EQ2 was pushing the boundarys selling all those fluff items at the shop, (and the xp potions) but WoW completely broke down all the barriers when they introduced that damn horse for sale. They made a crap load of money and now we can probably expect this to become the norm in most every major mmo.
Next they will be selling armor sets, crafting patterns and content like special dungeons you can unlock and get superior xp and items from on top of the subscription price.
The flood gates have been opened and there’s no closing them now.
Well, they’ve been talking about doing Planet Side 2 for a while now so I think they will announce the sequel or it’ll be some lame in-game event that disappoints everyone.
Or both!
But the other thing that could happen is that they announce the game will now be FTP with micro-transactions. That’ll bring new people to the game and SOE will monitor how much money it generates and then use that data in deciding what sort of payment plan Planet Side 2 will use.
The game is so big that keeping it from leaking is impossible now. I think that in this case it would be better to not even have an NDA. The people who want to know about the expansion are going to find out and there’s too much of a demand out there to waste the resources it would take to try and suppress the leaks. For companies creating a new game for market it might be good to have an NDA for marketing reasons, but WOW has already established itself as a highly successful product and people are going to buy the expansion regardless.
The people who don’t want things spoiled don’t have to go look at the leaks. The people who don’t care will find them. Just remove the NDA and make the development process more transparent to the fans who are interested in it. Leaks like the ones so far from the Alpha have only served to hype the expansion rather than hurt it.
If it’s a NWN mmo I’m gunna be pissed. They had a huge IP like Star Trek and they blew it. I don’t have faith in them to properly develop and fund a D&D mmo. Neverwinter Nights deserves to be developed by a company that’s not going to shit out a poorly designed game with no content and a bad game engine.
While they have made improvements to CO and developer/community communication has improved dramatically, I just don’t think they are capable of doing the franchise justice. I’d love to be proved wrong though.
While I don’t give a crap about the PS3 or Free Realms this is big news. If this makes Sony good money you can bet that we’ll see other mmo’s ported over to the console world. Storage will still be an issue as well as interfacing with a controller, (PS3 can use a keyboard/mouse while the 360 cant.)
Since Sony owns a bunch of mmo’s porting them over wont be difficult from a legal standpoint, but with the 360 there would probably be all kinds of issues since Microsoft doesn’t have any mmo’s in it’s stable.
The next generation of game consoles may very well be designed with mmo’s in mind and vice-versa, especially considering how successful micro-transactions and DLC have been on both Xbox Live and in mmos.
Whoa, you need to pay to play the game after you buy it? I thought they were going with a Guild Wars type subscription model where you just buy the game and then play as you want, but with the addition of a micro-transaction shop for added revenue.
How disappointing. Unless the game ends up being absolutely amazing I don’t see myself buying it now.
