DC Universe Online braces for the Battle for Earth

Mar 2nd 2012 7:57AM (Massively)
@Furdinand Actually, it kind of is. I don't understand why guys like you look down at me for expecting a product that I have been paying for since launch (and was in the beta before that) have the basics working correctly. A company (who specializes in MMO's) that can't get the little things fixed (in OVER A YEAR'S time) SHOULD get criticized. Instead of being a sheep/fanboy, you should support me if you actually like the gameplay. If they can't fix the little things, do you actually have faith in them?

(I should point out that I'm on PS3 primarily. I know PC doesn't have that issue.)

DC Universe Online braces for the Battle for Earth

While I love what this game COULD be, there are so many issues that should've been fixed in beta that are still a part of everyday playtime, it's hard to be excited about this.

I mean, 10 game updates, this will be 3 DLC packs, and various patches, and we still can't customize our chat colors without them defaulting on every log-in. C'mon, SOE... that's pretty bush league for an MMO company.

EverQuest Online Adventures sunsetting March 29th

Personally I'd love to see this go the way of EQMac instead. I'd come back if they dropped the monthly charge and just left the server up. Loved this game back when, just got tired of paying for next to no updates.

If not... EQOA, you will be missed by many.

The Daily Grind: Do you take time off work to play games?

Feb 23rd 2012 1:33PM (Massively)
I've done this once, and I did it with a goal. I was playing Final Fantasy XI, and it was well before the Valor options were added to make leveling quicker and easier.

I called off sick because my Beastmaster was level 69, and those I'd been BST-partying with had gotten to 71. It took me all day, from 8PM to 6PM, to solo my two levels in Caedarva Mire. Then I went and got my BST specific armor from the auction house. Wasn't the best gear for the job, but it looked cool as hell to run around in!!

Guild Wars 2 console version confirmed

Feb 15th 2012 1:35PM (Massively)
First, anyone saying MMO's don't work on consoles or are "dumbed-down" are either just ill-informed or just ignorant. All consoles these days allow for USB keyboards, and what exactly does a mouse do that a controller cannot? I probably have more buttons than you do. (FFXI is the exact same game on PS2/Xbox 360 is it is on PC, and you cannot tell the difference between one platform or another. DCUO is the same game on PS3 as PC.)

On the other hand, I've been promised so many MMO's coming to console that never made it, I'll believe it when I see it. That being said, GW2 is one of the bigger MMO releases this year. I would play this in a heartbeat if it ever releases, and I'll do it on my comfy-ass couch with my keyboard in my lap and a controller in my hand. Hopeful for cross-platform play on this one...

The Daily Grind: Are you currently on hiatus from MMOs?

Feb 3rd 2012 8:33AM (Massively)
I am on hiatus, but not by choice. See, I'm a rare breed in the MMO world: a console gamer. Many will say that an MMO can't be done correctly on consoles. As a former player of EQOA and Final Fantasy XI for many years, I respectfully disagree.

The issue now is the lack of promised console MMO's. Yes, I've played DCUO and while it COULD be a good game, there are too many things wrong with it, even with the F2P option. We never got Age of Conan, LOTRO, DDO, or Champions Online like we were told. So far, all I see are shooter MMO's like Dust 541 on the horizon. (I'm withholding judgement on FF14 on PS3, as I'm thinking by the time it releases, it'll be too little too late.)

Here's to hoping I can get back in... someday.

DC Universe Online's upcoming game update is all about easier grouping

Jan 31st 2012 9:18AM (Massively)
As a DCUO player since beta, I think this update is horrible. Nothing new, just the same rehashed stuff, only with easy mode.

What the hell is going on with MMO's these days? No one wants to grind, no one wants to wait for a good group, no one wants to actually make friends and party up. It all seems to be about getting to level cap in a week or less, getting top tier gear ASAP super easily, and then complaining the game doesn't have enough content. Updates like this only prove that.

How is something EPIC or RARE when everyone has it in under a month?

The Daily Grind: When do you alt?

Jan 31st 2012 9:11AM (Massively)
Preferably, never...

Say what you will about Final Fantasy XI or XIV, but the one thing they both do right is allowing your character to switch jobs. I don't mind leveling new jobs from scratch, but most MMO's make you do all the dumb shit over again, like all the exploration, transportation options, notoriety, etc. Screw that. I tried to level an alt on DCUO, but I just can't get excited about repeating all that crap.

I love that I had one character that everyone knew, but today I can level my Black Mage in party, but tomorrow I can go solo on my Puppetmaster...

It's official: EverQuest goes free-to-play

Jan 30th 2012 7:09PM (Massively)
I know this will probably not happen, but I wonder if the PS2 game Everquest Online Adventures will follow this lead, or if they will just shut that game down.

Only reason I've never gone back to EQOA was the $14.99/month charge, simply because as this point, I doubt it's worth it. But for freemium, I'd pull out my old PS2's and get questing all over!!

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning locks out questline via online pass [update: 38 Studios and EA respond]

Jan 27th 2012 2:32PM (Joystiq)
This trend of having "online passes" for single-player games is bullshit. In fact, it's pretty much bullshit across the board.
Let's see: in this generation alone, we've gone from free maps to support a game to $15.00 map packs that are useless months later when the next annual edition comes out. We have a compnay that charges extra for online play, yet stalls out on giving any real benefits. (Like, why do only the PC players get the Left4Dead2 content for free, MS? Why is there still no next-gen MMO on your console, MS?) We have companies that regularly put out games that need multiple patches, and in some cases take MONTHS for these patches to be approved and applied. And on top of this, we have limited content passes keeping us from buying used copies of SINGLE PLAYER GAMES. Oh, and they just had to raise the prices for games this generation too.

I hate to say it, but I'm thinking of finding a new hobby. I agree about supporting the devs, but in the big scheme of things, what are any of the game companies doing for us as consumers in the long run?
