- Choose a server
To begin our tour, we choose a server. Currently there are 2 servers, with 2 more coming soon. Each server has several channels that allow you to escape lag if the more popular channels get too crowded. Your characters are easily transferable across channels on a server, but not across servers.
- Choose a class
From here you wi begin to create a character by choosing one of 3 empty slots and clicking 'Create'. There are currently 4 classes to choose from: Swordsman, Thief, Mage and Scout. Class advancement into subclasses happens at level 30 and then again at level 80.
The Swordsman uses a sword and has high HP and defense. The Thief uses a dagger and is the master of critical attacks. They also can evade much better than other classes. The Mage uses magic, as you might expect, but also has high mana and magic defense. Finally, the Scout uses a bow or a gun with long-range attacks and have much higher accuracy than the other classes.
- Francis Town
Once a character has been created, it will go through a short tutorial and eventually end up in a town like Francis Town, one of the 2 cities available in the closed beta version of WonderKing currently.
- Getting around
Movement and controls may take a bit of getting used to if you're a regular WASD gamer, but they're not too difficult. Basically, you will use the arrow keys for direction, with the Alt key being for jump (click twice to jump higher) and Ctrl to attack. Spells and potions can be assigned keys in your skill bar, but most typically, they're ASDF, etc. You hold the down arrow and Alt to jump down to a lower level and click one of the side arrows to sprint. Once you have that down, you're golden.
- Bustling city
The cities are especially helpful in finding and forming parties for your adventures. Parties have a maximum number of 5 players and can receive certain monster points to distribute among the party members. The leader can choose how these are distributed.
- Finding your way around
This is your game map that contains small dots showing areas in which you can teleport. Teleport NPCs help with the actual transportation, but you'll notice something interesting about these dots. When you mouse over them, they show you exactly what types of monsters you'll find in that particular area. This is especially helpful when you're searching for a certain type of monster or even a boss for a quest.
- Island travel
Traveling between islands by boat is also a viable means of travel. Be aware that most areas are restricted by level.
- Quest Log
Your quest log is very easy to read as it explains goals and rewards. Pressing 'M' on your keyboard will also show a mini map that depicts small red dots for enemies in your quest.
- Character Stats
You stats are displayed on this screen, and mousing over each stat will give you a better understanding of what it does and which classes benefits the most from each.
The crafting in WonderKing is much as you'd expect from your typical MMO. You buy recipes from certain NPCs like this one to learn. Now all you need is materials...
- Crafting materials
Using dropped and purchased resources, you can complete your recipes and craft the items you need.
Mining is used to gather special materials in the game. To mine, simply purchase a pickax from a merchant NPC and pick away. You will want to buy multiple pickaxes as they as consumed on use. But the rewards are worth it, especially when you find yourself the owner of a shiny new rare item buried deep within the stone.
- Monster Book
Your Monster Book holds special cards you find in your adventures that can unlock certain monster forms. These forms allow your character to assume the physical body of any of these creatures. NDOORS points out that this is mostly used for fun during events or parties with friends.
- Open Market
The Open Market area is where items are bought, sold or traded with other players. You can literally set up a small shop (as seen in the upper left-hand corner) and advertise your wares. As you can see from this shot, even in closed beta, the market area is popular.
- Auction House
If you don't want to sit around and wait for players to buy your items, you also have the option to sell via the auction house. If you choose this way, there is a 7% sales tax applied to each sale.
- Storage Warehouse
WonderKing also includes a warehouse NPC who will store extra items for you. Through the Cash Shop, you also have access to more storage space, both on your character and in the warehouse.
- PvP Arenas
PvP is available to any players in WonderKing. Simply right-click on another player and challenge them to a fight. If they accept, you'll both be transported to a special PvP arena that features certain obstacles that add to the challenge.
- Winning in PvP
You can only have 3 skills in PvP, so make sure you choose wisely! If you're victorious, you can earn special PvP points that will go towards in-game rewards for your player.
In all, WonderKing is an easy game to get into. The UI is clear and accessible. The goals and activities are fairly typical of any MMO you'd find out there, with the main differences being the 2D perspective and the controls (which are still not hard to master). If you're a fan of games like MapleStory, you should certainly give WonderKing a shot.
