Meet the Team
- Meet the Team: Michael Zenke
"I love participating in an open world, being able to see the achievements of others and allowing them to see mine. I'm a sucker for game lore, be it Tolkienien in depth or the nouveau-fantasy of Guild Wars. Since the advent of Achievements and the like in games I've absolutely loved checking those boxes off; I'm a sucker for gamerscore. I even tend to like solo quest grinding if the mood strikes me. There's little about MMOs I don't like, honestly."

"I could care less about the next Oblivion, Portal, or Resident Evil because they just don't offer a dynamic massive multi-player experience. When I play a game, I want to feel like I am a part of something big (even though I hate zergs). I am also fiercely competitive and want to test my skills against the skills of others. For me, there is little satisfaction in beating a scripted boss, encounter, or puzzle. Bartle calls me a cold-blooded killer. Bartle knows."

"More often than not, when you see my name beneath a headline at Massively, it's in connection with something sci-fi. The impending wave of science fiction and post-apocalyptic themed MMOs means this is a great time for me, both as a gamer and a writer, and I hope I'm carrying this over to my work here."

- Meet the Team: Lesley Smith
"I think I like them mainly because of the social aspect, I should probably be a bit of an RPer (except I'm on a PvP server -- boo). I love the fantasy, exploration and lore aspects in particular but hate grinding, even if it is a part of the game."

- Meet the Team: Lemuel Pew
"I look forward to the day when the term 'MMO' doesn't even apply anymore because games will ambiguously connect players in ways the current gameplay mechanics don't resemble at all."

"I run a small causal friendly guild in Guild Wars and we have a different night of the week for that. I mostly play Mesmer there and very much enjoy that quirky profession. With its heavy basis in conditional logic and reflex timing it is quite unlike most classes found in most other MMOs and I love the experimental nature of perfecting the eight-skill hot bar, something I have yet to achieve."

"I think it's always hard to beat someone's first experience in an MMO world, which is why EverQuest has to be right up there with my all-time favorites."

"Sparkflower sprinted from The Last Bridge to Rivendell at level 19, arriving at the gates of Imladris with about two points of morale. There never was a prettier sight than seeing the vale of Imladris open up in front of you, after being repeatedly mauled by bears and boars nearly twice your level."

"My wife's also a CoX player, so we duo a lot and have characters that work together. Every time a new issue brings a new powerset or a proliferated one, I have to roll at least one new alt. I think our most recent projects were a fridge and a microwave oven from the future. He's a hot kitchen appliance, she's a cold kitchen appliance. They fight crime!"

- Alexis Kassan
"LotRO usually sees me playing a Hobbit hunter. I've also been enjoying playing an Elf Champion. The Dwarf Guardian is mostly there just to boil leather for the other two, sad as that may sound."

- Shawn Schuster
"I'm an achievement junkie and an alt-a-holic, mainly. I enjoy playing with a small group of really good friends who can joke around on Vent or TS throughout the mission. I rarely join PUGs, and when I do, I'm quickly reminded why I rarely do. However, when I play a single-player game now, it just feels too empty for me."

- Samuel Axon
"The original appeal for me was the idea of having this virtual society where you could make a whole new name for yourself, and a world that you could explore. I feel like that's been downplayed since EverQuest and WoW. It's a lot more focused and automated. So the appeal now is being able to keep in touch with old friends, mostly from college, who live all over the world."

"Sure, I could play multi-player over Xbox live and get my friend fix, but there's something about logging into a persistent world where time has passed and things have changed while you were away."

"The one game I've never stopped playing throughout it all is EVE Online. Perhaps it's because no other game out there even comes close to EVE's "harsh universe" feel or PvP style or maybe it's just that the game's two free major expansions per year has kept me interested. All I know is I've been playing EVE for almost five years I still love it."

- Colin Brennan
"I love the idea of a shared world with a shared storyline and the thought of having an impact on people on a server-wide scale. There's just something so much cooler about adventuring with your friends and doing things as a group."

"MMOs are progressive. Why spend an hour playing an offline game where you can pick up exactly where you left off a couple of days before when you can spend time in a world that is ever changing with n00bs getting ever pwned. It's awesome!"

"I contribute the weekly column, Behind the Curtain. Instead of having a real job on the site posting up actual news, I'm lucky enough to just hang around and ramble on for a few hundred words every seven days, in a general opinion-based format."
