The game has become a cultural phenomenon <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/world-of-warcraft-cranks-it-up-to-11-million/">played by 11 million people</a>, so it's gotten quite a bit of mainstream media attention -- that is to say, it's not just a geek thing.<br /><br />The New York Times has often dedicated a word or two to MMOs like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/28/the-new-york-times-finds-eve-online-intriguing/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, but it seems that NY Times writer Seth Schiesel was away from the former nearly a year. Like just about everyone else, though, he's been lured back into the world of Azeroth by the recently released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> expansion. He <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/05/arts/television/05warc.html?_r=3&amp;ref=arts">wrote a touching piece about the all his feelings when he returned</a>, nothing the expansion's relatively casual design and describing the experience of connecting with old friends after a year of change. He went into it with trepidation, but it ended up being a homecoming.<br /><br />But perhaps we can read something else into his return. You might look at it as a sign that the appeal for these games will never fade. Everyone can get hooked on the social experience <em>World of Warcraft </em>and games like it provide, and <em>Wrath</em>'s success might be evidence that this young form of entertainment has its best years ahead of it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/06/the-new-york-times-logs-back-into-world-of-warcraft/">The New York Times logs back in to World of Warcraft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6201895.html">EA has made another move</a> in what looks like an overall strategy to ramp up its MMO efforts by acquiring J2M, a South Korean game development studio known for making top notch free-to-play MMOs for the Asian market. The company is 50 employees strong, so it has the potential to crank out some quality products.<br /><br />Just what will those products be? Your guess is as good as ours. <a href="http://www.ea.com">EA</a> Asia president Jon Niermann was quoted saying that the studio will work on both "new properties and powerful EA franchises." This is not the first time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA </a>has set up shop in Korea. Back in January the company <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/eas-world-conquest-continues-with-new-korean-dev-studio/">announced plans to open a studio there</a> to work on online versions of the <em>NBA Street</em> and <em>Battlefield</em> franchises. <br /><br />Add that to the big western MMO products from the company (<a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> and <a href="http://swtor.bioware.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>), and it looks like EA is pretty keen on the genre these days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/ea-acquires-j2m-a-south-korean-free-to-play-mmo-studio/">EA acquires J2M, a South Korean free-to-play MMO studio </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:00:00 EST. Earlier this year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/blizzard-wins-the-prank-wars/">Blizzard won the prank wars with <em>Molten Core</em></a>, a faux ATARI game based on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>'s Molten Core raid complete with eight directions of movement, glorious 2D graphics and, yes, sound. We bet you thought that was just a joke, and that everyone would have forgotten about it after a week had gone by, but guess what? It's back, and this time it's real!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamersuniversity.com/?page_id=209">Gamer's University made a "port" of the ATARI game for WIndows PCs</a>, and it includes all that was promised in Blizzard's trailer. One player plays as a priest, the other as a warrior, and each has eight movement directions and one action button (heal for the priest, attack for the warrior) with which to defeat the ten bosses. Hard to believe people used to pay big bucks for these sorts of games, isn't it?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=319065">Eurogamer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/world-of-warcraft-molten-core-raid-for-atari-becomes-reality/">World of Warcraft Molten Core raid for ATARI becomes reality</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc">GDC</a> way back at the beginning of this year, an MMO was all the rage that a lot of hardcore players probably haven't even heard of. The game was called <a href="http://www.maidmarian.com"><em>Sherwood</em></a>, and it was a hugely successful 3D game made only by two people. This was possible because it was built on the <a href="http://www.adobe.com/flash">Flash</a> platform.<br /><br />Cheap and quick development means that underdogs like Maid Marian (the company behind <em>Sherwood</em>) can produce something profitable, and in theory it would mean they could try something new -- although they rarely do. Millions of people have played <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/browser">browser-based games</a>, many of them Flash-based, but have you? If so, do they provide the basic gameplay you demand from an massively multiplayer virtual world, or were you left wondering why you even bothered?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/the-daily-grind-have-you-played-a-flash-mmo/">The Daily Grind: Have you played a Flash MMO?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. Do you have a strong preference for one particular group role, or do you try to vary your play experience? In either case, which role is most comfortable for you, and why? We're always interested to learn more about the psychology behind these games, so we're eager to see what you've got!