wow, what? I'm not especially interested in defending avatar, although I enjoyed it, and I don't really care about 3D but... What makes you think pixely single player games on the DS need saving?
I want to see somebody do a blended style like Team fortress 2, the new prince of persia, or Shadowrun. That style hasn't been explored to anwhere near the level I'd like to see.
Plus I always figured that unique rendering styles would be a no-brainer for mmos. Something like for instance Windwaker, which has been mentioned before, is stylistic enough that you could replay it later and still appreciate the graphics. They have a much better longevity than straight up realism, which is important if you don't want people leaving your mmo as soon as something with better graphics comes along.
I absolutely hate how this argument always seems to boil down to 'gritty realism' vs 'chibi anime'. What if the rendering style in the article picture was used on a realistically proportioned model with an actual face? Which category does that fall into? How about an mmo done Okami style?
I don't have a problem with people preferring realism. I generally don't ever have a problem with preferences altogether. What I don't like is how all non-realism rendering styles get lumped in to this 'cel shaded' term and equated to the style used in the article picture. Especially since the things that bother me personally about that picture have nothing to do with the rendering method.
immersion=/=realism I don't understand why people think this. I find the most immersive settings are often the most unrealistic ones. Stylized graphics, gameplay and settings are far more interesting to me than realism.
