The only permadeath that I've encountered is Hardcore Mode in Diablo 2. I used to post frequently on forums where the perfect pk game was discussed and the idea of permadeath came up a few times. There didn't seem to be any way to implement it that would appeal to a large market. The best idea I personally ever had for it was permadeath by zone, ie, you only die permanently if you die in these certain zones.
I personally think the death penalties in most of todays MMOs aren't really penalties at all. XP loss is a good start but it doesn't seem as creative as it could be. As it is now, in most MMOs it is pretty hard to even die, yet people still complain about having to walk back to their corpse or pay a small fee to remove a debuff. You lost when you totally shouldn't have and you don't think you should have any kind of punishment? How else are you going to learn?
I can't believe people are STILL complaining about that, pretty gdarn pathetic if you ask me, but you didn't.
The funny part is they don't even care to know why it happened or why they can't just open up a pre-NGE server.
It happened because greedy heads of companies wanted WoW profit, surprise surprise.
They can't do a pre-NGE server because there aren't any of the original developers still working on it. The new guys have no friggin idea how to revert it back because SOE goes through SWG devs like toilet paper.
I still play the game, it's the only one I can stomach.
I think it's funny that everyone complains about how all their stuff became useless with the change, and now all of those useless items are considered rare collectible artifacts worth millions of credits.
Meh, whiners will be whiners. Any place that mentions SWG gets at least 2 comments of butt sore boobs crying about something that happened years ago, I just don't get it.
This issue was over most MMO players' heads imo. I say most because not everyone's first MMO was WoW so not everyone rushed to defend it to the death (as did many newbs).
It must suck to be Bartle, it's like he can never speak his mind without a mob of newbs attacking him.
I think a good reason why people were more "into" MMOs back in the day is because they were new. To a lot of peoples eyes these new games were basically D&D on a massive scale, which of course is awesome. Nowadays, sooo many kids that don't even care about D&D play as well, for different reasons. They haven't even heard of roleplay until this game (wowhat?) and then they try to do it and look like complete asshats.
I don't think this has much to do with the original post, I honestly am not quite sure what the point of the original post was. But I know that most of the older MMOers (meaning played old MMOs not old people) just aren't as immersed in the games nowadays, and I can't blame them.
Over at PKer.org we used to discuss the idea of permadeath, usually ending: "no game would ever implement it". They won't as long as they keep trying to copy WoW and reach WoW numbers.
Just think of UO back in the day, you die, all your loot is gone unless you make it back in time. Those were the good ol days, when you could strike out on your own and create your own story. Become the king you think you are or the thief you've always wanted to be. Not anymore, nowadays you have to fit into a mold and be happy about it.