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/30/the-daily-grind-tank-dps-healer-or-other/">The Daily Grind: Tank, DPS, Healer, or other?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/blog/post/691239/Web_Exclusive_Felicia_Day_The_Guild_Interview.html">G4TV's X-Play interviewed the lovely Felicia Day on video</a> about her soon-to-return web video series<em> <a href="http://www.watchtheguild.com">The Guild</a></em> and her past gaming experience. Fans of Ms. Day and her show will eat it up no matter what we say, of course, but we will note that she reveals what her main <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> character was and what games she played when she was a kid.<br /><br />Be sure and watch the video after the break, but if you just want the information (we'd think you'd be more interested in seeing Felicia Day's delightful personality than raw data, but here goes): her main was a Warlock (who apparently did some Alchemy on the side), and she had Priest and Mage alts. She grew up playing everything from <em>Zork </em>to <em>Wizardry</em> to <em>Nethack</em>, and has mostly been a PC gamer rather than a console one. We buy it -- she's got cred!<br /><br />Day is doing these appearances to promote <em>The Guild</em>'s second season, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/the-guild-strikes-a-deal-with-microsoft-becomes-a-timed-xbox-li/">debuts exclusively on Xbox Live today</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/felicia-day-talks-wow-addiction-characters-oldschool-pc-gaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Felicia Day talks WoW addiction, characters, oldschool PC gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/felicia-day-talks-wow-addiction-characters-oldschool-pc-gaming/">Felicia Day talks WoW addiction, characters, oldschool PC gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST. Virtual economies are a fascination for us, and <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> isn't the only game with people who spend much of their time playing the markets, of course -- <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> is rife with opportunities for rampant capitalism. Case in point: gold-making advice blog <a href="http://woweconomist.blogspot.com/2008/11/cashing-in-on-enchanting-northrend.html">The WoW Economist reports that some materials used by the Enchanting profession are selling for outrageously high prices</a> at the auction house post-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> launch -- an excellent time for money-minded players to cash in. <br /><br />Writer John Murphy points out that Infinite Dust and Greater Cosmic Essences are selling for 150g and 250g per stack, respectively, and that he made 2,300g in one Sunday afternoon taking advantage of the situation. The recommendation: disenchant, sell now! Level up Enchanting later! There are always these oddly destabilizing surges after expansions in these games, so it's good to know how to exploit them to the max. Go forth and become filthy rich, guys and gals!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/wow-enchanting-mats-are-selling-high-opportunists-to-the-auc/">WoW Enchanting mats are selling high, opportunists -- to the auction house!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Let's say that, like most folks, you only have one monitor. Let's also assume that you either prefer to enjoy games in all their full-screen glory, or your one monitor doesn't run at a resolution high enough to make multitasking while running a game in a window practical -- also probably true of most folks. But you're playing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> and you want to check <a href="http://www.thottbot.com">Thottbot</a>, or your e-mail. Well, very-specific-user, <a href="http://www.gotgame.com">GotGame</a> has a solution for you: <a href="http://rogue.gotgame.com/">Rogue, a browser that runs as a transparent overlay while you're playing games</a>.<br /><br />Rogue's visibility can be toggled on and off by pressing the F12 key, and it has customizable transparency settings. It doesn't work with all games, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> and <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> are the two MMOs that have been tested by the folks at GotGame and confirmed to be Rogue-friendly. No word on, say, <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> or <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> (<a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> already has a built-in browser, so no need there), but feel free to try and let us know how it goes.<br /><br />Note that for the moment, Rogue only runs in Windows. Mac users are out of luck, though to be honest, we're a bit surprised that neither Vista nor Leopard supports this kind of thing natively. Maybe next time, eh?</div>

<div align="left">Having looked at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/lineage-ii-update-pailaka-and-new-kamaloka/">Pailaka and New Kamaloka</a>, we're as pleased about <a href="http://www.lineage2.com"><em>Lineage II</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gracia-part-2"><em>Gracia Part 2</em></a> update as anyone, but we have to admit we're now a little... creeped out. <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> has described <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/news/graciapt2_01.html">another adventure area appearing in the update</a> -- Kratei's Cube -- and as awesome as it sounds, those demented killer anime doll monsters are just plain freaky. It's high fantasy, not <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094862/">Chucky</a>, alright?<br /><br />Kidding aside, we've got the scoop on what you can find in Kratei's Cube. Once you sign up through an NPC on Fantasy Isle, you'll be whisked away to a big maze that resets every 30 minutes. During each cycle, players kill monsters -- and each other -- in a competition to rack up the most points. Once things settle down, folks receive experience, SP, and Fantasy Isle coins based on their performance.<br /><br />The cool thing is that if you die in the maze, you'll pop back in with full health and mana, so there should be very little downtime. If you're in a party, carrying a cursed weapon, or of chaotic orientation, don't bother signing up though -- you won't be allowed in. Poor you!</div>

