Happy birthday, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>! It's your party, and you can cry if you want to! And if you don't, then I will, because the Northeast and I are recovering from another flapping snowstorm! I swear to Pete, I need <a href="http://tinyurl.com/4kzhfxu">a mysterious British doctor</a> to show up in a time-traveling phone booth and whisk me ahead to June.<br />
<br />
So <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> spacefaring MMO is one year old! That means <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> is walking more, pooping less often, and not keeping you up all night with its bawling. That also means a lot has happened since <em>STO</em> went live 366 or so days ago. (Yeah, the actual anniversary was yesterday.) It's time to celebrate and lament the first full year of <em>STO's</em> lifespan.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/captains-log-one-year-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: One year of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/captains-log-one-year-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: One year of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, the greatest weekly column about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> that you'll read on Massively today. I can't believe this, but there's a fairly solid chance that I'm digging myself out of another blizzard at this very moment, so I hope you're having fun reading this instead of freezing to death, shovel in hand. Winter is getting on my nerves.<br />
<br />
Next week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> will celebrate its one-year anniversary, and Captain's Log will celebrate with a half-amazed look back at 12 months of Federation funsauce and Klingon, er... hm. Anyway, we'll look ahead this week to <em>STO's</em> future -- both the future we expect, and the future <em>STO</em> needs to ensure it reaches its second, fifth and tenth anniversaries.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/captains-log-facing-the-future-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Facing the future of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/captains-log-facing-the-future-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Facing the future of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 11:00:00 EST. Hey, everybody. I did four things this weekend: I saw <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/true-grit-2010/">True Grit</a>, I saw <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/green_hornet/">The Green Hornet</a>, I tried kumquats for the first time and I went on a blind date with a dyspeptic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo">wendigo</a>. I recommend doing only one of those things.<br />
<br />
In other news, it's time for another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. We covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/captains-log-foundry-friendly-resources-and-tips/">some helpful resources</a> for creating missions with <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/captains-log-spending-time-with-the-foundry-beta/">Foundry</a> last week, even as the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> tossed out a whole slew of new information. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Dan Stahl</a> and company meted out an update to the feature-episode calendar, a new Engineering Report and the latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ask-cryptic/">Ask Cryptic</a>. So, what'd we learn?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/captains-log-newstime-grab-bag/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Newstime grab bag</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/captains-log-newstime-grab-bag/">Captain's Log: Newstime grab bag</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. Greetings, readers, and welcome to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. I'm sure many of you live in sunnier climes and don't know such joys, but by the time you're reading this, I should be dealing with the aftermath of <a href="http://tinyurl.com/4a949az">yet another darn snow day</a>. I hope it warms your hearts that as you all sit there relaxing, I'm likely outside shoveling snow for what feels like the 17th time this winter.<br />
<br />
After last week's look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/massivelys-2010-players-choice-awards/">Massively's readers poll</a>, which named <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/captains-log-sto-was-the-best-mmo-of-2010/">best MMO of 2010</a>, your friendly neighborhood Cap's Log focuses this week on how to use the Foundry, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/captains-log-spending-time-with-the-foundry-beta/">user-generated-content tools</a>. I'll point out some handy online resources that explain the fundamentals of using the Foundry and then offer my thoughts on something even more vital to a successful mission: storytelling.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/captains-log-foundry-friendly-resources-and-tips/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Foundry-friendly resources and tips</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/captains-log-foundry-friendly-resources-and-tips/">Captain's Log: Foundry-friendly resources and tips</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. Happy new year, everybody! By now, we've all gotten over our post-party, um, grogginess (children might be reading) and trudged back to work. I'm still on cloud nine after a <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/tag/_/name/2010-sun-bowl-analysis">stellar Sun Bowl</a> for <a href="http://www.nd.edu/">my alma mater</a>, but the time has come to look to the stars for another <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>.<br />
<br />
This week's edition, tortured metaphors and all, offers up a bit of a grab bag -- which has nothing <em>at all</em> to do with the fact that my day job is frantically hectic this week. We'll check out <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> strong showing in Massively's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/massivelys-2010-players-choice-awards/">year-end readers' poll</a>, fiddle with <a href="http://tinyurl.com/2b7qvfj">a ship-building contest</a>, and maybe whine a little about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/captains-log-spending-time-with-the-foundry-beta/">the Foundry</a>. So, fun!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/captains-log-sto-was-the-best-mmo-of-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: STO was the best MMO of 2010?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/captains-log-sto-was-the-best-mmo-of-2010/">Captain's Log: STO was the best MMO of 2010?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. Welcome back, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Capsloggers</a>! (Note: professional nicknamer here, available for all your mascot-imagining, brand-revamping needs.) I hope you've all had a merry merry and a happy happy so far. And if you haven't, then keep it to yourself, because Massively is no place to be sad.<br />
