Exclusive: Smedley on the sunsetting of Star Wars Galaxies [Updated]

Jun 24th 2011 4:59PM (Massively)
I can see why it's ending -- two games in the same (ok, not exactly the same!) Star Wars Universe. And one of them is an older game with a stable population that is not growing, even declining.

I agree, it does look SOE is ending this very well -- a six month announcement, extra stuff, lots of attention to the game. It gives you time to say goodbye and figure out where to go next. And it's great that the development team doesn't lose their jobs.

All in all, if there has to be an ending -- it looks like a good ending.

I've got to get back into LOTRO.

I've got to get back into Guild Wars -- it's so beautiful.

World of Warcraft bloggers fight back against RIFT

Rift is a good game. I played in the beta but decided not to continue for a variety of reasons -- but it's a good game.

WoW is a great game to start, right now, if you never played it. I'm not interested in end game, I don't intend to raid, I'll probably rarely group, and I don't PvP. It's really fun being the the person who visits a game world after the big party is over. I play on an established roleplay server and it's very nice at the lower levels. Not to many people and the people are either into their own thing or friendly - no griefers, no meanies, not crowded. I'm having a great time.

There's a lot to be said for playing an MMO after the hype is all gone, particularly if you like a peaceful environment. I recommend it.

I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2, a lot, but you know -- by then, after I get into GW2, I'll probably dip back into the wonderful GW1, assuming Arenanet keeps it going.

The Daily Grind: Would you try an MMO with "realistic" combat?

No twitch gameplay for me -- not into it, can't do it, all that.

The Daily Grind: Have you ever bought gold?

Mar 12th 2011 10:40PM (Massively)
No -- because it's against the terms of service, and if I did it, I'm kind of clueless about these things -- by my luck to get caught. So, just play the games in a regular way.

I do think it's silly you can't buy gold in most games. I don't equate gaming with having a job, I equate it with having fun.

I do realize that gold selling does mess up the economy.

Looks good. I'd like to play a female human with the same outfit as the character in the last video -- think that one was a male.

Wonder if I'll get that.

Haven't played in awhile -- though I do love it. I have a character I planned to keep permanently in presearing. Think I'll check it out!

The Daily Grind: What is the next MMO innovation?

Feb 26th 2011 2:43PM (Massively)
What Saker said, a living world.
This is what I want -- but I have no idea if any of this will happen

1. It's a world first, and a game second.

2. Things to do other than combat, things that make sense. i realize that combat is understandable, explainable and you can build on it. War games have been around forever. But -- why can't I advance by a skill such as diplomacy for sentient beings, or a skill to make a monster not want to kill me?

3. A world story (the world changes), and a personal story. We'll see if Guild Wars 2 can carry this off.

5. A mix of instancing and persistent worlds. Instanced areas that stick around -- my own private parts of the world. We'll see if Guild Wars can carry this off.

4. Divorce how you look in a game, at least mostly, with your skill or level.

5. Mix of synchronous and asynchronous play. I don't understand why, for example, a group of people can get things done without all of us being together. I'll go find the map. You craft us special swords. Our herbalist will go find us herbs to make special potions, which our alchemist will make. Then a party will go to the special place on the map, and then, using the weapons and the potions, kill the beings who stole the thing we need to make our magic guild hall. They get the thing we need (maybe a special stone), they come back and our guild hall is further along. This is simplistic scenario, but you get the idea. We each do our part in our own time. It takes as long as it's going to take, but who cares? Then again, I'd like a world where being competitive with each other in game -- it does not work

6. I can make things in game, combining works fine, and give them as gifts. I'm thinking of something different than making a sword. Why can't I import textures?

7. You want to play with people on a quest, and it all works out. Forget about whether you are all at the right level, or you have two healers and 1 magician and no one else, all at different levels. If it's formal grouping, where we all enter a dungeon (or something), the dungeon adjusts to what we can do. And of course, we only kill the big boss once, and get the appropriate rewards

8. Rewards should be something other than loot -- you get to see a wonderous thing, go to a new area. Rewards should sometimes be about the world, not just an exercise in shopping.

9. Get rid of end game. Yes, I realize that this is contraversial, but then again, I don't like PvP either. If you have to have endgame -- it means you get to go a wonderful new place.

10.. A way to play together in game, without having to formally group, and without caring about levels or classes. Something bad is happening, in the world, and we band to stop it, on the fly, Let's see if the live events in Guild Wars 2 work like that. If we are all at different levels, the game figures out how we can have an experience that is rewarding.

11. Support for letting people make their own live events. Why can't I have a party with new stuff to give people? Why can't a group of us have a festival, invite people and have games, with rewards?

This isn't Second Life (I can hear you saying this) -- I want a world with more structure, more stuff to do, more game elements than Second Life. I'm also not interested in having people make a living in the game, as in Second Life. What I would like is my MMOs to be different, to have what I consider more of a world feel, than a game.

You get the idea.

Terrible twos? A look at Darkfall on its second anniversary

Feb 25th 2011 9:42PM (Massively)
Since I have a low tolerance for forced PvP and ganking, I won't play But -- the description was good, interesting, thanks.

Here's my question. One of the posters above describes playing "only 3-4 hours a day" and then described themselves as a "casual player".

That's what constitutes casual player in Darkfall? That doesn't sound casual to me!
