"If that name doesn't ring a bell, consider that the firm is behind the upcoming.... free-to-play martial arts MMO."
Then I was all :|
Another crappy generic Asian grinder MMO, and, to boot, it looks like a couple of the mobs in the game were lifted straight from the Iron Kingdoms setting.
On that note, someone get to work on an Iron Kingdoms/Warmachine MMO, stat!
Iconic, I'd say Neriak or Qeynos from EQ1, or Ironforge or Orgimmar from WoW, or Camelot or Tir na Nog (for some reason, not so much Jordheim) from DAoC.
For nostalgia purposes, though, I miss Cabilis and Rivervale and Omni-1 quite a bit. But the cities (more like towns) I miss most of all? Rithwic. Shoushi. Yaraq. Man do I miss Asheron's Call sometimes.
I don't think anything will beat WoW. WoW is a fluke, an aberration. A game can be successful without boasting WoW-like subscription numbers, and to expect a game to get those kinds of numbers is ridiculous. Time will eventually wear WoW down, but I don't think any single game will beat it.
I haven't played WoW in years and have no desire to play it again, and there are several other MMOs I like more, bu that's my viewpoint on the situation.
And Jack Emmert is the LAST person on earth who should be talking about what it takes to beat WoW. I don't know how he made City of Heroes, which is, IMO, a phenomenal game, and then made two wretched, miserable games like Champions and Star Trek Online. He has no right to talk about success, not when he's offering complete dreck like CO and STO.
I loved AC way back in the day, though I didn't play it much since I was pretty young and, well, nothing kept my attention for very long. I kinda regret that now. If I had to pick one older MMORPG to play forever and ever, it'd probably be AC.
Maybe someday I'll subscribe to it again and stick around for a while, though I imagine it might be difficult starting out as a brand new player in such an old game.
I'm pretty sure it's meant to be like an award for the most impressive game that seems like it has potential, since GamesCon seems to be largely focused on showcasing forthcoming games in development, at least from the footage I've seen. It's the same as a game at E3 getting a "Best in Show" award.
This is a shame, but I'm not surprised. The game was absolutely great, IMO, but a lot of people had issues with the patcher, there were some intense balance issues, and, most crippling, I heard reports of people actually being unable to buy game time; their order just would not be processed. The game literally could not make any money.
I really hoped they would've been able to fix the issues the game had before it was too late, but it looks pretty grim.
