Anytime you go into SecondLife and visit anywhere on the 'Adult' continent you will be creeped out. If you really have a desire to be creeped out search for 'shemale'. Nuff said.
I just ended a >5 year significant business presence in Second Life. There is no way, no how, that anyone who does due dilligence at Microsoft will be able to hold onto their job if they recommend a purchase of Linden Labs. There are about 50,000 "avid" users on Second Life and most of them do little to contribute to the virtual economy. Support is non-existant. Most of the mainland resembles a virtual rustbelt with a sh&tted up landscape and no control over what the masses are doing. Theft is rampant and you are more likely to be screwed over by a landlord or business partner with no reprecussions, then ever before.
Microsoft will not want to associte itself with the pornography that continues to be the main attraction and even if they decide their PR can deal with that, they will not want to put forth the resources necessary to clean-up the mess and provide even a mediocre level of support.
The code is open-source. There are many grids running outside of LL and anyone with half a brain can develop a tweaked viewer.
Silly talk from someone who should pat themselves on the back for getting the media to pick this nonsense up.
The net loss over ten years probably is not that much -- certainly not enough to lose a Congressional seat. Nevada took in tens of thousands of Californians over the first seven years of the decade only to see a large number move back in the last couple of years.
As for Hong running for office. I don't fault anyone for being politically active and running for office but he is nuts if he thinks any part of his platform is going to fly in this election. As was mentioned earlier, CA is $20+ billion in the hole. They are in as bad of shape if not worse then Greece and the IMF is not going to bail them out. Reading Hong's platform it appears as if his mind is in a video game and he has no sense of reality.
The disappointments in this game are numerous and this interview leads me to wonder if they feel they can b.s. us or if they truly believe that they have put out a quality product.
I won't speculate as to how long this should have remained in development before rollout but it is painfully obvious that they have harmed the brand and have left anxious players with little of substance to enjoy the experience.
This is an industry website. Of course they are going to logroll for these companies because they want to stay in good with them and land interviews and such.
If anyone comes to this site or any other industry site looking for hard-hitting, truthful journalism, they are deluded. That is not to fault the writers here. They do a good job but they work on a site with an interest in seeing their industry succeed.
I'm just happy to see that this will thin the herd of the freeloaders who would be whining if the price were $5 for 6 slots. The worst thing about F2P are those who complain endlessly and have no concept of what it takes to keep these MMO's running.
I just want to know if Ms. Paiz feels any personal shame when she mentions THERE on her resume? The only thing worse than that for an MMO developer is to tout being part of The Sims Online.
For the umpteenth time, Cryptic appears to have done zero research as to what their demographic wanted in this game. That, or they knew this feature would be on a top ten list of most players yet were so anxious to get the game out that they figured they would dangle this carrot in front of players who are now placated at the prospect of seeing this in a future release. One that will cost significant monies.
This abortion on the Star Trek franchise continues.
The Cryptic people are geniuses. Their plan to get the geeks to debate what to call the Undine deflects time spent chatting about how God-awful this game is.
If you find that amount of text confusing you should probably stay away from the game. However, those who can view web pages with several blocks of text may want to try PC.
I just got into it this week and am still exploring the environs but the land space is massive and while getting in-game money without depositing is an insane grind, it appears to be worth checking out. And, the community is supportive.
Be warned though that if you are looking to make decent money out of it -- you won't. Like all casino gaming, the house has the edge and the best you can hope for (realistically) is to cut your losses through looting, mining and/or crafting.
Vehicles would be nice. Did I mention the land area is massive?
