Patents threaten virtual worlds, MMOGs

Dec 12th 2008 6:57PM (Massively)
@DeathMutant: You don't just patent ideas. Furthermore, after the recent Bilski Decision, it seems that if you can do something "in your head", even if slower than a computer, it is not patentable, even if "original". Software is math, it is the notation system for complex math. As such, it isn't patentable; that's why we have had decades of issues related to software patents.

Patents threaten virtual worlds, MMOGs

More proof that patents on software should be abolished, much like patents on business processes have fallen. (a.k.a. the Bilski Decision)

Patents were design to protect tangible inventions, not mathematical concepts.

Does it really matter? Do you really get "enraged"? I don't know that I get pissed off that my 500GB drive is actually 500 000 000 000 instead of 536 870 912 000 bytes. Most people never fill their drives up anyways.

I suggest the solution to this problem lies less in restating the unit, and more in psychotherapy...

Facebook announces Facebook Ads

So, now I get why I suddenly get so much more crap in my Facebook page. I was always wondering where all those stupid VISA ads were coming from.

Greed always ruins a good thing.

#15 - Your comment makes no sense. Enterprise purchases are driven by *stability* and *reliability* first, not performance.

My guess is they cater to the enterprise market first because the margins are higher (when it's the company that pays, purchasers tend to me a little more lenient) and they can get to their ROI breakeven faster than the low-margin pissing contests in the retail market.
