The hackers strip guild banks as well to send money to other people. The guild and player report the account hacked, blizzard refunds the guild/player their money.
The gold sellers have created new gold in a closed economy, because the people they stole it from were reimbursed.
Replacing the battery (or just disconnecting the battery long enough for it to reset) would be _BAD_. The authenticator would be unusable at that point, because of the algorithm inside of it that calculates what the next random number will be would be reset and no longer match up with what the server expected.
RSA-Security was the first to create these types of things and theirs usually had a 'replace by' date on the back. Theirs usually died not that long after the date (a month to a year from what I saw). Being as the ones from Vasco only display anything when you hit the buttons, this should cause a much longer battery life if you aren't constantly hitting the button for no reason (or it is getting hit in your pocket).
But as I said before, due to the nature of how the system works, battery replacement is just something impossible for this particular product to offer even if they wanted to allow it.
