Are new MMOs afraid to take risks?

Sep 1st 2009 5:08PM (Massively)
There has been a lack of unique ideas in MMOs for the past 10 years or so. While some of this is a result of people trying to create the next "WoW killer", I also think it's because of a proven formula. An MMO generally has a very long development cycle, with often more content than any other genre. It's much easier to push out the next Madden with a couple unique twists that either pass or fail, because it's mostly copy/paste. A company is taking a larger risk by pouring half a decade or often more into a single game. Larger companies are going to have to take the risks necessary to push the formula for a good MMO.

By under the impressing, I mean I am under people that have the ability to impress. Damn multitasking.

I was under the impressing that an open beta was meant to get as many people in the game as possible to test server capacity and latency. Apparently this isn't the goal of their open beta. It seems more along the lines of; make money while we can beta.

Massively Speaking Episode 65: NDA drop edition

I feel like developers have been sacrificing game-play to make room for shiny, bloom, as realistic as possible graphics. This has lead to a flux of good looking, terrible games. I don't think the graphics are bad by any stretch in Fallen Earth, but it's apparent that their focus is on game-play and I think they nailed it.

I've had the same experience with Fallen Earth. I was in the alpha, and the performance was terrible, but I could see a lot of exciting potential. I really enjoyed the crafting, but the combat felt broken. I quit playing, for a while, but got back into it a couple weeks ago. Wow! This game is going to be great. The atmosphere, and game-play are amazing. It feels a lot like old SWG meets Hellgate: London, but combines a lot of unique elements to leveling, gathering, crafting, and questing that make it something completely new.

I came back hoping they had heard our pleas, and gave us an extension. That does not appear to be the case. Congratulations to those whom are selected.

Why is this still a quick link on the page, but the deadline for submissions has passed? I just saw this today, and would have loved to give it a shot. I was a little preoccupied with the birth of my son last week so I was unable to visit the site everyday. I've been wanting to get into game review blogging for some time now. Shucks!

The Daily Grind: Should you be able to choose your class after rolling a toon?

Jul 22nd 2009 11:12AM (Massively)
Character classes are a great way for a developer to hide content, increase replayability, and ultimately get your monthly subscription for longer.

If all MMOs were skill based people would simply choose the skills they want, and create their perfect all inclusive character the first time. You throw fun and unique abilities like stealth, healing, and stat buffs into several different characters and the player is forced to play several different characters.

Spreading content out in this way is the best way to keep hardcore players busy for a long time and paying the monthly subscription.

Did you change the images for the avatar creation section? I could have swore this post had even worse looking avatars the first time I saw it.
