The Daily Grind: How many times do you try before you give up?

Jan 14th 2012 10:34PM (Massively)
If I'm with a group of friends, I'll keep going almost indefinitely. If I'm with a pickup group, 5 or 6 times. Less if they seem incompetent - unwilling to try new ideas. By myself, I'm much, much less likely to retry things in an MMO. I hate the frustration, so I'll either shelve it for later, or delete the quest.

Some of that stuff really irked me about TOR, especially since Jedi seem gimped, and when I played Sith it seemed like their difficulty was higher.

The Anvil of Crom: Quality-of-life improvements for 2012

As a disgruntled former player, I think they'd be better off a) fixing the broken 3.1 release, b) improving their support system, and c) caring about their subscriber base. Not in that order.

The Daily Grind: Would you use an official wiki in your game of choice?

Jan 3rd 2012 8:50AM (Massively)
Absolutely. Paragon Wiki made City of Heroes so much easier to use, and I'm talking about from the standpoint of a 6 year subscriber. There's just so much to forget, and having an easily navigable reference is key.

The lack of a single decent, comprehensive resource for Age of Conan sucked. Apparently as waves of users left, their half-finished wikis died and you can find the remains of a half dozen rotting corpses left stinking up the internets. Fortunately, between google, the U.S forums and the Euro forums a little work will get you an answer for most issues.

I think a good reference probably clears up a lot of chaff off the forums, too.

The Anvil of Crom: The winter of our discontent

I started playing AoC on a whim, figuring it would keep me occupied in the few short months I had between unsubbing from City of Heroes and the start of The Old Republic. I found AoC gameplay to be a wonderful experience. Graphics, story, models, animations, voices, combat, controls... They suited me really well. I expected to free-play a character to 80, but I wound up buying a 60 day timecard. Not because I felt gimped, either. I was even debating whether or not to cancel my TOR pre-order. Even having played 3 weekends of the TOR Beta.

But I am not suited to buggy games. At all. I haven't even teamed with anyone I don't know, and haven't touched any of the content that's really crippling the game (L80 raids and PvP). After a week of bugs, crashes, lag, more lag, 5x daily server restarts, 4 petitions to recover missing items, and poor support, I canceled my AoC account. I don't play games for the grief.

The Old Republic had fewer bugs as a Beta test than an hour's worth of AoC v3.1 gameplay.

The Daily Grind: What's the most iconic MMO city?

Oct 31st 2011 4:07PM (Massively)
Talos Island in City of Heroes.

Originally because all the stores were comparatively close to the train station, and it was the stepping stone to Peregrine Island. Then because my base portal (with storage and crafting tables) was close to the auction house and metro, then because the Oroborous portal dropped close to the auction house and my base portal. And the hill for Rikti and Halloween raids.

The Anvil of Crom: A four-month F2P report card

Tortage is one of the best introductions to any RPG I've ever played, and it's free. I'm at level 55 now, and the only reason I bought a timecard is because it was on sale. I haven't felt any need for in-game store purchases, and considering the prices I see, I'm unlikely to ever have any interest in that regard. Getting a single character to level 80 is my sole interest at the moment, and I imagine I will be content with my experience and to move on when I get there.

Exclusive: Designing the expanded Incarnate trees for City of Heroes

@j1083 The new inherent fitness pool also allows you to add three powers pre-L20 that were being taken up by swift, heal and stamina, so more attacks. Leveling seems a lot faster these days, too. Find a sewer team and levels fly by.

What a waste of 8 fingers. Call me when they figure out a way to use the more flexible digits than thumbs.