<br />
Now the calendar's just one page, and of course I am excited. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and the end of the year means end-of-the-year lists! As we all know, 2010 has been a big year for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, from its release in February to the introduction of Season 3 just this month. Skip away with me down the Memory Brick Road as we recall the biggest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> stories of the year!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/captains-log-star-trek-onlines-year-in-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's year in review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/captains-log-star-trek-onlines-year-in-review/">Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's year in review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, loyal readers! (Disloyal readers and the illiterate are also welcome.) I hope you've been enjoying <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/12-days-of-giveaways">the ramp-up to Christmas</a> without losing any limbs to last-minute shopping. I ordered everything from the comfort of Amazon this year, though a small, self-destructive part of me misses the Mad-Maxian insanity of the mall right around now. <br />
<br />
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, or at least a day off from work, and most of you probably aren't primed for a deep discussion of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> future or an in-depth examination of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-3/">Season 3</a>. Instead, let's play with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">the Foundry</a> and maybe have a little fun as I try to craft my first actual mission.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/captains-log-creating-my-first-mission-in-the-foundry/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Creating my first mission in the Foundry</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/captains-log-creating-my-first-mission-in-the-foundry/">Captain's Log: Creating my first mission in the Foundry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 12:00:00 EST. As Deathwing <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com/category/cataclysm/">rages through Azeroth</a> and the inhabitants of other worlds look forward to <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/12-days-of-giveaways">gift-filled holiday events</a>, members of the Federation and the Klingon Defense Force saw <a href="http://goo.gl/f3Tmu">Christmahanukwanzakah</a> arrive early in the form of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-3/">Season 3</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> third mega-patch brought <a href="http://tinyurl.com/32terhf">a fine array of features</a>, including Borg ship pieces and replayable missions, to live servers last Thursday. But <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">the biggest feature</a> (and possibly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> best) landed on the Tribble test server instead. So let's take a trip to Beta Land and get to know the Foundry a little better by playing a few user-made missions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/captains-log-spending-time-with-the-foundry-beta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Spending time with the Foundry beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/captains-log-spending-time-with-the-foundry-beta/">Captain's Log: Spending time with the Foundry beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Big-time release news this week, folks! Have you prepared for the biggest, best expansion of game content this side of the Laurentian System? I hope you've battened down the hatches, called in sick and stocked up on frozen pizza, because at long last, the moment we've waited for has arrived.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://tinyurl.com/32terhf">Season 3: Genesis</a> goes live today, and the universe will never be the same. New missions, new loot, a new look and -- I'm sorry, say again? What's a Deathwing? Yeah, you must be thinking of <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com/category/cataclysm/">something else</a>. <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a> is all over <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> latest super-patch, which introduces -- or comes close to introducing -- some seriously welcome changes to the whole of known space.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Pros and cons of Season 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-3/">Captain's Log: Pros and cons of Season 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. Welcome back from the holiday, readers! I trust everyone has recovered from the excitement of a long weekend, a tasty Thanksgiving and a rabid Black Friday. By now you should have settled back into the slow, miserable slog toward more holidays. I know I have.<br />
<br />
For this week's <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, I'm going to discuss themepark and sandbox MMOs. What do those terms mean? And how does <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> fit into that dichotomy, both in its present form and in its Foundry-expanded future?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/captains-log-will-sto-become-a-sandbox-or-remain-a-themepark/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Will STO become a sandbox or remain a themepark?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/captains-log-will-sto-become-a-sandbox-or-remain-a-themepark/">Captain's Log: Will STO become a sandbox or remain a themepark?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 15:00:00 EST. Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, everyone's (well, mostly my) favorite column about <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online</a></em>. Guess what? It's Thursday, which means Thanksgiving is upon us -- assuming you're in the U.S., in which case I hope you already knew that. At any rate, in the spirit of the holiday, we're going buffet-style this week, talking about a little of this and a little of that. But don't worry; most of you are probably slipping into a food coma already, so I'll keep things light, mostly. <br />
