iriver Spinn caught on video, kills without words

Aug 4th 2008 5:49AM (Engadget)
I was really looking forward to this player. But, why would I buy this if I already have a Clix2? The only reason I'd upgrade is for more storage space, so if its true they no longer have an SD card slot then I certainly will not be picking on up. :(

iriver's touchscreen Spinn gets priced for pre-order

If you look at image 2 in the gallery you'll see a panel that looks very much like a SD card slot. If it is then there really is very little to worry about when it comes to storage.

Fan-made Vanguard trailer has community talking excitedly

Jun 17th 2008 6:20PM (Massively)
I bought the game for £8 in Gamestation (UK) and I was told that Game was selling it for £5 but they have not had any copies in for a while (at least where I live).

So far I'm liking it. After the claustrophobic feel of AoC it seems really free form, you can explore anywhere you want. Maybe that's what the trailer is getting at.

The Daily Grind: How will Ambulation change EVE Online?

I played Eve a year or so back and also when it first launched, however I just felt it was lacking in character. I'll certainly be giving it another look when this expansion sites.

Player vs. Everything: Putting raiding on your resume

May 19th 2008 7:31AM (Massively)
Being an MMO player and someone who looks through CV's once in a while, I can say I'd be in two minds about hiring a Raid Guild member. I'd be much more inclined to look favourably on a CV with references to Social/RP guild activities.

I agree that being in a Raid guild 'should' help with skills employers are looking for. However even in the gaming community Raid guilds have a reputation for being the home of obsessive players. Although well organised, they are organised for the soul purpose of doing repetitive tasks over and over again for little reward, often to the detriment of other social activities... wait... that's perfect for most jobs! Its definitely time for business to look to Raid guilds.

Seriously though, I'd hope in ten years 'Raid Guilds' don't even exist in the same way they do at the moment. I'd hope that game design has moved on enough that being in a Guild doesn't emulate most peoples working lives. It is, after all, a social hobby (notice how I didn't use the G word there) and not a second job.

AoC beta: a tale of two clients

May 7th 2008 6:50AM (Massively)
Closed Beta is MUCH better than Open, as long as you have a good system to play it on. The massive loading times and 2fps issues are bugs and not how it should, or does, play on a good system. Simple facts, not fan boy delusions.

Safe to say, Funcom still has work to do on the client. It still
has bugs that hurt performance and a few fairly major crashing issues. It's also fair to say if you expect to run it on full settings (like you do in WoW) and don't have a spanky brand new system you are going to be disappointed.

For me the game runs quite well at nearly full settings (25-30+ fps, not brilliant but very playable). Loading times cant be called fast, but are tolerable (10-30secs for a new zone loading). The worst issue for me is the client hanging once in a while when new textures are loaded in. It maybe for only a second or two, but its something they need to fix before launch and that's exactly what they are doing!

Simply put... Its not finished, they are still patching and yes it really is still beta, no matter how open to the general public it may be. I'm sure Launcn will be painful, but I believe it will all come good in the end.

Please remember that the vocal minority make up the vast majority of posts on any forum and although I'm sure lots of people are having problems (including me), its not all doom and gloom for AoC.

MMOGology: Roleplaying is dead

Nov 19th 2007 6:41PM (Massively)
Nice article Marc.

I never played text based games (unless you count pen and paper), my first real experience of 'good', make that 'fun' RPing was in AO (Anarchy Online).

The game didn't have much content when it first launched, so there wasn't all that much to do except role playing (or wait for the next bug fix). Me and a few friends started a RP guild called the Bronto Liberation Army. We had a theme which always helps role playing and we talked in character most of the time, stayed in character even when others around us tried to talk about RL. It always shocked me how often people just didn't get we were role playing.

I sometimes find that role players can take the whole role play thing way to seriously. Our philosophy was always to have a laugh while RPing, it became a challenge to create and play the most stupid or amusing characters, be it prudish Bureaucrats, moronic Atrox's or womanising Adventurers. I believe some RPers suffer from a distinct lack of humour, which has created a somewhat negative impression of role playing with many on-line gamers. Laughter is a great ice breaker for those non-RP people in my opinion.

I don't think I've laughed so much in any other game and I've certainly never had so much fun in a MMO since, probably due to the fact I've never managed to RP my characters to the same depth, with such nice amusing people.