Alright, it's time for that gaming industry tradition of speculation based on vague quotes from developers! In <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/49939">an interview with Ten Ton Hammer</a>, <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> executive producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeffrey-steefel">Jeffrey Steefel</a> spoke about future updates to the game, saying that the best is yet to come because now that <a href="http://www.turbine.com">Turbine</a> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/lord-of-the-rings-online-mines-of-moria-launches/">moved into Moria</a>, the really interesting and fully-fleshed-out stuff from Tolkien's source material is only a few steps away.<br /><br />Among those interesting things is the land of Rohan, which fans of the books and movies will remember is a kingdom that prides itself on breeding and grooming the finest horses in Middle-earth. Steefel went on to say: "When we get to Rohan, does horsemanship become important? Yeah! Us and our horses would be strung up if we got to Rohan someday and didn't pay attention to horses. And it's just a matter of when."<br /><br />Mounts in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> have admittedly always been a bit basic (but in a good way!), so this could mean any number of things, but perhaps the most exciting possibility would be <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>-esque mounted combat. Go ahead and meditate on that for a bit, and read the interview for a few more vague quotes about the future of <em>LotRO</em> and the company's console plans if you feel compelled.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/turbine-horsemanship-to-become-important-when-lotro-reaches-r/">Turbine: Horsemanship to become "important" when LotRO reaches Rohan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. Each episode will appear first on <a href="http://www.xbox.com/live">Xbox Live</a>, and will only be available through the show's website four weeks later.<br /><br />The entirety of Season One is now available on Xbox Live, according to Felicia Day's personal blog. <a href="http://feliciaday.com/2008/11/the-guild-sponsored-can-i-believe-it-now/">The first episode of Season Two will start airing via the service tomorrow</a>, November 25th. The show will remain free to viewers through all venues, and ad supported -- including product placement by Sprint. Microsoft will have its hands in the ad revenue, but will give Day free creative reign. Also, the second season will be shot in HD to accommodate the Xbox 360.<br /><br />Looks like the scrappy underdog TV series about MMO players has hit the big time, and we're cheering Day on. Next stop: movie deal, right? Fortunately, Microsoft's contract promises that Day will be free to shop around outside of the company for movie and TV deals.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5097356/microsoft-picks-up-the-guild-exclusively">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/the-guild-strikes-a-deal-with-microsoft-becomes-a-timed-xbox-li/">The Guild strikes a deal with Microsoft, becomes a timed Xbox Live exclusive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Bet you'd just about forgotten about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> by this point, hadn't you? There was a big <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/">explosion of information</a> when <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> announced its iteration of the game in August, but since then, we've seen less and less information as time's gone by. But lo! There has been an update at the officlal site! Turns out the executive producer, Craig Zinkievich, <a href="http://sknr.net/2008/11/18/star-trek-online-interview/">did an interview with Skewed and Reviewed</a>.<br /><br />It makes for a decent overview if you're new to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, but there isn't much in the way of new gameplay information except for some specific revelations about visitable locales and playable races. First of all, he confirmed that Deep Space Nine -- the setting of the TV series of the same name -- will be in the game. He also rattled off a few of the playable races (but not all, and remember you can create your own): "Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion and several others." Trekkers / trekkies should be glad to hear that there will be no shortage of scantily clad green people or blue antennae.</div>