<br />
For an appetizer, we'll nibble on <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> little preview of <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">Season 3</a>. For a nice second course, I'll revisit <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/">my opinion</a> on <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/star-trek-online/">STO's</a></em> treatment of Star Trek canon. And for dessert, I'll suggest some Black Friday shopping on <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/store">the C-Store</a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/25/captains-log-supplemental-on-stos-treatment-of-canon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Supplemental on STO's treatment of canon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/25/captains-log-supplemental-on-stos-treatment-of-canon/">Captain's Log: Supplemental on STO's treatment of canon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Space can be a dangerous place, as villains and ne'er-do-wells lurk in every corner. Last time, the Breen <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/captains-log-weekly-episodes-finally-begin-with-a-bang/">invaded the Defera system</a>. Now, the Devidians seek to destroy an entire sector. <br />
<br />
I'm talking, of course, about <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online's</a></em> weekly episodes. <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/feature_episodes">The second series</a> wrapped up on Saturday, and because it should be the last major bit of content we get from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">Season 3</a>, I thought we might check out a play-through of all five episodes. Does <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/">STO's</a></em> second set of feature episodes live up to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/30/captains-log-wrapping-up-stos-first-series-of-weekly-episodes/">the fun of the first</a>? Actually, the Devidians blow the Breen out of the water!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/captains-log-wrapping-up-stos-second-series-of-feature-episod/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Wrapping up STO's second series of feature episodes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/captains-log-wrapping-up-stos-second-series-of-feature-episod/">Captain's Log: Wrapping up STO's second series of feature episodes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. Guess who's nine months old? Think <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirt_%28character%29">red shirts</a>, <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Warp_coil">warp coils</a> and <a href="http://tinyurl.com/2asre2q">forehead ridges</a>. <br />
That's right! <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is celebrating a birthday this week. (OK, it actually happened last week, but who's counting? You there -- stop counting!) We here at Massively like to check in on our games <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/">every few months</a> to reminisce about the past, recap the present and ruminate on the future. Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, everybody. I hope y'all enjoyed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/this-is-halloween-2010/">the weekend's festivities</a>, both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/captains-log-guide-to-surviving-without-halloween/">in-game</a> and real-world. I've only just woken up from my sugar coma to discover a bright new November Thursday, so I guess it's <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> time!<br />
<br />
The folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> dropped a big ol' bomb last week. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/champions-online-going-f2p/">A free-to-play bomb</a>! Sometime soon, <a href="http://champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> -- y'know, Cryptic's other MMO, the one about superheroes -- will adopt a fabulously free-ish payment model. What does that mean for the future of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>? Let's speculate!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/captains-log-a-glimpse-of-cryptics-free-to-play-philosophy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: A glimpse of Cryptic's free-to-play philosophy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/captains-log-a-glimpse-of-cryptics-free-to-play-philosophy/">Captain's Log: A glimpse of Cryptic's free-to-play philosophy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. Oh boy! My favorite time of year is here again! A time when ghouls and goblins rule the night, I can watch <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monster_Squad">The Monster Squad</a> three times a week without feeling silly and no one has a problem with my wearing leopard-print tights to a party. Yes sir, I love me some Halloween. And like most awesomely major holidays, my MMOs usually help me celebrate in style. <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kargath&amp;cn=Gilsloserelf">My paladin</a>, for instance, finally snagged himself a set of <a href="http://www.wowhead.com/item=37012">Horseman's Reins</a> this year. Sadly, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> offers no such holiday merriment. So what's a forlorn fan of costume parties and pumpkin patches to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>? Fresh from the brain trust behind your beloved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, consider these alternatives to tide you over until you go trick-or-treating.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/captains-log-guide-to-surviving-without-halloween/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Guide to surviving (without) Halloween</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/captains-log-guide-to-surviving-without-halloween/">Captain's Log: Guide to surviving (without) Halloween</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">The Star Trek universe caters to a whole lot of different interests. You've got your basic sci-fi fan, who enjoys the shows and movies but doesn't get super into them. You've also got your movie buffs, who perk up for showings of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_II:_The_Wrath_of_Khan">Wrath of Khan</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_Nemesis">Nemesis</a> (<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_nemesis/">ha!</a>). Futurists marvel at <a href="http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/10-star-trek-technologies.htm">the prophetic nature</a> of old-school Trek tech, and casual fans used to flip on the boob tube to scope out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_of_Nine">Seven of Nine's</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G84U8-1A-dg">ram scoops</a>.</div>
