I'm going to assume that he went for the lesser 'customer focused' job. That's like working in a call center and doing whatever you can to get off the phones. I can't say I blame him, but if he gave up that job for design (which he hasn't really ever been successful at), seems like a poor career choice.
I am pretty sure there are no longer restrictions on servers. My character is as old as the original launch, and a few newbs I got to play with me were still able to join the Brandywine server.
EQ2 got pretty monotonous early on and it just kept dragging its feet. I just don't see how they are expecting to win against turbine on the F2P model with such a greedy stance. It is literally an instant turnoff, because you can't even get out of the character creation gate without it slapping you in the face.
LOTRO on the other hand at least waits until you are around the lvl 30 mark to start shoveling it your way and none of it feels direly required if you just wanted to enjoy a F2P experience.
So basically, someone pirates their server and they get away with enough to make StarCraft 2? I highly doubt that server made 85 million. Here comes the appeal.
The same day they decide to open the beta they figure its ok to run a 'routine' 14 hour server maintenance.
They could at least be straight up and say there was a major system fault. I can't say I'm going to enjoy their less than straight up approach to announcing issues.
