, if you're going to spew misinformation at least warn people you don't know what your talking about.

On the other hand, I've happily been playing Age of Conan since I stopped playing Warhammer Online. Missed the bad it seems, but I hear about some horrible things every now and then. All in all it seems that Funcom has got a bit better at listening to player concerns and doing something about it. The recent removal of stamina pots from casters, while controversial, has definitely helped make melee pvp feel a bit more balanced.