When you've just released an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king">expansion pack</a> that sold more copies than most major stand-alone releases, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/wows-lich-king-sells-record-2-8-million-copies-in-24-hours/">all in less than 24 hours</a>, you know you're sitting on a goldmine of a franchise. <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a>, of course, is aware of this, what with <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> getting a licensed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/world-of-warcraft-miniatures-game-launches/">miniature game</a> and a coming feature film adaptation.<br /><br />And speaking of the feature film adaptation, we have some elusive news about that. MTV's Multiplayer blog <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/11/20/world-of-warcraft-movie-update">had a chat with Blizzard's Frank Pearce</a> about the project. The scoop is that the studio, Legendary Pictures, is still looking for a screenwriter and director. Obviously, that means the movie is very early in development.<br /><br />MTV also asked Pearce if Blizzard's own world-renowned CGI animators would be involved in producing the special effects for the movie. Pearce said that the suggestion has "come up in discussions but it's not something we've really considered because it takes so long to generate just the brief amount of footage that we create for the game."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/wow-movie-still-needs-a-writer-blizzard-cgi-team-wont-be-invol/">WoW movie still needs a writer, Blizzard's CGI team won't be involved</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. GameTrailers put together <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/game/10434.html">a three-part series of <em>Warcraft</em> retrospective videos</a> in the days leading up to the launch of <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> expansion, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> was the focus of the third and final episode. In over 20 minutes, the video looks at the early MMOs and influences that led to the creation of <em>WoW</em>, the project's beginnings in discussions between <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> guys while they were playing <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, and of course, the game itself.<br /><br />In addition to listing the distinct features that made <em>WoW</em> successful, the restrospective provides an overview of its post-launch history, up through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-crusade"><em>The Burning Crusade</em></a>'s launch. Everything from Onyxia raids to the ever-changing PvP Honor system is covered. <div align="left">With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halloween">Halloween</a> now behind us, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thanksgiving">Thanksgiving</a> events are starting up. <a href="http://vanguard.station.sony.com"><em>Vanguard</em></a> appears to be the, well, vanguard here, as its Harvest Day event <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/newsArchive.vm?id=770&amp;month=current&amp;section=News">began yesterday</a>. Quest NPCs with four new quests have arrived in Khal -- the Halgrim family are recent immigrants who want to host a Harvest Festival, but Salrash the Birdmaster is determined to stop them because he finds the Halgrim's plan to have a feast on bird meat abhorrent.<br /><br />There are, in typical <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard"><em>Vanguard</em></a> fashion, raid four raid mobs that you can hunt down to celebrate: the aforementioned Salrash the Birdmaster, Turfin, Duksworth, and Ciran. Sounds like fun -- don't stuff yourself with phat loot and costumes <em>too</em> much!</div>

Everyone's got an expansion out right now -- <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/everquest-ii-the-shadow-odyssey-launches/"><em>The Shadow Odyssey</em></a>, <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/lord-of-the-rings-online-mines-of-moria-launches/"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a>, <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/midnight-heralds-the-lich-kings-wrath/"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a>, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/15/eves-quantum-rise-on-steam-at-reduced-price-21-day-trial/"><em>Quantum Rise</em></a> -- there's no end to it, but then that's the point, isn't it?<br /><br />Well, you'd think that, anyway. Word on the street is that there are already Death Knights at level 80, and all the raid content in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath</em></a> has been completed. One player reached level 80 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/and-the-first-world-of-warcraft-player-to-reach-level-80-is/">in only 27 hours</a>. Over a year of development for one week of content? Are MMO players just too damned hardcore, or did <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> aim too low? How much content should you be getting for $30 or $40 and your continued subscription, anyway?<br /><br />There are some folks out there who (to continue using <em>WoW</em> as an example) are still hacking through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-crusade"><em>The Burning Crusade</em></a>'s content, or even the classic stuff. How do you think a balance can be struck between those folks, and the crews who have already bested all the <em>Wrath</em> content?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/the-daily-grind-how-much-content-should-an-expansion-have/">The Daily Grind: How much content should an expansion have?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/11/18/lotro-likely-to-be-second-truly-successful-western-mmo-in-asia-says-steefel/">In an interview with videogaming247</a>, <a href="http://www.turbine.com">Turbine</a> bigwig <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeffrey-steefel">Jeffrey Steefel</a> said that he expects <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> to become the second viably successful western MMO in Asia (after <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>), should his team get the Chinese launch right. The two MMO-playing communities have historically had very different tastes, but Steefel believes western devs are finally figuring out how to break into the east. "That's where a big part of the global gaming market is and it's been that way for a long time," he said, "but we're only just now figuring how western games can begin to tap into that market.