<br />
And of course, Star Trek has its die-hard fans, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trekkie">the Trekkers</a>. (What's wrong with calling them "Trekkies," again?) I noticed a handful at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nycc-2010/">New York Comic Con</a>, traipsing about in their uniforms, snapping group pictures, scanning the <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/en/NYAF/">Anime Festival</a> next door for signs of intelligent life. And that got me to thinking about socializing in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Why is it often so lonely in space?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/captains-log-socializing-and-the-quiet-of-space-in-sto/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Socializing and the quiet of space in STO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/captains-log-socializing-and-the-quiet-of-space-in-sto/">Captain's Log: Socializing and the quiet of space in STO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. Hey there, folks! Welcome back to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, Massively's rarely-coherent-but-always-fun look at <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online</a>. I have had just the <em>busiest</em> darn week, you betcha. I spent all weekend at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>, where I saw more than a few folks dressed to the nines in Star Trek gear, and then I started a shiny new day job on Monday. Phew!<br />
<br />
I've been thinking a lot about user-generated content lately. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dan-stahl-talks-about-star-trek-onlines-user-generated-content/">a recent interview</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> offers a few details on the subject, in which we learn a bit about the forthcoming system's abilities and limitations. What do we know about <em>STO's</em> UGC tools? What do we still not know -- mainly, when can we get in there and start crafting our own missions? Why, follow me past the jump to find out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Anticipating STO's future in user-generated content</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">Captain's Log: Anticipating STO's future in user-generated content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> was all over <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>. The folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> presented a playable demo on the show floor, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event-page-1/">an info-laden panel</a> highlighting character creation and a super-exclusive fan event with 500 of <em>DCUO's</em> biggest fans. Before the fan event got popping, Massively enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with comics legend <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a> and <em>DCUO</em> Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a>. <br />
<br />
Lee, co-publisher of DC Comics and executive creative director of <em>DCUO</em>, and Anderson shared some special insights into the game's development. Conversation ranged from <em>DCUO's</em> similarity to <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> to Lee's introduction to the MMO genre.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/">NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. The gods of <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> smiled upon Detective Comics fans and MMO junkies alike this weekend, as <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> kicked butt and took questions at not one, but a senses-shattering <em>two</em> Q&amp;A sessions on Saturday. Conventioneers enjoyed a glimpse into the character-creation process at the "Creating the Next Legend Panel," and then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> invited fans to a special Q&amp;A event afterward. And I would not be exaggerating if I said the audience reaction was riotously positive.<br />
<br />
Executive Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a>, Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chris-Cao/">Chris Cao</a> and Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a> shared details and fielded dozens of questions about the DC-based MMO at both events. Discussion ranged from costume creation to endgame content to the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/dc-universe-online-delayed-until-early-2011/">recent delay to early 2011</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/">NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion's</em></a> recent expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/assault-on-balaurea"><em>Assault on Balaurea</em></a>, ushered in a host of welcome changes, ranging from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/aion-assault-on-balaurea-zone-trailer-gelkmaros/">new zones</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/30/one-shots-these-pets-are-a-scream/">frightfully cute pets</a>. Rifting, on the other hand, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/wings-over-atreia-to-rift-or-not-to-rift-that-is-the-question/">suffered tremendously</a>. But the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> want <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion</em></a> players to know their cries have not fallen on deaf ears.<br />
<br />
In a nutshell, rifts are portals that randomly open between the homelands of the Asmodians and the Elyos, allowing members of each faction to venture into the other's territory for some PvP action. The original system allowed higher level players to pop into lower level enemy zones and gank the heck out of people. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/aion-1-9-patch-highlights-with-producer-chris-hager/">Patch 1.9</a> introduced some restrictions to prevent ganking, but <em>Balaurea</em> just about broke the system by debuffing rifters into oblivion. <br />
<br />
