Joyswag: Suit up for Monday Night Combat [update: giveaway closed]

Aug 11th 2010 10:44AM (Joystiq)
I once ordered a BLT at a restaurant, but there was a tomato shortage due to a salmonella outbreak. As such, my waiter informed me I could order something else or get extra bacon in place of the missing tomatoes. Best bacon-lettuce sandwich ever.

Win a lifetime of LotRO from Massively

Dec 23rd 2009 10:33AM (Massively)
I have a friend studying abroad next semester and she loves LOTR. A lifetime sub for me would mean that I could pay for her sub instead of mine and we'd have one more way to stay in touch.

Happy Yule Festival everyone!

The Daily Grind: What unloved game do you adore?

Oct 4th 2009 9:32AM (Massively)
I totally agree. I only managed to play TR for a couple months before it got shut down, but it was still probably the most fun I've ever had playing an MMO. Granted after a certain point there just wasn't anything left to do and a lot of the weapons were pointless at times, but the core gameplay was just so much more engaging despite the fact that it was actually much simpler than the typical MMO.

But you're absolutely right. Trying to hold a CP either with friends or just a random group of strangers that happened to be around when the Bane decided that they wanted a base back and they wanted it right this second was incredibly fun. It really gave you a sense that the game world was alive, especially when you weren't logged in, and that there really was a war going on. There's nothing quite like logging on in the morning, only to see that the Bane have retaken all the bases and then putting together a strike team to go retake them. I think the fact that all the friendly NPCs despawned (including quest givers, shops, healers, etc) when a base was lost really gave players an incentive to group up and retake the it.

After playing TR, I was always bothered by the keep sieges in Warhammer Online. They're supposed to be these big strategic points that two armies are fighting over, but their garrison consists of a handful of guys and a commander. And you only ever have to worry about defending against other players because it's not like the armies of Chaos or Order would ever mobilize a squad or two of soldiers to assist you. Maybe TR's dynamic bases just spoiled me.

CCP Games reveals new EVE Online console MMO: DUST 514

Aug 18th 2009 10:20AM (Massively)
It's a brilliant play on CCP's part though. Rather than trying to snatch up more MMO gamers, they're branching out to a new audience, both platform and genre-wise. What will really determine the success of Dust 514 is whether the impact Dust has on EVE will be significant enough for EVE players to care. However before that can happen Dust needs to cultivate a large enough following on its own, meaning the game needs to bring something to the table that will draw gamers away from playing Call of Duty 9: Modern Warfare 5 or Halo 8.

Since Valve won't go ahead and make TF2 a full-blown MMO already, might as well play the next best thing!