<br /><br />Steefel also noted -- as many of <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a>'s competitors have been keen to do -- that much of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>'s growth in recent months has been in Asia, not in America or Europe. Guess he's hoping to capture a little of that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> cross-cultural mojo when his game launches in China and Korea. We're aware Asia is a long way away for most of our readers, so for those of you who could care less: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/massivelys-exclusive-pre-launch-moria-interview-with-jeffrey-st/">check out our own interview with Steefel</a> for subjects a little closer to home. <a href="http://www.aventurine.gr/">Aventurine</a>'s <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/"><em>Darkfall</em></a> has been in development pretty much since the dawn of time (alright, since 2001, but that's not far from the dawn of time for the MMORPG genre), and we have on more than one occassion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/darkfall-summer-vapors-fanned-away/">wondered </a>whether or not those <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/darkfall-online-to-enter-beta-shows-off-in-game-videos/">promises of an eventual beta test</a> would be fulfilled. Turns out that for some, they have been.<br /><br />The developers have posted <a href="http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?p=1967927#post1967927">a large collection of quotes from beta players' feedback</a>. They claim it's representative, and it's mostly (but not all) positive. Sounds like players are impressed with the hugeness of the world and a solid crafting system, but a bit turned off by a complicated and unconventional control scheme. The devs say they're working on it.<br /><br />If you fall into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/darkfall"><em>Darkfall</em></a>'s hardcore <a href="http://www.uoherald.com"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>-esque PvP niche, feel free to scan through to see what you've apparently been missing out on for the past seven years.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/19/darkfall-beta-is-actually-happening-tester-feedback-proves-it/">Darkfall beta is actually happening, tester feedback proves it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. Turns out it's been pushed back -- kinda. The European launch will still commence on the 27th, but the North American closed beta will begin on that day, with the actual, final launch occurring sometime in January.<br /><br />Sure, we're a bit disappointed, but chances are we'll still get to play the game soon. <a href="http://www.acclaim.com/">Acclaim</a>, the game's publisher in the region, went out of its way in the press release it sent us to stress the "Freemium" business model -- a newbie trial area will be available to all players, who can reach level seven before they have to upgrade to a premium subscription at the usual $15/month rate. <br /><br />The idea of an unlimited free trial area with a level cap isn't fresh -- both <a href="http://www.meridian59.com"><em>Meridian 59</em></a> and <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> have done that, but it's not a bad way to sample a game to decide if you want to invest your hard-earned cash in it. <div align="left">Australia-based Eminence Symphony Orchestra (who performed pieces for the soundtrack of the console fighting game <em>Soul Calibur IV</em>) have recorded <a href="http://www.echoes-of-war.com/">a vast musical tome called <em>Echoes of War</em></a> that encompasses virtually every game <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> has made -- including <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. The international (Australia, United States, Japan) project is made partly out of the proverbial love of the game, but the folks behind it also want to get a young generation interested in classical music by playing "the music they want to hear."</div>
</div>
<br />The <a href="http://www.echoes-of-war.com/?media/sample-tracks">samples</a> on the website (which include two <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> tracks) are impressive, and should entice hardcore <em>Warcraft</em> fanatics to <a href="http://store.eminenceonline.com/">pick the full package up online</a>. There's a standard edition for $29.95 that just includes the 90 minutes of music, and the pictured-above "Legendary" edition (geez, even video game soundtracks have CEs now) which includes the music, a making-of DVD, a "32-page color booklet" (whatever that means), and nine bits of artwork on cards. That'll cost you $49.95.<br /><br />Sure, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/an-in-depth-look-at-the-aoc-soundtrack-album/">other MMOs</a> have gotten soundtrack albums, but we're pretty sure this is the first time we've seen a soundtrack for the entire catalog of an MMO developer other than <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/">Square-Enix</a>; <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy</em></a> fanatics proudly challenge even the <em>Warcraft</em> guys and gals in sheer enthusiasm.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5084025/composing-the-soundtrack-to-blizzards-world">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/australian-orchestra-records-tribute-to-world-of-warcraft/">Australian orchestra records tribute to WoW, Blizzard in general</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 15:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> is one of the most prestigious and succesful developers in the world for good reason -- it takes the best ideas from all over the industry (even ones that don't quite work right... yet) and refines them, forcing them to succeed in ways they never did before.<br /><br />Millions of people are playing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em>: <em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> today, so we decided this would be the perfect time to dive into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>'s mechanics and see what other games inspired <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> when it was creating this monumental phenomenon. We'll look at seven critical predecessors to which Blizzard paid homage with its own design decisions. Join us and learn a bit more about why <em>WoW</em> is the enthralling experience it is today.<br /><br />

