Yes the game is free to play. You can spend money to get an increase in credit/xp per battle and there are certain premium tanks but that is optional.
I have played since closed beta more than two years ago and in those two years I have spent perhaps 20 dollars at most and have several high tier tanks anyway.
I think Funcom is in for a world of hurt. Age of Conan had a huge IP that boosted them in terms of sales. The new game is a new IP and follows a game that did not impress gamers.
The game also has both a montly fee and a cash shop. Not sure why anyone would play this ?

All they are doing is some forum translations and calling it a european launch ;)

The game is quite a lot of fun but the world of warplanes alpha is horrible.
