Closure review: Go into the light

Mar 29th 2012 3:32PM (Joystiq)
@RichardMitchell Oh ok. Now that I look for it, I see the orange PS3 tag in the title and the small font text that says it's on PSN. I scanned the review and the sidebar and didn't see it. So maybe it's just a design thing more than a failing on their part. I don't read enough Joystiq reviews to know to look for the little orange bubbles.

Is it just me or is it not mentioned anywhere what platform(s) this is on? This could be an iPad game for all I know.

I Am Alive review: Do not resuscitate

Mar 7th 2012 4:07PM (Joystiq)
After the developer's incredibly derisive and dismissive comments about PC gaming and PC gamers I had planned to avoid this game like the plague. I'm glad I'm not missing much.

SoulCalibur 5 review: The old flame still burns

Jan 31st 2012 1:39PM (Joystiq)
Is it just me or does anyone have a problem with reviews that spend 90% of the text detailing just why they're so upset about specific details of a game, devote a few sentences to saying "But it's also very good" and then give it a pretty good score? It's like.. you need to read your own review and realize what the overall tone is and if it reflects the tone you'd like to convey.

People are biased to focus on the parts that stood out to them and those are often the parts that are disappointing or irritating, but that doesn't mean you're conveying the overall experience well.

Syndicate assembles four-player co-op trailer

@pukel I wish people would stop making this comparison. Deus Ex is a story, conversation, narrative quest based RPG with a first person perspective that is set in a cyberpunk world.

This is a straightforward action, hightly sylized and over the top violence FPS set in a cyberpunk world.

The only similarities are the setting (and hence graphical style) first person perspective, and closeness in being released. I only emphasize this because I think people going in expecting Deus Ex and getting a straight forward FPS are going to be disappointed, just like people who went into Deus Ex expecting a straight forward FPS were disappointed.

Metro 2033 only $5 on OnLive today

Sep 9th 2011 8:07PM (Joystiq)
@Axcalibur Hah, what's funny is that I'm not upset they're posting the 5 dollar OnLive deal, but that they didn't mention it's something like $3.16 if you subscribe to the monthly Playpack.

Now that's a deal. Batman was 69 cents for me. :P

New Darkfall video highlights environmental sounds

That's cool... some of that is stuff that is relatively new or at least associated with high end, high budget single player games (all the sound filtering based on location etc), but some of it is like... wait, they didn't have that before? Like location specific music themes I mean... what?

Impressions of OnLive, live on Vizio VIA Plus TV

Jan 7th 2011 3:54PM (Joystiq)
@eat it OnLive games are generally the PC game price (at least 10 dollars cheaper) and they have sales for 50-75% off games (including new ones) pretty frequently. Does Gamestop ever do that? I think that more than outweighs the 5-15 bucks you will get for used games if you're lucky.

The Soapbox: Sandboxes and the fear of FFA PvP

Dec 29th 2010 6:48PM (Massively)
@Dblade That may well be true, but I don't think that says anything to refute the idea that PvP is required for true roleplaying. I think it says more that EVE's system do not encourage engagement in lore, association or RP. EVE's systems revolve almost entirely around economy, so unsurprisingly that's the focus of the game.

If, however, the systems in the game supported people's associations to their races and engaged people in the lore and used the PvP as a vehicle for that, you would see more RP. One of the best ways to do that, which is severely under-utilized, is to place employees in the game in important positions, heroes, leaders, gods, whatever, to set an ideal model of lore and roleplaying. This is very difficult in multi-server games, but EVE is perfect for it.
