Transportation is important to any MMO, especially one like <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> which doesn't include the option of a mount. Yes, there are no cats, no horses or flying creatures to ride. It's just you, your feet, your wings and a little magic. Now the starter zones might look small but the main areas are ten times the size which can take a good half an hour to cross, not including time spent dying. Today we're going to have a look at transportation and what you need to know to navigate around. Elysea and Asmodae so join us after the jump to find out the secrets of travel in <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-transportation-101/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everything Aion: Transportation 101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-transportation-101/">Everything Aion: Transportation 101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 20:00:00 EST. Flight is probably the thing which has drawn most people to <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>. The idea of soaring high above the cloud on a pair of white/black-feathered wings is a universally appealing one. The reality, however, is a little different. Flight in <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is not something you can do immediately nor indefinitely and the rules for this are not just to be annoying, they are a part of the game's world and lore. <br /><br />Join us after the jump when we look at everything you need to know about using your wings.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-flight-101/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everything Aion: Flight 101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-flight-101/">Everything Aion: Flight 101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. So, we're going to give you all the info you need to dive into their beautifully detailed world. She might look familiar as her image is used to advertise the game and a statue of her will also be found in the <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/uk/preorder/">Collector's Edition</a> when <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is released later this month. <br /><br />"Aiva's Story" is the work of artist Neil Googe and writers David Noonan and Ricardo Sanchez. Aiva's life is torn apart when her family is killed by an Elyos raiding party. Embittered, she endures a harsh life as a mercenary, fighting Karnifs and the Mau. She brings with her a festering hatred for the white-winged Elyos, eventually ascending to Daevahood and is posted to the Abyss. The comic book will be available (albeit in limited quantities) at the <em>Aion</em> booth at this weekend's <a href="http://massively.com/penny-arcade-expo">Penny Arcade Expo</a> in Seattle but fans will also be able to get their hands on a copy by purchasing the game at GameStop in the US and Electronic Boutique stores in Canada..<br /><br />You can check out our gallery below to see the cover art in it's full glory, as well as some internal artwork.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/">Aion: Aiva's Story</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251133"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_cover_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251134"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_front_cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251135"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_spread_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <hr />

The devs over at <a href="http://ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> have just <a href="http://community.ageofconan.com/wsp/conan/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;template=content&amp;func_id=2991&amp;table=CONTENT">posted</a> their August newsletter on the game's official website. In it they look back over the last month and the announcement of the new <a href="http://massively.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>AoC</em></a> expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/funcom-announces-rise-of-the-godslayer-expansion-for-age-of-cona/"><em>Rise of the Godslayer</em></a>, as well as clarifying some titbits about the new expansion. This includes thanking players for their feedback and explaining why they chose to venture to <a href="http://conan.wikia.com/wiki/Khitai">Khitai</a> (the <em>Conan</em>-version of China) over other lands featured in the original books. The devs also touch on the fascinating subject of world design and how player feedback has shaped the new armor they are working on.<br /><br />The most interesting nugget in the newsletter is a sneak peak at what the immediate future holds for <em>AoC</em> in the form of the 1.06 update. This includes the possibility of splitting the update into parts rather than deluging players with a giant patch. They also look at the new level 80 dungeon, the House of Crom, the Veterans System and Tier Three Raiding. So if you're an <em>AoC</em> player excited about the new expansion and the next big update, you might want to head over to the official site and check out the <a href="http://community.ageofconan.com/wsp/conan/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;template=content&amp;func_id=2991&amp;table=CONTENT">newsletter</a> for yourself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/age-of-conan-devs-release-their-august-newsletter/">Age of Conan devs release their August newsletter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.wired.com">Wired.com</a>'s <a href="http://www.wired.com/geekdad">GeekDad</a> blogger Curtis Silver has <a href="http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/08/geekdad-exclusive-qa-with-the-lego-universe-development-team">taken some time</a> to sit down with <a href="http://universe.lego.com/en-us/Splash/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fen-us%2fDefault.aspx%3fdomainredir%3duniverse.lego.com"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a>'s Producer, Ryan Seabury, and the games development team. The lengthy interview was posted earlier this week and really gets under the skin of this odd little MMO. Silver also snagged two new exclusive screenshots and states that <em>"<a href="http://massively.com/category/lego-universe">LEGO Universe</a> will bridge the generational gap between geek parents and geek kids".