Its unfortunate that so many people who I knew playing Guild Wars had the same complaints. I really wanted this subscription model to get popular and evolve into some sort of workable industry standard, but now developers are going more towards micro-transactions like this as opposed to a whole product to pay for once.
People have to feel like their game is evolving and going somewhere with some kinda of free patches and updates, otherwise most players will find it stale over time and move on to a more active developer.
Jumpgate Evolution - Because its about damn time for a nice arcade-ish space shooter SWTOR- Because I love Bioware's standards Blackstar- First one actually incorporating both ground and space mechanics without heavy instancing? (I can dream dammit!)
I can't say I was startrek fan, but I dont see what its going to bring to a sci-fi saturated mmo landscape. Maybe they're going to just ride movie hype, but it doesnt show anything new or promising to me at this point.
As much as I would love to be spending hours on end working on a character on my bigscreen, it would have to be cross platform. Most people brought up a good point that cross platform mmo's inevitably slow down the development process. That is simply too much to ask for most mmo companies. Only the major players could afford to take such a risk, but the idea of a console WoW does seem like it could bring in more casual players.
The subscription model is also something to be aware of. People using xbox are already paying for online play, you could not seriously ask the hardcore install base to add an additional fee on top of that. And PS3 remains largely free online, it would be a tough sell for both consoles.
I became very good friends with people met in WoW. After playing with them for a couple years, I have now flown out to the east coast twice to meet up with them. We now all plan annual get together and we dont even play MMOs together anymore, at least for now since we burned out.
