Steam for Mac beta reveals possible Linux compatibility in the pipeline, penguins rejoice
Apr 23rd 2010 4:55PM (Engadget)Linux and OSX have WAY more in common then either have in common with Windows (they have very similar kernels and, in fact, OSX can run many of the same apps as Linux natively though the reverse is not true).
I would love to see a more viable Linux community even though I almost never use Linux because it represents a shift away from Windows being required for gaming (something that benefits anyone who doesn't enjoy paying 300 dollars for Windows 7 ultimate just to play games).
A lot of windows games can already be played on Mac/Linux via Wine, but removing that layer of hurt will go a LONG way to making dual booting to windows no longer a requirement for anyone who wants to play games. Gaming is really the last thing that is functionally windows only, pretty much every other function office, academic or professional can be done without Microsoft by now, lets finish the loop.
Shifting Perspectives: Moonkin, a history, Page 2
Apr 16th 2010 4:02PM (WoW)I loved being a resto/balance hybrid back in the day. I raided balance but did so as 31 resto 20 balance (to get the 100% crit bonus) and it was awesome. AV, raids in MC and BWL, whatever, it was great. The one downside was the dedicated druid gear sucked, but I just made up for it with great offspec stuff from MC and BWL (nef's tear being the highlight, I used that through most of TBC even).
Sure when that red cloth robe dropped in MC some cloth casters complained that I rolled, but I'd been saving all my points by completely ignoring tier gear so it was mine for the taking (I was also early on in college at the time so I had the free time for a 95%+ raid attendance rate).
Some fights I'd just DPS, sometimes I would heal in a certain phase and then go back to doing damage, sometimes I'd use decursive (back when it actually worked, the good old days) and I loved it.
It was also, I would say, the high point for PVP viability. Melee DPS wasn't out of control yet, HP levels were reasonable and balance druids had a lot of healing in their spec (and there weren't many ways out of roots). I won almost all fights except for a sword specced warrior who was the best on the horde side, we'd seek each other out all the time (since you actually fought people from your server back then) and have epic battles that I was about 50/50 on depending on how often that uber sword double attack proced.
I'll agree that for raiding damage was much better in TBC (to take a nose dive in wrath so badly that I switched to a tanking DK for my main) but at the expense of losing the cool gear and ability to do what we want.
I LOVED wearing all the offset gear and looking distinct among all the people who wore the tier stuff and looked identical. I wish that could come back, I don't even mind the restrictions as much as I mind the look (though I do mind both). Why not just make it an aspect type thing that gives you penalties to healing (without closing all spells off) and doesn't make you look retarded unless you want to? Druids in EQ had forms like wolf, tree and others but it never FORCED you into those forms and there were other ways to get the benefits without looking stupid (IE you could get increased run speed through the spell speed of wolf or turning into a wolf).
If tree can die (or be a triggered form that only is used occasionally) why not moonkin? Make it a cooldown like metamorphasis for locks and all will be greatly improved.
Mustang 5.0 wins first comparo against Camaro SS, Challenger SRT8
Apr 5th 2010 2:11PM (Autoblog)For 20-30k the Camaro is a hell of a car with no real competition, that you need to add over 10k to the price to beat it is saying a lot.
Once you get up into that mid40k-50k range why are you looking at a souped up midrange car anyway? I mean for around 48k you can get a Corvette which, even in the base model, blows away all three mid range muscle cars.
If you can make a 30k car with awesome performance like the Camaro more power to you, but a Mustang or Challenger that costs about as much as a Corvette? No thanks.
iPad pre-order is go -- will you buy one?
Mar 12th 2010 12:39PM (Engadget)I mean you can bash products because they don't have this or that option checked off on your little spec list, but very few people really do that. I liked that the ipod and then the iphone just worked well and easily, I didn't go for the archros media player because it had a slightly bigger hard drive or 10 more pixils on its screen.
What matters is not nerdy little spec sheet things, what matters is how the whole device comes together. Like the iphone, the ipad looks great by that rubric for a whole lot of people. I'm going to use one and sell my logitech 1100. For a sitting on the couch companion device and something to take on the plane for media this seems great to me.
I mean if you're broke and can only have one device this probably isn't the one but man, if you're using a 400 dollar portable machine as your primary you have my pity.
Quick Spin: 2011 Chevrolet Volt charges toward production
Feb 16th 2010 4:31PM (Autoblog)If I could actually get one for 32k give or take (after the tax break) that would be a great deal to me. I couldn't be happier with my Equinox and G6 (the last two cars I've purchased, both GM) and really am looking forward to this one.
Review: 2010 Kia Forte Koup SX a beauty queen that can't hide its roots
Feb 16th 2010 4:19PM (Autoblog)A Malibu or Fusion is under 20k with incentives and under 19k if you have any negotiating skills at all which is only about 1500 more then this Kia.