</em> After all, who doesn't love LEGO?<br /><br />The interview itself is really quite in-depth. Silver asks, for example, if we will be able to play as Batman or other characters from the LEGO franchise videogames (no). Additionally, the piece also goes into what kind of gameplay and building we can expect and what sort of PC you're going to need to play it. The dev team seem to be aiming at a wide audience from geeks young and old to kids experiencing LEGO for the first and their parents. Indeed from the interview it certainly sounds awfully promising:<br /><br /><em>"Whether you're brand-new to LEGO construction or an expert brick builder, whether you like to follow the instructions or just go crazy making up your own creations, you'll be able to use bricks to build virtual LEGO models both on your own and with other players. You'll be helping to create and customize the worlds of <em>LEGO Universe</em> as you play. You'll be able to chat, team up for quests, build amazing LEGO creations together, and choose whether to cooperate or compete as you complete fun and creative challenges ... or adventure and build all on your own if that's your thing. How you play in <em>LEGO Universe</em> is up to you."<br /><br /></em>[Thanks Hector!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/devs-spill-the-beans-on-lego-universe/">Devs spill the beans on LEGO Universe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://aiononline.com">Aion's</a> <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-open-beta">open beta</a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/ncsoft-announces-aion-na-and-eu-open-beta-details/">officially on the way</a> so everybody will be able to sample the delights of Atreia between September 6th and 13th. Ahead of this, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/news/open-beta-client-now-available-for-download-1.html">announced</a> the availability of the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> beta client. The client can now be downloaded from various corners of the internet, including <a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/201991/200000/fileinfo/Aion-Game-Client">FilePlanet</a> and <a href="http://www.gamershell.com/pc/aion_the_tower_of_eternity/">GamersHell</a>, but the company has also announced they are making it available via <a href="ftp://ftp.ncsoft.com/Aion/Client/Torrent/AionFullInstaller_1.5.0.1.zip.torrent">BitTorrent</a>.<br /><br />Despite its shady reputation as the medium of choice for file-sharers and illegal downloads, BitTorrent itself is quite legal. Indeed it's a popular method of downloading files which has been embraced by numerous companies over the years. However, if you still want to use traditional methods, NCsoft has also announced that FilePlanet will be giving away a selection of open beta keys beginning Tuesday, September 1st. But anyone who has pre-ordered the game or won a full beta key from a competition just have to bid their time until the open beta begins.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/aion-open-beta-client-now-available-for-download/">Aion open beta client now available for download</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. There have been <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_ayase/status/3367687235">rumblings for weeks</a> about an open beta for <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> latest MMO and the company has finally confirmed details about what we can expect. North American and European gamers who may not have gotten access to the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">Closed Beta Tests</a> will get an opportunity to sample <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>, exploring the beautiful world of Atreia as either an Asmodian or Elyos. The beta will take place between September 6th - 13th and will include the new Westernised character customization options, as well as a chance to see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5/"><em>The Shadow of Balaur</em></a>, the newest patch which was added to the Korean version of the game in August.<br /><br />As with the final CBTs, the open beta will have a level cap of 30, which means new players to the game can experience <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-becoming-a-daeva/">ascension</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-becoming-a-daeva/">Daevahood</a> as well as the PvPvE area known as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/22/aion-concept-art-features-ominous-abyss-winged-balaur/">the Abyss</a>. Gamers who pre-ordered <em>Aion </em>will also get access to the pre-select and a two-day headstart before the game officially launches on September 22nd in the US and the 25th in Europe. The pre-select will take place on September 18, while <em>Aion</em>'s headstart period will begin September 20. So if you want to take part, it might be wise to pre-order now, especially given the new <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/ncsoft-launch-aion-and-guild-wars-emote-cross-promotion/">cross promotion</a> we told you about earlier in the week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/ncsoft-announces-aion-na-and-eu-open-beta-details/">NCsoft announces Aion NA and EU open beta details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST. Taking place between September 4th-6th in Seattle, PAX is fast becoming the new must-attend convention for all sections of the industry, from developers to publishers and gamers. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has just announced their plans for this year's convention and this focuses on their three big IPs: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>.