<div align="left">Alright, boys and girls, you've had a day to play around with your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/death-knight">Death Knights</a>. Sure, it's a bit early to make any definitive judgments, but what are your first impressions? We've been hearing glowing (wink) <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/08/07/the-death-knight-starting-experience/">reviews of the Death Knight starting experience</a> from our colleagues, and we'd tell you what we think, but eh, we're too busy playing right now.<br /><br />For those of you who actually have to, y'know, work this morning -- that is to say, for whom work doesn't include include playing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> (you poor souls) -- go ahead and sneak in your impressions when your boss isn't looking. Unless you took a few personal days for the launch, in which case you're surely lost to the ice wastes for now, and we'll see you in a few days when you return for pizza and other supplies.</div>

<div align="left">It looks like <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> is headed for South Korea thanks to a distribution deal between <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> and well-known Korean publisher <a href="http://neowiz.com/kor/">Neowiz</a>. You thought you were safe from King Conan's wrath just 'cause you live 7,700 kilometers from Funcom? We could've told you that was a false assumption -- this particular blogger is almost 6,500km away and he's still knee-deep in the barbarism!<br /><br />We won't predict that it'll be more well-received there than <em>StarCraft</em>, but Korea is a bastion of online gaming, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neowiz">Neowiz</a> plans to offer full localization and support, as well as all the same content updates the US and EU players get, to the Korean audience. The release date "has not yet been finalized," though -- not even a hint was provided in the <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1323&amp;table=CONTENT">press release</a>, so, uhh, we guess we'll just wait and see.<hr />

It happened with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-crusade"><em>The Burning Crusade</em></a> -- players had spent months raiding at level 60 to get the very best gear, and when <em>TBC</em> came out, people were getting green drops with better stats than the best raid drops after only a couple of levels. A lot of hardcore players were annoyed, while some just accepted it as the natural motion of things.<br /><br />We've got at least three big expansions coming up in the next few weeks -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> for <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a> for <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-shadow-odyssey"><em>The Shadow Odyssey</em></a> for <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. With the level caps going up in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a>, we're expecting a similar situation to what we saw with <em>TBC</em>. How do you feel about this? Can it be avoided, should it? Maybe it's good to level the playing field now and then. Let us know!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/the-daily-grind-do-expansions-cheapen-all-that-hard-work/">The Daily Grind: Do expansions cheapen all that hard work?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST. <div align="left">With <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a> expansion slated to hit store shelves on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/mines-of-moria-gets-a-november-18th-release-date/">November 18th</a>, Turbine is taking extra measures to entice old players to come back with <a href="http://www.lotro.com/news/263-welcomeback">another Welcome Back Weekend</a>. This has been done a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/free-play-bonus-exp-weekend-welcomes-back-lapsed-lotro-players/">couple</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/lotro-announces-a-second-bonus-xp-weekend/">times</a> before, so you might know the drill, but in case you don't here goes!<br /><br />From tomorrow through November 17th, all former subscribers in good standing can play for free, no commitment required. During that period, everyone -- former subscribers and current -- will receive 25% extra experience from monsters, which will stack with rested XP. These are pretty simple incentives, but if they're enough to bring you in, you can download either the <a href="http://download.lotro.level3.turbine.com/largecontent/lotro/book14/downloader/live/standardres/LOTRO-US-Book14-Downloader-StandardRes.exe">standard</a> or <a href="http://download.lotro.level3.turbine.com/largecontent/lotro/book14/downloader/live/highres/LOTRO-US-Book14-Downloader-HighRes.exe">high-resolution</a> client and get started tomorrow.<br /><br /><strong>EDIT: We read wrong! While the XP gains push through the 17th, the free play period only lasts through the 10th. Thanks, Bissrok.</strong></div>