The Malibu gets 33 MPG Highway (2 more) while having the same HP, a better interior, better build quality and has won or been in the top 3 for car of the year since 2008. The Fusion gets 34 MPG highway (3 more) with 175 HP and again has much better interior, Sync and has also been in the top 3 for car of the year for several years now.
I guess if you're absolutely married to the idea of a compact car, even if mid size cars are better, even on fuel economy, these days (mainly due to standard 6 speed automatics that have become the new norm) this kia makes sense...but really, value for the money, its just not there.
Report: Microsoft turned down US Army's order of Xbox 360 systems
Feb 11th 2010 1:44PM (Joystiq)I mean Sony sold thousands of PS3s to the airforce with no issues.
Also did Microsoft really say that they were worried about being seen as the gamerboy FPS machine by parents? Is there anyone in the world who doesn't look at the Xbox brand and think "oh thats the gamerboy FPS heavy system" by now?
It has less to do with the army and more to do with pretty much every big hit on the Xbox being a FPS game (Halo1-4, Gears 1-2, Modern Warfare 1-2, Call of Duty etc).
Seriously just because you have like 2 family games, both called Viva Pinata, does not make the 360 anything but the gamerboy system. Bust out games like ratchet and clank, Little Big Planet, Super Mario Bros, Wii Play etc and maybe that will change, but I doubt that will happen.
Whats the big release this year? Oh yah, Halo Reach, another gamerboy FPS staring Marines from Space, surprise!
Editorial: What could Apple's new iPad mean for MMOs?
Jan 29th 2010 12:42PM (Massively)As far as I can tell netbooks are entirely worthless. They run normal OSes, have very limited capabilities, are painfully slow (thanks to the aforementioned normal OS, Windows is such a resource hog compared to a mobile OS even limited programs have trouble running on the 1.6 GHZ atom with all the overhead) and just seem...well useless.
Netbooks do fill a niche. They are for people who can't afford a decent laptop for whatever reason. They're the Kia Rio of the computing world.
They are indeed cheap, but I would say that a macbook is almost certainly a better value since never in a million years could a netbook by ones only computer unless they didn't need it for any kind of work or fullscreen video or gaming or...anything.
I mean on a decent laptop with a graphics card Dalaran is 25-30 FPS, good luck heading there with your 1.6 atom processor and intel GMA graphics.
They ipad on the other hand is a great second computer. For high end gaming you have your primary, which can be a desktop thanks to the ipad (giving you much more performance boom for your buck) and then you have this for looking stuff up on the couch, running silly limited games on the go and all the rest of the millions of casual things people do on computers.
I just want something I can put on the table, pick up and then use within seconds to browse the web or run a casual game or take notes on in a meeting/class.
If you have a real car, say a Cadillac or something (a well apportioned primary computer) why in the world do you need a Kia Rio as a second car? That just seems inferior, redundant and silly. I look at the ipad as something like having a nice car, and then getting a motorcycle for limited fun tasks with a quick ramp up time. You're not going to go to the grocery store with it, but its easy to park at work, easy to maneuver and fun.
What effect does the Dungeon Finder have on smaller servers?
Jan 20th 2010 2:08PM (WoW)The big thing that keeps people stuck on servers they don't like is the group of people they know. That is why saying "just transfer to a dif one" doesn't work unless you can talk a dozen people into going with which is nearly impossible. Instead, just turning two low pop servers into one medium-high server couldn't be easier.
Another solution is allowing cross server grouping for both dungeons AND raids. Maybe you would still use LFR instead of being able to just pop in like dungeons (since raids are harder) but if you had a 10 server LFR channel it would be far easier to form up.
This would combine well with a cross server chat system, which is already implemented in arenas and dungeon groups. I mean all the raids are instanced anyway, and they can get people from dif servers into the same instance in dungeons so....
Imagine a world where anyone who plays wow can group with anyone else who plays wow to do any content they want without regards to server. How great that would be. I mean who hasn't had the experience of meeting a friend in real life only to find they're on a different server, often in a different battlegroup.
So the best solution in the short term is small server consolidation, the long term best solution is cross server chat and grouping capability beyond the dungeon finder. It's just such a boon being able to group with anyone you want who plays the game and would encourage more subs by expanding the friend web that keeps people in the game.
Raid/PuG habits should be kept separate
Jan 18th 2010 7:56PM (WoW)You could just let them leech, but its better to just boot them as soon as the timer is up and make them start over again. If they're a fail DPS and have a 15 minute cooldown (or longer depending on the server) maybe they'll use the time to farm up some money to buy one of the dozens of craftable pieces to contribute or maybe to learn their class.
As a DK tank in ICC gear I can more or less solo anything below the new 232 ICC stuff but only somewhat slowly. And just because I can shouldn't mean I have to. I didn't spend hours gearing so that fail DPS can get carried, if they want to finish the instance and get the bonus badges they have to contribute.
Maybe if it happens to them a few times they'll get angry and quit wow or start a new lv 1 alt, thats what I call the best possible result.
