The Virtual Whirl: A crisis of confidence

Jun 20th 2010 3:37PM (Massively)
Incredibly well written prose. I've got nothing to add, but I find myself wondering what other virtual environments I may have encountered you before.

LL, I hope you're listening.

Fahy vs Linden Lab: No case to answer?

Apr 14th 2010 4:51PM (Massively)
Heh, why does these nuts always come from around Philadelphia? It gives us all a bad name. In a related note, I actually know the judge in this case through a friend... small world.

Linden Lab to crack down on events listing spam. Again

Jan 26th 2010 2:06PM (Massively)
Instead, perhaps it is time for Linden Lab to eliminate the events listings and profiles altogether. Allow users to specify a profile URL, a preferred event URL, a shopping URL... and leverage the power of the web instead of trying to reproduce that functionality using a kludgey viewer interface widgets.

I'd much rather just have my blog/site, Facebook, or SLProfiles page appear than my SL profile anyway, and I think most would agree given the extreme limitations of the SL profiles. The same applies to the limitations of the events listing.

That's not the Second Life economy!

Jan 22nd 2010 11:51AM (Massively)
I don't believe for a second that the economy grew 65%, but at least they're comparing the same figure, year over year... and, of course, they're going to select the one that paints the SL economy in the best light. A lot of it has to do with the XStreet/OnRez acquisition. I know that in the case of SLBoutique, deposits / withdrawals made a fair percentage of our total transactions, and those would count.

Second Life's Nascera now nascent

Welcome to the metaverse, a place where you can be anything you dream of! A place where you can build anything in your mind's eye! A place where imagination can go far on this ultimate empty blank canvas!

That sounds like work. Fuck it, let's make suburbia!

Linden Lab punctures education community with newly registered trademark

Oct 1st 2009 10:56AM (Massively)
Their complete lack of consideration for years of effort people has spent building up brands of their own - not to mention search engine rankings - is really inconsiderate. They fully and officially endorsed the use of SL* domain names years ago, going so far as to issue a "fan site" pack including logos. I really wish they would reconsider this practice... they're just shooting themselves in the feet but alienating some of their biggest supporters and promoters.

-Tim

A sneak peek at the unreleased Second Life setup tool

5,000 educators seems like an odd number. There are way more than 5,000 educators involved with Second Life... do they mean 5,000 concurrent educators at any time? I'm curious where that number came from.

Second Life celebrates sixth anniversary

What do you mean, "people involved"? Granted, I haven't been involved with the 2008 or 2009 editions, but have been in touch with the organizers enough to know they're still the ones running the show and doing the work as a labor of love. Commenting on off-the-cuff comments and rumors as fact does a real disservice to the hard, unpaid, and often thankless work the organizers and volunteers do.

I've got a legal contract in front of me which clearly spells things out legally. I'd be curious to know who's saying these things, but it sounds like they were off-the-cuff remarks, and not formal statements.

It is a shame you've never had an opportunity to attend, however, conventions have started to pop up outside the United States, which is good. All it takes is one person to get something started.

-Flip

Second Life celebrates sixth anniversary

Just a clarification: the Second Life Community Convention (SLCC) is not Linden Lab's event, although clearly they participate extensively. It is organized and run by a non-profit organization, The Future United. A multi-year contract was signed between Linden Lab and The Future United giving explicit permission to use their names and marks in 2007, thus why it is still allowed to be referred to as SLCC, and use the SL logo within the SLCC logo.

Unless something has happened recently that I don't know about, heh...

Second Life 2.0: A sneak peek at the new user-interface [updated]

Jun 12th 2009 11:37AM (Massively)
This gets a fairly large "bleh" from me. These tweaks are long overdue, but until they have support for multiple windows, I don't really consider it an interface upgrade. Why can't I have my viewer separate from chat, build, and friends lists? A very large percentage of VW enthusiasts have multiple monitors - use them.