<br /><br />NCsoft will once again have booths at the event, one per game. On the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> front, they will be showing the latest build of the game, which includes <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">patch 1.5</a> (aka <em><a href="http://massively.com/tag/the-shadow-of-the-balaur">The Shadow of the Balaur</a></em>). Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_xaen">Brian Knox</a> and Associate Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_liv">Lani Blazier</a> will also be on hand at booth #642. At the <a href="http://massively.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> booth (#842), there will be Q and As with the Live Team, a talk on the upcoming novel <em>The Fall of Ascalon</em> and the chance to win a 128 page <em>Art of Guild Wars 2</em> artbook. Finally at the <a href="http://massively.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> booth (#542) you can take a peek at the new update ("Power Spectrum") and nab a special PAX Costume Power code. There will also be a player meet up on the Saturday night (September 5th) hosted by the Online Community Relations team, for more information on that click <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_does_pax.html">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/ncsoft-announces-its-pax-plans/">NCsoft announces its PAX plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. That's one of the reasons <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> appeals so much. Well <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has launched a little cross promotion based on that fact. Essentially it boils down to this: if you buy a first edition of <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> (either the steelbook or the shiny Collector's Edition) you'll get a special emote which will be tied to your account. This will then allow you to summon a pair of wings in <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>! <br /><br />Unfortunately the wings are purely cosmetic, your Guild Wars avatar won't be able to take to the air but the wings will move and look awfully authentic (as seen in the image to your left). The emote itself can be triggered by typing /aion in any <a href="http://massively.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> title. Before you ask, it's completely free, has unlimited uses and will become active on September 22nd, the day <em>Aion</em> launches in North America. However it is worth stressing that the code can only be gained by getting physical versions of the game, not through digital download. The code emote is also available to gamers both in North America and Europe and will be tied to your account forever. <br /><br />For more information on how to get and redeem your emote, as well as check out what it will look like, click <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/aion/">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/ncsoft-launch-aion-and-guild-wars-emote-cross-promotion/">NCsoft launch Aion and Guild Wars emote cross promotion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 14:00:00 EST. September is just a few days away and so the folks at <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> are keen to remind players that their Summer Buddy Program for <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> will conclude on September 1st. Why is this so important? Well, aside from introducing your pals to the world's biggest sci fi MMO, you are also <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Summer_Buddy_Program">in with a chance</a> to win a trip to this year's <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/">Fanfest</a> in Iceland for you and your friend as well as a trip to CCP's head office. The full prize is the following: <br /><em><br /></em>
<p><em>Two return flight tickets from any destination that Icelandair flies to for you and your EVE Online buddy.</em> </p>
<p><em>Hotel Accommodation in Reykjavik from Sept, 30, 2009 to Oct, 04, 2009</em> </p>
<p><em>Airport - Hotel transport in Reykjavik</em> </p>
<p><em>Two Fanfest VIP passes</em> </p>
<p><em>Organized visit to CCP HQ offices in Reykjavik</em></p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>All you need to do is have an active <a href="http://massively.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> account and start spreading the word, just get them signed up with a buddy account and then cross your fingers. If you do win, you can choose who you take with you, either a friend you introduced to the game or any of your online pals on Tranquility. So enter now before it's too late!</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/eve-online-summer-buddy-program-concluding-chance-to-win-a-trip/">EVE Online Summer Buddy Program concluding, chance to win a trip to Fanfest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST. <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1250859009238*/">GamesCom</a> is in full swing with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> taking full advantage of social networking, from <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/community/twitter/">twittering</a> about their activities to <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/jtv-live/?_fb_fromhash=0bb5b27bafd406c7b59b59418afea0d9">streaming video</a> on Facebook in order to promote their newest MMO. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> has been the talk of the show with everything from an <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/37243-pics-correspondence-gamescom-aion-1-5-a.html">eye-catching booth</a> and <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/community/blog/aion-at-gamescom---bring-your-wellingtons.html">drool-worthy swag</a> to <a href="http://www.twitvid.com/2E3AB">live theatre</a> (a must-see even if the acting is cringe-worthy) to an interview with the Korean development team. <br /><br />Associate Producer Lani Blazier <a href="http://www.twitvid.com/D4CF7">took to the stage</a> to put the audience's questions to <em>Aion</em>'s Lead Designer Yongchan Jee in an epic seventy minute video. This includes discussing the origins of the combat system and PvPvE, what makes <em>Aion</em> different from other games like <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> to offering advice for would-be games designers. The interview itself is great because it's not just all about the English devs, instead we're getting to the source and a chance to listen to direct answers from one of the creators of 2009's most anticipated MMO. <br /><br />Check out the full video after the jump.