Thieves in the United Kingdom city of Bradford stole 4,000 retail copies of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> from the back of a truck late at night on Tuesday the 28th of October. The original source, <a href="http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/3817640.4_000_Xbox_games_stolen_from_lorry/">Telegraph &amp; Argus</a>, claims that it was an Xbox 360 version of the game, but we're going to keep our sanity caps on and presume that was an error. <br /><br />Police are trying to track down the thieves, but we're thinking it ought to be pretty easy to find them if they actually try to play the game themselves, seeing as how they'll need to register with a credit card number and other personal information to do so. We're guessing the thieves didn't realize that when they stole the boxes, eh? No good can come of this for anyone!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=201030">CVG</a>]<hr />

<div align="left">You may have noticed that the lightsabers in <a href="http://swtor.bioware.com"><em>Star Wars</em>: <em>The Old Republic</em></a> are disproportionately large. A vocal minority of fans are crying bloody murder about this, and <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> is not unaware of that fact. At a company Halloween party, it would appear that they made a self-deprecating joke of it, with at least one employee showing up with an outrageously huge lightsaber, then staging a recreation of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/1111062/">screenshot</a> that raised all those eyebrows.<br /><br />The image <a href="http://kotaku.com/5075263/biowares-halloweeners-mock-their-own-giant-lightsabers">was leaked to gaming blog Kotaku</a>, and here it is. BioWare seems to believe it's good to have a sense of humor about yourself, and we agree!<br /></div>

Above is the sole bit of evidence that the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> movie has seen any completed work at all -- one item of concept art. We know very little about the film, and the only news we've gotten recently is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/uwe-boll-wont-be-making-a-world-of-warcraft-film/">Uwe Boll will not be directing</a> it (admittedly that's very good news). Joystiq blogger <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/kevin-kelly">Kevin Kelly</a> is perfectly fine with that, as he wrote a <a href="http://blog.spout.com/2008/10/31/world-of-warcraft-movie-shouldnt-happen/">blog entry over at Spout</a> about why this movie really oughtn't ever get made at all.<br /><br />Three reasons were provided: <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190374/"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons</em></a> was a disaster, it couldn't earn back its huge budget even if every <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> player in the world went to see it, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/world-of-warcrafts-expansion-lore-needs-addendums-to-understand/">not even most <em>WoW</em> players</a> know what the story of the game really is. There was a fourth reason, too, but it isn't so much a reason as why it shouldn't be made as why it won't be -- the concept art is all we have after two years.<br /><br />It's true that the movie couldn't make it on <em>WoW</em> players alone; it'd have to be appealing to people unfamiliar with the franchise, too. But we really doubt that's going to happen, and it doesn't matter anyway because, as we said, it probably will never get made!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/10/31/why-they-shouldnt-make-the-warcraft-movie/">WoW Insider</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/since-the-wow-movie-probably-wont-happen-anyway-heres-why-it/">Since the WoW movie probably won't happen anyway, here's why it shouldn't</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 20:00:00 EST. The biggest selling point of <a href="http://swtor.bioware.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> seems to be its focus on storytelling. Interactive stories have always been <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a>'s particular claim to fame, so we're not surprised at the focus, but we will admit to being a little surprised at just how hardcore they are about it. In an <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3835/a_new_galaxy_daniel_erickson_on_.php?page=4">interview with Gamasutra</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> Austin lead writer Daniel Erickson described the company's process for hiring and managing the writing staff, which includes more than a dozen people who went through a three-month training program, and who have now been working on the game for several years.<br /><br />What's interesting to us about the interview (most of it focuses on professional questions, not on gameplay -- check out the info from our own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/the-old-republic-unveiled-classed-based-storytelling-and-tales/">encounter with Erickson</a> for more on that) is that unlike with other MMOs, the development process began with writing. The stories created by the writers are the foundation of the game design and experience to come -- at least according to Erickson.<br /><br />There's also a bit in there about the challenges of innovation in the MMO industry, and the need to make individual game features -- such as combat or story -- as solid as they are in single-player titles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/swtors-lead-writer-describes-biowares--ambitious/">SWTOR's lead writer describes BioWare's ambitious storytelling initiative</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.ea.com">EA</a> released its <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ERTS/452841195x0x245319/f0a58760-2c38-408f-8779-2782cf681255/Q209%20ER_10.30_10am.pdf">quarterly financial statements</a> (PDF warning on both that and the Source link) yesterday, and while the typical MMO player will not care about most of the data present, we thought a couple things buried in there were worth mentioning. First of all, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA</a> bragged about the previously-revealed 800,000 subscriber number for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em>.