The developers know players are upset -- and they have a plan.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/ncsoft-to-probe-aion-players-thoughts-on-rifting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft to probe Aion players' thoughts on rifting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/ncsoft-to-probe-aion-players-thoughts-on-rifting/">NCsoft to probe Aion players' thoughts on rifting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST. The future of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> comes up a lot in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. Whether imagining <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/captains-log-five-features-sto-should-borrow-from-other-mmos/">cool new features</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/captains-log-starship-interiors-and-hints-of-the-future/">picking apart comments</a> by Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, I ponder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> tomorrows fairly frequently. <br />
<br />
But, hey, it's not my fault the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> talk about the game's near and far future so much, right? Especially with their monthly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ask-cryptic/">Ask Cryptic</a> feature, the developers address the game's, er, development all the time. This month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/02/cryptic-answers-the-29-most-pressing-sto-questions/">extra-hefty Ask Cryptic</a> offers players a lot of tasty food for thought -- but a forum post I missed last week has given me indigestion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/captains-log-ask-cryptic-raises-questions-about-stos-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Ask Cryptic raises questions about STO's future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/captains-log-ask-cryptic-raises-questions-about-stos-future/">Captain's Log: Ask Cryptic raises questions about STO's future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST. Welcome back to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your weekly dose of -- y'know what, could you guys hang on for a bit? <a href="http://www.fox.com/glee/">Glee</a> is on as I write this. <a href="http://www.judiciaryreport.com/images/britney-crazy-8.jpg">Britney</a> can take a flying leap, but <a href="http://nimg.sulekha.com/entertainment/original700/jayma-mays-john-stamos-2010-9-8-1-41-39.jpg">John Stamos</a> is somethin' else, amirite?<br />
<br />
Ahem. So anyway, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> very first series of weekly episodes wrapped up this past Saturday. We covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/captains-log-weekly-episodes-finally-begin-with-a-bang/">the introduction of weekly episodes</a> a few weeks ago, and I promised we'd get back to them in due time. So did <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Breen">the Breen</a> win? What can we expect from <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/feature_episodes">the next series of episodes</a>? And are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> weekly episodes all they're cracked up to be?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/30/captains-log-wrapping-up-stos-first-series-of-weekly-episodes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Wrapping up STO's first series of weekly episodes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/30/captains-log-wrapping-up-stos-first-series-of-weekly-episodes/">Captain's Log: Wrapping up STO's first series of weekly episodes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 17:00:00 EST. Newsflash! This just in: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> has endured a turbulent life so far. You had no idea, right? Except for the part where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a> has discussed that very topic for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/">the past</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/captains-log-five-features-sto-should-borrow-from-other-mmos/">two weeks</a> -- and who here doesn't hang on my <em>every</em> word? (Don't answer that.)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> rocky road also features prominently in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/star-trek-online-rethinks-microtransactions-in-the-latest-state/">the latest state of the game letter</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a>. Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> offers some visions for the future of the game and drops some hints of what to expect in coming updates. He also comes <em>this close</em> to sharing frank information about <em>STO's</em> performance. So what does Stahl's vaguenesses imply, and what does Cryptic have in store for <em>STO</em>?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/captains-log-is-the-state-of-the-game-good-bad-or-ugly/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Is the state of the game good, bad or ugly?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/captains-log-is-the-state-of-the-game-good-bad-or-ugly/">Captain's Log: Is the state of the game good, bad or ugly?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Hi, everybody! (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Riviera">Hi, Dr. Nick!</a>) Thanks for tuning in to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, where we laud and lament the finer points of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> each and every Thursday. Last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/">sure was fun</a>, wasn't it? Nothing gets the comments pumping like defending the work of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a>, amirite?<br />
<br />
This week, I feel like having a little more fun. These are exciting times for MMO-lovers, and I admit my eye -- and my playing time -- have gone a-wanderin' of late. So I got to thinking this week about which features from other MMOs I would most like to see implemented in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>. Keep reading, because I'm going to tell them to you! And then I'm going to demand that you suggest your own features in the comments!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/captains-log-five-features-sto-should-borrow-from-other-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Five features STO should "borrow" from other MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/captains-log-five-features-sto-should-borrow-from-other-mmos/">Captain's Log: Five features STO should "borrow" from other MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 16:00:00 EST. </em></div>
<a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is terrible. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">Ground</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/captains-log-nine-more-tips-for-ground-combat/">combat</a> is tedious and messy. Space combat is repetitive. Missions are boring. The game engine is clunky and cartoony. The developers at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> are smelly doo-doo-heads. In short: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> is the worst.<br />