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-posts-epic-video-interview-with-aion-lead-designer-yongch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft posts epic video interview with Aion Lead Designer Yongchan Jee </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-posts-epic-video-interview-with-aion-lead-designer-yongch/">NCsoft posts epic video interview with Aion Lead Designer Yongchan Jee </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> dev Yongchan Jee spilled the beans on the game's origins <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24915">as part of</a> a GDC Europe Q and A session. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com">Gamasutra</a> were on hand to find out what exactly makes the game stand out in Korea. This included addressing a gap in the market for 'AAA' titles after the release of <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/"><em>Lineage II</em></a> and <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, as well as focusing on a faction warfare angle which sees the two player-controlled races of the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/asmodians">Asmodians</a> fighting against each other and the terrifying <a href="http://massively.com/tag/balaur">Balaur</a>. Jee also discussed how the game was rebooted in 2006 and while this did affect the moral of the developers, it ultimately allowed them to start from scratch and create a truly memorable game.<br /><br />Lee also focused on the character customisation, discussing the concepts of beautiful and ugly characters in MMOs like <a href="http://massively.com/tag/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, where Korean players often favour the Alliance over the Horde. He also explained why the devs chose to create <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> as a zone-based MMO over a seamless world. <em>Aion</em> fans should definitely check out Gamasutra's write up for even more hints at <em>Aion</em>'s gestation and conception.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-dev-discusses-the-genesis-of-aion-at-gdc-europe/">NCsoft dev discusses the genesis of Aion at GDC Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. It seems <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is the next big thing. We've <a href="http://massively.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">been raving about it</a> for months and this week's GamesCom gave the press and, more importantly, the public a chance to get down and dirty with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> biggest project to date. IGN took the time to nip to the Jedi Temple and <a href="http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/101/1015748p1.html">revealed</a> that BioWare were spoiling attendees with a brand spanking new demo focusing on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sith">Sith</a>, specifically the Warrior class. <br /><br />Indeed they report this demo was basically a back to basics with this mysterious sect, focusing on their training on Korriban - could this be their starter area? They report it examines their mentality and beliefs within the Star Wars universe. After all, if you're going to roll a Sith you need to understand how their minds work as well as taking them down pits and killing giant worms. The piece is amazingly detailed and does more than enough to whet the appetites of Star Wars fans as well as Team Massively. Check it out by clicking <a href="http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/101/1015748p1.html">here</a> and you might want to start thinking up evil-sounding names while you're at it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/gamescom-offers-a-closer-look-at-the-sith-warrior-class/">GamesCom offers a closer look at the Sith Warrior class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. The Wild Hunt marks the first of a series of special events planned with special versions of the Mourkain Temple (September 11th-14th), Gates of Ekrund (September 18th-21th) and Temple of Isha (September 25th -28th) scenarios.<br /><br /><em>"This anniversary marks a major milestone for WAR, the Mythic development team, and our fantastic community of players,"</em> Jeff Hickman, <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>'s Executive Producerm<em> said.<em> "We could think of no better way of marking this occasion than by celebrating our success with our fans for the entire month of September. As all gamers know, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego">LEGO</a> is big business having created successful games out of franchises like <em>Batman</em>, <em>Star Wars</em> and, of course, <em>Indiana Jones</em>. Well now it's venturing into MMO territory (yes we're also trying to get our heads around it too) with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/netdevil">NetDevil</a>'s <a href="http://universe.lego.com/en-us/Splash/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fen-us%2fDefault.aspx"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a>. The company has just revealed a few screenshots showing <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12642&amp;game_id=7878&amp;id=139412#img139420">character customisation</a> and three of the sets (focusing on <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12642&amp;game_id=7878&amp;id=139412#img139423">pirates</a>, <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12642&amp;game_id=7878&amp;id=139412#img139417">space</a> and <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12642&amp;game_id=7878&amp;id=139412#img139413">ninjas</a>) but for fans of the console games this may very well be the MMO