I'd like to see them offer a bonus incentive to anyone who already has a EU-1 account for purchasing the NA-1 account... like half off for a month or something. Not that we need more people on NA-1 or anything, but it might be interesting.
Very much like the stage sets that look real when you see it from a distance, but once you get close you bump up against it. I was really disappointed that they didn't do something with folks who try to fly into planets beyond bumping against an object... how hard would it have been to start to create a situation where shields start going down, the ship shakes, warnings go off to not try to land a spaceship etc etc. The same goes for running into asteroids; you simply bump into them. This was one of the game breakers imo.
This is how Cryptic rewards the people who pre-ordered or purchased at release... by making them pay twice as much for the same amount of time as those who wait until the first month is almost up (and the game loses 80% of its installbase, because the game is boring past 20 hours investment).
They're obviously only interested in selling copies of the game and not in retaining any subscriber base. I'd imagine, considering the development time, that they'll just be happy with the profits from the initial sales and are happy to not have to support and expand the game for a large audience. After all, the only people that will be left after this debacle will be the truly hardcore Trek fans (and primarily the 'new' fans, drawn in by the latest movie), and those folks will eat up anything if you put a trek communicator in it and have sounds from the original series.
Beta is a valuable and important part of the launch of a game. Aside from the obvious stress testing it brings, there are also often times various logging services running on the servers, as well as the more broad opportunity to submit bugs that may have been missed through alpha. Also, as someone who's played in many MANY betas (and a few Alphas to beta to launch), I can say that I have seen many 'miracle patches' right before launch that either resolved the majority of game deficiencies or crippled a product that seemed ready to go. Some games change drastically in open beta, and you really get an opportunity to see how they polish, and often times in the polishing, the shiniest part is revealed.
Check the 'state of the realm' to see that they've clustered their servers, and its not unusual for the one populated world to have close to or over 3000 people. If you like PvP, however, you'll be competing with around 50 people at most unless there's no other available servers (yes, their servers still crash after all these years).
My guild has a few guys who've gone back to Mordred to try and recapture some of the old magic. Its great fun making fun of them for playing such an old and busted game.