</a> <em>Madden NFL 09</em> and <em>Spore</em> also did quite well, but despite those successes, the company still posted a net loss of $310 million.<br /><br />Possibly as a result, it announced a "cost reduction plan" (doublespeak, anyone?) "which will include the elimination of approximately 6% of the Company's workforce," which Scott Jennings <a href="http://brokentoys.org/2008/10/30/ea-announces-lots-of-sales-layoffs/">suggests</a> is around 540 people. No details were given about which teams would lose people. We suppose new intellectual properties like <em>Dead Space</em> and <em>Mirror's Edge</em> aren't cheap to develop, and neither is <a href="http://swtor.bioware.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> (the existence of which was proudly touted in the report), but it's striking that even amidst sales success by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> and other titles, the company is still shedding employees.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://brokentoys.org/">Broken Toys</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/ea-financial-report-war-did-great-layoffs-happening-anyway/">EA financial report: WAR did great, layoffs happening anyway</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 09:00:00 EST. They're expensive and they're usually mostly useless, but they sure are popular anyway! Collector's Editions are a given for any major game release these days, and MMOs are no exception -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/unboxing-the-age-of-conan-collectors-edition/"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/20/unboxing-the-collectors-edition-of-warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> both had 'em, and even expansion packs get 'em in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/wrath-of-the-lich-king-collectors-edition-details-announced/"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a>'s case.<br /><br />Sometimes they just come with fancy boxes and art work or soundtrack CDs, while other times they come with in-game bonuses like free mounts. Sometimes they even let you play the game earlier. But they're awfully pricey -- what do you think, are they worth it? Have you bought Collector's Editions before, or do you plan to? Or are you perfectly happy forgoing the frills and just getting the basic box?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/the-daily-grind-do-you-buy-collectors-editions/">The Daily Grind: Do you buy Collector's Editions?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 08:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.mindfusegames.com">MindFuse Games</a>, which a couple of weeks ago announced it had raised $1 million in funding for a Victorian-themed MMO, sent out a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/gatheryn--advanced-casual-world--with-a-victorian-style-setting">press release</a> yesterday officially announcing and providing details about the game, which is called<em> <a href="http://www.mindfusegames.com">The World of Gatheryn</a></em>. <em>Gatheryn</em> is not merely Victorian, as we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/mindfuse-gets-1m-in-funding-for-a-victorian-mmo/">originally reported</a> -- there are steampunk elements too.<br /><br />The focus seems casual, although the graphics are quite strapping for an independent game. MindFuse promises character customization, apartments, and puzzles, while specifically singling out violent conflict as a no-go. It seems to be a mostly laid back, friendly, social affair, but aimed at grown ups rather than pre-teens, in contrast to a lot of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/maplestory">other casual titles</a>.<br /><br />When we say the game has been pseudo-dated, it's a bit of a stretch: the press release says it'll be released in 2009. When in 2009? Your guess is as good as ours, but we'll bet it's not soon.</div>

There have been many arguments in the Massively offices -- some bordering on heated (hey, we're passionate people, alright?) -- about today's question. We don't all agree. Some think it's definite, some think it's definitely<em> not</em>, and some folks are on the fence, but here goes: will <a href="http://swtor.bioware.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> surpass <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> by any measure of success -- particularly in subscriber numbers?<br /><br />Sure, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/will-swtor-be-bigger-than-wow-lucasarts-thinks-so/">reps from LucasArts and EA said so</a>, but they kind of have to, right? We'd love to hear your opinions, but here are a couple points that have been brought up: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> opened the door for new MMOs -- people are comfortable with them now. Doesn't that mean the chances are ripe for a huge, established franchise like <em>Star Wars</em> to sweep in and take it to the next level? On the other hand, since <em>Knights of the Old Republic</em> and <em>Mass Effect</em> sold substantially fewer copies than <em>WoW</em>, does the <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a> / <em>KotOR</em> pedigree really matter for this question?<br /><br /><em>Star Wars</em> is neither a star nor a war -- <em>discuss</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/the-daily-grind-will-the-old-republic-beat-world-of-warcraft/">The Daily Grind: Will The Old Republic beat World of Warcraft?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 08:00:00 EST.