for you. <a href="http://massively.com/category/lego-universe"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> is scheduled to be released on PC in 2010 and does seem to capture everything we loved about the bricks in a game, whether it pays off as an MMO remains to be seen. To judge for yourself, check out all the images <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12642&amp;game_id=7878&amp;id=139412#img139413">here</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.shacknews.com">Shacknews</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/lego-universe-screenshots-reveal-a-first-look-lego-mmo/">LEGO Universe screenshots reveal a first look at LEGO MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. It seems with rumblings of an <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_ayase/status/3367687235">open beta</a> reverberating through the interweb, <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> is never far from the thoughts of the avid MMO player or Team Massively. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> just sent through a new (and shiny) batch of lovely Cleric-centric screenshots for your perusal. Focusing on the first of two subclasses, Clerics are healers who use <em>"the power of magic to strengthen allies and heal their wounds. They can resurrect their allies. They are formidable opponents in melee when using a mace and a shield."</em><br /><br />Focusing on a rather gruff-looking Elyos, a dainty female Asmodian with scary eyes and another Asmodian sporting what looks like a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/2216489/">new set of wings</a>, the images are pure eye candy. Got <a href="http://massively.com/tags/aion-beta">beta</a> withdrawal symptoms yet? Well check out our gallery below and hang on in there. Over the coming weeks we'll be bringing even more <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion</a> </em>news your way as we hurtle towards the much anticipated launch.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/">Aion: A closer look at the Priest: the Cleric</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-34-08-73_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216497"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-32-12-79_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216496"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-20-10-07_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216495"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_15-16-32-29_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216494"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_14-23-06-51_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/ncsoft-reveals-aions-priest-subclass-the-cleric/">NCsoft reveals Aion's Priest subclass: the Cleric</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 17:00:00 EST. <div align="left">MMOs tend to have dedicated fan bases and everyone has their favourite: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>,<em> <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com">WoW</a></em>, <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <em><a href="http://lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> ... the list goes on and on. Everyone has their own personal favourite or the hip one that everyone and their pet goldfish is currently engrossed in. For example, I'm renowned for my adoration of the gorgeous Korean MMO that is <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a> </em>as well as my passion for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>. <br /><br />Personally, these are the only two MMOs which do it for me enough that I will spend copious amounts of time exploring, questing and flying around pretty aimlessly. So two is my limit, I will occasionally play a couple extra, if I have to review something or a beta comes up but there's often little to keep me going past that. Yet <em>Aion </em>and<em> WoW </em>remain, filling the void and I couldn't be happier. Especially as there's more than enough happening between the two of them at the moment to keep me very busy. So I'm wondering, ever constant readers, how many MMOs do you juggle on a regular basis? Answer in the usual way by dropping your thoughts into the comment box below.<br /> </div>

<a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s latest MMO that is due to launch in the US and Europe next month, has just gone gold, the company has announced. For those not in the know, this means the game has been completed and is now being manufactured for release. Yes, that's it, the game is done. This comes after <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> has topped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/aion-collectors-edition-pre-orders-top-steam-weekly-sales/">Steam's weekly sales</a> chart and the Collector's Edition <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/aion-collectors-edition-close-to-selling-out-in-the-uk/">has almost sold out</a> in the UK. <br /><br />The announcement hits just a few days before <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/">GamesCom 2009</a> in Cologne, Germany where NCsoft will be demoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">version 1.5</a> of the game, which includes <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> content patch that was released in Korea on August 5th. NCsoft will also be demoing this latest version of the game at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle and it will also be included with the North American and European versions of the game when <em>Aion</em> is released on September 22nd/25th. <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> promises new zones, instances, quests and some specially created Western looks within the expansive character customisation system.