<br />
Or so people would have you believe. In its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/">seven or so months of life</a>, <em>STO</em> has attracted an impressive collection of detractors, naysayers and Debbie Downers. For this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, let's discuss the phenomenon of anti-<em>STO</em> fervor. We've touched on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/">certain aspects of it before</a>, but the time has come to examine what I think is the biggest claim by those who really loathe <em>STO</em>.<br />
<br />
Does <em>STO</em> really betray the spirit of Star Trek? Read on as we play a little point-counterpoint, then feel free to add your two cents in the comments.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Did Cryptic betray the spirit of Star Trek?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/">Captain's Log: Did Cryptic betray the spirit of Star Trek?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. Well, well, well. If it isn't our new friend, Mr. Weekly Episode. You sure took your sweet time getting here. What happened, you get stuck in traffic on the intergalactic turnpike or something? This is why you don't warp anywhere near Bajor during rush hour. <br />

Hiya, readers! Pull up a barstool and get comfy. This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your Thursday fix of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> news and views, is all about minigames. With the recent release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/">Season 2: Ancient Enemies</a>, the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> introduced a pair of minigames to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>, and they say they have more in the works. I thought it might be fun to check out the new diversions and maybe suggest a few of our own for future updates.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/captains-log-say-hello-to-my-minigames/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Say hello to my minigames</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/captains-log-say-hello-to-my-minigames/">Captain's Log: Say hello to my minigames</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. Oh, hi there, readers! You'll have to excuse me; I was just enjoying a little quiet time in my quarters. My starship quarters. Inside my starship. Because I have those now.<br />
<br />
Yes, among many other features, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/">Season 2: Ancient Enemies</a> introduced starship interiors to <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Continuing from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/captains-log-impressions-of-diplomacy-in-star-trek-online/">last week's discussion of diplomacy</a>, one of Season 2's other big additions, I thought we'd spend this edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a> examining ship interiors. Plus, we'll take a special side trip into the future to consider what else <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> fans can look forward to -- in the future!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/captains-log-starship-interiors-and-hints-of-the-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Starship interiors and hints of the future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/captains-log-starship-interiors-and-hints-of-the-future/">Captain's Log: Starship interiors and hints of the future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. Peace be with you, readers. Today, we convene once again for a new edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, in which we discuss, with mutual respect for all opinions, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Begging your pardon if you disagree, but I thought it appropriate that we explore one of the game's brand-new features: diplomacy.<br />
<br />
With the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/">Season 2: Ancient Enemies</a>, Treksters and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> fans the world over may breathe a sigh of relief. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> finally introduced a dedicated system for being <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/make-love-not-war-stos-craig-zinkievich-shows-off-the-federati/">all peaceable and stuff</a>, like on the teevee. So how does this diplomacy business work, and is it any good? Read on to find out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/captains-log-impressions-of-diplomacy-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Impressions of diplomacy in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/captains-log-impressions-of-diplomacy-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Impressions of diplomacy in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. Hail and well met, fellow travelers! Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your weekly helping of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> infopiniontainment. The past few weeks have been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/">a little crazy around here</a>, between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/">the C-Store kerfuffle</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/">the game's six-month anniversary</a>. Oh, and did I mention Season 2 went live?<br />
<br />
Yep, the corking chaps at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> latest super-patch on July 27, introducing <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/season_two">a bevy of new content</a>. Now that most players have had a chance to sink their teeth into Season 2: Ancient Enemies, I thought we'd discuss some of the major new features, as we did <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-one/">when Season 1 hit the scene</a> four months ago.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Pros and cons of Season 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/">Captain's Log: Pros and cons of Season 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. Grab a party hat and some confetti, because it's time for an extra-special edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. This week, we put aside <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/">recent</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/">tribble-ations</a> in favor of some celebration: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is six months old!<br />
<br />
