Massively's exclusive SWTOR interview: Starships, PvP, and crafting!

Jun 16th 2010 6:49AM (Massively)
Just remember that WoW was initially EQ2 with a twist (nonstop questing). You don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a successful MMO. You need a fun game. The fact that their biggest supposed "twist" is a Bioware-type story playing out is incredibly heartening.

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite MMO soundtrack?

Jun 3rd 2010 2:31PM (Massively)
I play LotRO, and don't get me wrong, it's got wonderful music, but Blizzard wins this one hands down. I'm going to narrow WoW right down to Wrath of the Lich King.

Wrath of the Lich King's Assault on New Avalon is definitely up there. The entire Death Knight starting experience is so chiseled and well-done.

If you want variety, then there's the Garden of Life track on the WotLK soundtrack which reminded me of Monkey Island.

Then there's the music for the Culling of Stratholme
The Nexus (a little bit electric)
Ulduar
The Algalon fight:
The Argent Tournament at Night
Arthas' Death Sequence:

The original Starcraft was 60 dollars. It was the first video game I purchased with earned money (not allowance cash), so it left a bit of a mark :)

Activision: Farmers Could Kill WoW?

Mar 4th 2010 1:46PM (Massively)
For one the statement does not name Farmville or any browser game- it's just an obvious statement that if WoW loses 5% of its playerbase due to attrition or someone else coming in and making something people prefer, then Activision makes (a lot) less money. By law they have to tell investors (like myself) these things. It covers their butts in case games like Star Wars: The Old Republic become "the next WoW" causing their profits to be less awesome than they were the year before.

Like, if their profit falls by a tiny percent and institutional investors smell blood in the water, the institutional investor jumps ship and things get really bad for Activision. If Activision did not acknowledge the obvious, the institutional investor could spin around and sue Activision for misleading them into thinking their dominant position was unreachable by others.

The sky is not falling, and Activision does not think that Farmville will obliterate WoW. The success of Farmville you can bet is hot on the minds of every publishing executive in the gaming industry, however.

Armory's stats are screwed up. On one page it says my druid has 2400 honorable kills, on the statistics page it says I have over 4500.

Front page:
Lifetime Honorable Kills: 2432

Statistics:
Total Honorable Kills 4347
