Ask Massively: Bree made a huge mistake edition

Mar 3rd 2011 7:59PM (Massively)
The MMO model hasn't changed significantly since it was first introduced. It has been tweaked to keep up to date with the times with each new patch or generation of titles that comes out. Is it becoming an archaic Frankenstein or is it so damn solid that it is paving the way for the future of gaming?

Massively exclusive: A chat with DCUO's Chris Cao, part two

I'm thoroughly enjoying the game as it is one of the most polished SOE MMOs to launch. I also think the game does a magnificent job in keeping you in the magic circle from the get-go. I really love how the game adapts flawlessly to serious and calculating play style as well as goofy and lusory play style. If I get tired of figuring out the best combos and power managing, I can just go all out and button mash the hell out of it and still get the giggles.

Mark Hamill as the Joker was the best voice actor investment. In fact, the voice acting is wonderful in this game. I really enjoy that most of the quests will come with some voice acted commentary, be it form my mentor or anyone else. I do find it funny that Dwight Schultz is The Flash. Gotta keep telling myself that I'm not taking orders from Lt. Barclay :)

Although I'm still exploring the game and what it has to offer, I do some observations to voice. Albeit I'm only level 10, by the time I reached level 7 or 8 I was overwhelmed with quests in my journal, most of which I have no idea how they got there. It seems that I'm leveling much quicker than my quest completion rate. I was level 9 and I still had two level 6 quests to complete. One of those had me going to another city which launched a couple of more storylines, making my journal even fatter. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing yet. It's great that I never have to worry about not having anything to do or "grinding" but at the same token I feel that this might be overwhelming for some players and they might have a hard time maintaining quest continuity. Being a seasoned MMO player myself, I'm used to having 10 quests at once and having maybe one or two left over after I level up. Here, I level up within 3 quests and have 7 quests left over.

The cut scenes are magnificent. I love the kiosks that give you a brief blurb about the area you are in. I also understand how they add an extra edge to PvP. However, I think there should be a way to skip a cut scene that you've already seen. I have no problem being unable to exit a cut scene the first time I watch it, but often times I may activate the wrong kiosk, one that I've already gone through, and sure enough I have to sit through the cut scene again. Once is enough, please add a flag on the kiosks so that if you've triggered it once already, you can hold the mouse button down to skip it every time thereafter!

Lastly, without talking about topics that have been beaten to death already, I think a citywide or a help chat tab would be very useful and stop people from shouting all the time :)

Keep up the great work, I know this honeymoon period is an exciting and marvelous time. I look forward to spending some time with my Villain once I get my Hero to 30!

One Shots: Our top 10 of 2010

Geek correction: Those are TNG style Star Trek uniforms which were from the mid 80s/early 90s

The Daily Grind: What's the most difficult choice you've had to make in MMOs?

Dec 11th 2010 1:52PM (Massively)
When SOE began shutting down the less populated SWG servers, I was on Wanderhome. It sucked because I had to choose a server and most of the community went its separate ways. Some went to Starsider, others to Flurry, etc. It really sucked having to choose a server knowing that half of my friends and people I played with weren't going to be there. SO yeah, choosing a server was a difficult decision, and a big bummer.

The Daily Grind: What are your MMO regrets?

Dec 8th 2010 4:36PM (Massively)
I seem to be doomed when it comes to MMOs:

My first regret was purchasing Trials of Obi Wan right before the NGE announcement.

My second regret was sticking around till January with "hopes" that it would get better.

My third regret was purchasing Vanguard, only to discover that it barely ran smoothly on my then-decent computer.

My fourth regret is not only pre-ordering the STO collectors edition, but purchasing a lifetime subscription before release.

Seems like I make all the wrong decisions when it comes to MMOs. For now, I'm sticking to LotRO because it's free. Not much I can muck up there.

iPhone 3G, iOS 4, and you -- what's missing (spoiler: multitasking)

Ross, have you noticed any better performance on the 3G with iOS 4? Or does it still blow gaskets like good old 3.1?

Motorola Droid 2 fully exposed?

Jun 10th 2010 7:59PM (Engadget)
Most disappointing :( I would expect the Droid 2 to be a significant upgrade to the original Droid. Yet its specs are pretty much on par with the original Droid. This would have been my next phone if it had:

-1Ghz Snapdragon
-Front AND rear camera
-720p video recording
-HDMI out