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/ncsoft-announces-aion-has-gone-gold-now-being-manufactured/">NCsoft announces Aion has gone gold, now being manufactured</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. With the sixth and final <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">Closed Beta Test</a> for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> newest title, <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a>, beginning later today. Things are starting to get really interesting. YouTube is a haven for all things video, especially when it comes to gaming and a look at those which aren't yet out. Well, a <a href="http://aionhun.hu/news.php">Hungarian fansite</a> has uncovered the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/Asmodians">Asmodians</a> origin videos and posted them on their <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/AionHun">Youtube channel</a>. Both videos are short but packed with lore and done in a similar style to the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> origins video <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-origins-video-now-in-the-wild/">we told you about</a> last month. <br /><br />Told from the perspective of a member of each race, the two videos narrate the first meeting of the Elyos and the Asmodians after years of separation. The Elyos blundered through a rift and a simple misunderstanding, perceived differently by each side, led to the start of a bitter feud. The Elyos believed the Asmodians were corruptions and that both them and their land must be destroyed, while the Asmodians feel it is their right to conquer the Elyos and their lush land simply because they believe they - and their Shedim Lords - were the ones who saved Atreia from complete destruction during the Cataclysm.<br /><br />Juicy stuff, eh? Well check out the videos in their complete Korean glory after the jump (click on cc to get the English subtitles).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/aion-elyos-and-asmodian-origin-videos-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion Elyos and Asmodian origin videos revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/aion-elyos-and-asmodian-origin-videos-revealed/">Aion Elyos and Asmodian origin videos revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 17:00:00 EST. Is it nearly September? Apparently so as the sixth and final <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">Closed Beta Test</a> (CBT) kicks off this weekend. Over the last five CBTs we've had the chance to play both <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/asmodians">Asmodians</a>, to see the starter zones and the Abyss, to taste the PvPvE content, find our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-finds-its-voice-for-cbt5-weekend/">avatar's voice</a> and, of course, spread our wings and fly. <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/news/the-sixth-aion-closed-beta-event-1.html">According</a> to the game's official site, CBT 6 sees the level cap at 30, ready for some higher level content from <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em>, also known as <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch1.5">patch 1.5</a>. <br /><br />Perhaps more promising is the announcement of new story-driven content designed to give us a taste of what is to come: <em>"We want to conclude closed beta testing on a high note, so we are arranging a series of story-driven in-game events, in part hinting at some of the much-anticipated content forthcoming in with our massive release day patch."<br /><br /></em>Here's hoping for a little Dreadgion action and a taste of Dark Poeta when the beta kicks off this Friday at noon PST and 8pm CEST over in Europe. We'll keep you updated as soon as the <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> dev team get into more specifics about their plans.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/final-aion-cbt-promises-a-sneak-peak-at-launch-day-content/">Final Aion CBT promises a sneak peek at launch day content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/paragon-studios">Paragon Studios</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft today</a> <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/herocon/">announced</a> that <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/herocon/">HeroCon</a> has been expanded to a two-day convention and will be taking place on 24th- 25th October. This year's event, which is taking place in San Jose, California, is the 2nd HeroCon and offers a chance for fans of <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> to meet up and share their passion for the game. As if you needed anything else to tempt you into attending, the tickets cost $79.99 and there's even a goody bag which includes a special con t-shirt and an exclusive in-game item.<br /><br />The event promises pre-con activities on the Friday night as well as developer panel discussions, live mission event and contests, social events with the development team and there's even a rather posh-sounding banquet dinner with live entertainment and an awards ceremony. As usual <a href="http://massively.com/tag/matt-positron-miller">Matt "Positron" Miller</a> and Paragon Studios head, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/brian-clayton">Brian Clayton</a>, will be doing a community address as well as the usual round of interesting announcements - hopefully including something about the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/city-of-heroes-going-rogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a> expansion.<br /><br />For more information on the event and where to stay, check out the <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com.webdev.ncaustin.com/news/news_archive/announcing_hero-con_2009.html">official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/ncsoft-and-paragon-studios-announce-herocon-2009-for-october/">NCsoft and Paragon Studios announce HeroCon 2009 for October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 17:00:00 EST. According to news site <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com">Gamasutra</a>, US MMO giant <a href="http://massively.