Can you believe <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> went live <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/02/massivelys-star-trek-online-launch-day-roundup/">half a year ago</a>? This Monday marks the big anniversary, and it sure has been a bumpy ride getting here. Awash in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/preview-made-available-for-star-trek-onlines-season-2/">new content</a>, and occasionally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/star-trek-online-adds-more-c-store-options-and-controversy/">mired in controversy</a>, <em>STO</em> is older and wiser now. So let's scoop up the sands of time with our beach pail of reminiscence, as we fondly recall the past six months of <em>STO</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Six months of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Six months of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. Geez louise! It's time for another installment of your favorite Thursday <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> column, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. Despite <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/07/15/warmest.june/index.html">the lovely weather</a>, <a href="http://io9.com/5497430/before-the-movie-witness-scott-pilgrims-finest-hour">the final volume of awesome</a>, <a href="http://inceptionmovie.warnerbros.com/">that crazy-good movie</a> and <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/20/animal-cruelty-parasailing-donkey-russia">a parasailing donkey</a>, everyone seems to (still) be talking about one thing: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/store">the C-Store</a>!<br />
<br />
In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/">last week's Captain's Log</a>, we glanced at micro-transactions in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> on our way to discussing the game's future in an increasingly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-to-play/">freemium</a> world. Readers had plenty of comments to share ... and that was before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> dropped a hydrogen bomb in the form of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/star-trek-online-adds-more-c-store-options-and-controversy/">new per-character services</a>. Players erupted late last week, and the flames are still burning in <a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=168210">a forum thread more than 115 pages long</a>.<br />
<br />
I would be remiss to gloss over the controversy, so let's examine why folks are so upset at Cryptic this time. It's not as if much else is happening in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/preview-made-available-for-star-trek-onlines-season-2/">pre-patch lull</a>, amirite?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Per-character C-Store services ruin everything ever</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/">Captain's Log: Per-character C-Store services ruin everything ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 16:00:00 EST. <em>Vroom vroom!</em> I want to tell you to warm up your engines and place your hands at 10 and 2, because <a href="http://world.needforspeed.com/"><em>Need For Speed World</em></a> is just about ready to burn some asphalt and squeal some rubber. Too bad I couldn't car-metaphor my way out of a wet paper bag. But I <em>can</em> tell you this: EA's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-to-play/">free-to-play</a> racing MMO is awesome fun. And it's almost here.<br />
<br />
I sat down Wednesday with Adam King, EA product manager, and a copy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/need-for-speed-world"><em>NFSW</em></a>, which opens July 20 with a pre-order head start before going fully live July 27. King gave me a chance to look under the engine, punch the tires and take the game for a twirl -- car metaphors, agh! -- so follow me past the jump for my impressions of the game, plus some hints about what to expect in the first major content update.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/behind-the-wheel-with-need-for-speed-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the wheel with Need For Speed World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/behind-the-wheel-with-need-for-speed-world/">Behind the wheel with Need For Speed World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. Welcome to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, in which we explore -- and sometimes complain about -- the uncharted depths of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. This is your captain speaking from behind a rickety card table in a basement somewhere in the murky New Jersey Nebula. Isn't moving the worst?<br />
<br />
Last week, we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/captains-log-pondering-star-trek-onlines-executive-shakeup/">learned a little bit</a> about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, the brand new executive producer on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>. But not enough to prepare us for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/12/rumor-is-star-trek-online-due-for-turbines-business-model/">the crazy truth bomb</a> with which he torpedoed <a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/">the official forums</a>. On Sunday, Stahl suggested that he <a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2832102#post2832102">could see <em>STO</em> going free-to-play</a>. Seriously. I had planned to discuss <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/store">the Cryptic Store</a> this week anyway, and this fits in nicely, given micro-transactions' importance to the free-to-play model.<br />
<br />
Would <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> switching <em>STO</em> from subscriptions to an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-to-play/">F2P</a> model be a godsend or a hellish nightmare? (Hint: It would wind up somewhere in the middle.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: The C-Store and the perils of going freemium</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/">Captain's Log: The C-Store and the perils of going freemium</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. Lieutenant, take the helm! It's time for another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our regular foray into the farthest reaches of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. The big bombshell of the week -- no, not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-daily-grind-real-id-do-we-finally-have-our-wow-killer/">that one</a> -- has left your humble captain with a serious case of <a href="http://www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/newcivilians/faq/qvapors.htm">the vapors</a>, so allow me a moment to collect myself. <br />
<br />
