The Best of Massively: Our top 5 weirdest news stories
- 5 - Richard Garriott's crazy-awesome house
Ultima Online and Tabula Rasa creator Richard Garriott is full of eccentric win. We could have just as easily made a fuss about his imminent voyage into outer space, but we thought it'd be more fun to highlight something less well known: his crazy-awesome house.
His Austin, TX mansion (he calls it Britannia Manor) looks pretty normal on the outside, but he's pimped the inside with hidden passages and bizarre artifacts, making it resemble the dungeons in his role-playing games.

- 4 - Sword of the Nude World
Imagine that you're playing World of Warcraft with your eight year old child or younger sibling. You've been having fun together so far, but you're in for a shock. The next time you log in, all the characters in the world are completely naked in a totally anatomically correct sort of way.
That actually happened in the Korean game Grenada Espada, which is known by the name Sword of the Nude -- err, Sword of the New World in North America. We reported the story on our very first day of publication!

- 3 - The answer to EVE Online's Ultimate Question is 42
If you've experienced Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in any of the mediums in which it's been manifested, you know the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42. At least, it is in Adams' fantastical and absurdist universe of fiction.
But that number is the basis for another one as well: New Eden, the setting of EVE Online. Developer CCP used a scientific model to spawn the stars and planets of EVE. The computer that generated the universe by that model needed a number to start with. In honor of Adams' fabulously funny books, CCP chose 42 as the ultimate number for its universe!

- 2 - Age of Conan's accidental breast reductions
Dealing with bugs is par for the course for MMO launches. Age of Conan was not an exception in that sense, but it was exceptional for the sheer oddity of one of its bugs. A patch released for the game caused an error in character model morph values, significantly reducing the size of female player characters' breasts.
Funcom quickly fixed the problem, saying: "The plastic surgeons of Hyboria apologize for the inconvenience."

- 1 - Elf ear plastic surgery
On his clinic's website, Hungarian plastic surgeon Dr. Lajos Nagy claims that he started a cultural movement in New York among young people -- plastic surgery to add points to the human ear so it resembles that of a faun or an elf. Nagy claims that this subculture did this not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because the new form aids hearing, particularly for listening to music. He even suggests that "faun clubs" exist in New York, where only patrons with pointed ears are admitted.
We have never been able to confirm the validity of this clinic's website, and we've never heard of these faun clubs, but whether it's true or not, it's quite amusing. These ears seem a bit more modest than the comically long ears of World of Warcraft's Night Elves, though!