Unless you've been hiding on the holodeck for days -- a wise choice, <a href="http://www.newsweek.com/2010/07/07/surfing-the-summer-heat-wave.html">given the circumstances</a> here on Earth -- you surely have heard the news: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Craig-Zinkievich/">Craig Zinkievich</a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/craig-zinkievich-leaving-star-trek-onlines-bridge/">gone, baby, gone</a>. According to Zinkievich's <a href="http://startrekonline.com/node/1875/">farewell letter</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, formerly a producer on <em>STO</em>, has taken the helm in his place. <br />
<br />
I thought we'd briefly discuss Zinkievich's departure before moving on Stahl's <a href="http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/?p=2243">recent video interview</a> with the <a href="http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/">STOked podcast crew</a>, where he dropped some delicious hints about future content and provided insight into his mindset as <em>STO's</em> head honcho.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/captains-log-pondering-star-trek-onlines-executive-shakeup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Pondering Star Trek Online's executive shakeup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/captains-log-pondering-star-trek-onlines-executive-shakeup/">Captain's Log: Pondering Star Trek Online's executive shakeup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Jul 2010 12:00:00 EST. Ahoy, space cadets! According to my space calendar, it's Space Thursday again already. That means it's time for another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your weekly peek into <em><strike>Space</strike></em> <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>.<br />
<br />
This week marks the final installment of our ground-combat trilogy. First we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">covered five basics</a> of ground combat, and last week we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/captains-log-guide-to-melee-combat-in-star-trek-online/">discussed melee combat</a> in some depth. Now we round things out with some miscellaneous tips for upping your game in a space firefight. After I rant a little first.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/captains-log-nine-more-tips-for-ground-combat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Nine more tips for ground combat</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/captains-log-nine-more-tips-for-ground-combat/">Captain's Log: Nine more tips for ground combat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST. Captain to away team: Set fists to Obliterize! It's time again for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our weekly venture into the cosmos of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Steel your nerves and ready your weapons, because we return this week to the front lines of ground combat. <br />
<br />
When Captain's Log last discussed combat, we covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">five of the most important basics</a> of fists-and-phasers fighting in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>. With the fundamentals of Exposing and Exploiting firmly in mind, we'll move on -- by popular demand -- to the exciting world of melee combat. Punching out a Borg invader might not seem very Trek-ish, but it sure gets the job done.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/captains-log-guide-to-melee-combat-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Guide to melee combat in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/captains-log-guide-to-melee-combat-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Guide to melee combat in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. Good afternoon, cadets and admirals. Welcome to this week's edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your ever-expanding guide to <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Last time, we discussed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">some basics of ground combat</a>, and I promised more to come. But I've decided to change course a bit, so we'll cover those next week. <br />
<br />
Instead, I thought it might be fun to discuss what's on every Earth nerd's mind right now: E3! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2010">The Electronic Entertainment Expo</a> has engines on full impulse this week in Los Angeles, and amid all the grand news we don't care about -- I was counting on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/nintendo-3ds-first-hands-on/">the 3DS</a> to not be totally awesome so I wouldn't have to replace my <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl/">DSiXL</a>! Curses! -- the MMO news is flying fast and furious. With all the news and shiny images of forthcoming space-based MMOs, should fans worry that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> days are numbered?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/captains-log-should-star-trek-online-fans-fear-the-competition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Should Star Trek Online fans fear the competition?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/captains-log-should-star-trek-online-fans-fear-the-competition/">Captain's Log: Should Star Trek Online fans fear the competition?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. It's time again for Captain's Log, where we examine the best and the worst <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> has to offer -- and everything in between -- each and every Thursday. Or at least until I replace my <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Emotion_chip">emotion chip</a> with a dance champion chip. Then I'm off to conquer <em>Dancing with the Stars</em>. <br />
<br />
This week, I've had a change of heart. I was in the middle of writing about grouping, loneliness and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/03/stos-season-one-update-two-soft-lands-today/">the new squad system</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> when the universe -- as the universe is wont to do -- mucked that up. As I ran around trying to take a few screenshots for the grouping column, poor Captain Gil found himself caught in a seemingly endless string of ground-combat missions. And so, if for no other reason than because I snapped a bunch of guys-shooting-each-other-with-phasers pictures, this week's Captain's Log introduces some of the basics of ground combat in <em>STO</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Five basics of ground combat in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Five basics of ground combat in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST.