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24781">have secured</a> $6.6m worth of investment in a drive where they aim to get $50m in venture capital. Turbine are synonymous with the paid-going-free-to-play title <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> as well as the ever popular <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. They are also an independent company, which is where the investment side of things comes in, as in order to run the games they need the financial backing of other companies to survive. Given they are not a giant company like <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard Entertainment</a>, it's an interesting glimpse into how the MMO industry can work. <br /><br />The info comes by way of an eleven page Form D (which you can read <a href="http://www.10kwizard.com/cgi/convert/pdf/TurbineIncD-20090810.pdf?crl=6a63722f31736558684d69544e49526c58416978646377517366742f505762614873554e556849477365453d&amp;cik=1319743&amp;fndateext=1&amp;ipage=6458273&amp;rid=12&amp;xml=1&amp;pdf=1&amp;quest=1&amp;dn=1">here</a>) filed to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 10th. The document outlines info on the company, its director, their investors who include Highland Capital Partners, Tudor Ventures, Columbia Capital, and Granite Global Ventures and the amount of money involved. While the document is quite dry and filled with boring facts, it's good to know big businesses are acknowledging the roles MMOs have and how this is affected by their increasing mainstream popularity.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/turbine-hits-6-6m-in-50m-funding-drive/">Turbine hits $6.6m in $50m funding drive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. Some are now craftable by Engineers, there are droids for battle and some (but not all) even have decals, allowing you to change how your mechanical companions will look. <br /><br />On top of this, Engineers will now be able to craft cybernetic parts including hands, arms, legs and torsos. To commemorate this addition, every player will get an odd little gift when they log on: a holographic display depicting the cybernetic arm of everybody's favourite Jedi, Luke Skywalker. Weird but also kind of cool. The update will also contain new quest content for level 50 characters, two new vehicles and various bug fixes. For a full list, we suggest you head on over to the official site and <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/en_US/players/content.vm?page=Current%20Chapter#gu12">check out</a> the patch notes for yourselves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/star-wars-galaxies-update-12-patch-notes-released/">Star Wars Galaxies Update 12 patch notes released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> has been causing waves since it was first announced. The revelation that it would be the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/e3-2009-star-wars-the-old-republic-is-worlds-first-fully-voi/">world's first fully-voiced MMO</a> made people sit up and pay even more attention. Well now a French fan site, <a href="http://www.starwars-universe.com">Star Wars-Universe.com</a>, is <a href="http://www.starwars-universe.com/actu-7403-exclu-swu-nous-avons-la-date-de-sortie-de-the-old-republic-.html">reporting</a> (in French of course, but you can read it in English <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starwars-universe.com%2Factu-7403-exclu-swu-nous-avons-la-date-de-sortie-de-the-old-republic-.html&amp;sl=fr&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=">here</a>) that the game will see a release date in Q3 2010, specifically September. This date is attributed to what they call 'a reliable source' within <a href="http://massively.com/tag/lucasarts">LucasArts</a> itself. If this is true, it means there is just over a year until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/">the game</a> -- an MMO version of the classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> -- is launched. Excited yet?<br /><br />We're not sure how accurate this is (making it pinch of salt time, folks) and we'd really love it to be true. Particularly as the wait is not intolerable, but it also allows a nice period for beta testing. We've contacted LucasArts to confirm the release date and we will let you know what they say as and when. Until then, check out that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/behind-the-scenes-with-that-swtor-cinematic-trailer/">awesome cinematic trailer</a> below.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/mmo/news/old-republic-for-oct-2010.html">Gamerzines</a> and <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?loadnews=14642&amp;bhcp=1">MMORPG.com</a>]<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/star-wars-the-old-republic-to-launch-in-october-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic to launch in October 2010?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/star-wars-the-old-republic-to-launch-in-october-2010/">Star Wars: The Old Republic to launch in October 2010?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 09:30:00 EST. Now we've had a good look at <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> and tried out both factions it's time to look deeper into what makes the game tick. You might have got your wings and may even have done a little PvP but you've probably starting to pay more attention to the reasons behind the enmity between Elyos and the Asmodians and the lore of Atreia. Indeed, it's hard not to as, like any MMO, lore is the backbone of the game itself and the reasons we play.<br /><br />While some of the lore can be gleaned from the in-game dialogue, sometimes you have to look deeper. NCsoft <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/aion-website-refresh-includes-game-guides-and-wiki/">recently</a> <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion">created a wiki</a> on the official site, which allowed them to not only <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Beginner%E2%80%99s+Guide">explain the game</a> to new players but also gave them the perfect opportunity to <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Lore">expand on the lore</a>. They also released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-origins-video-now-in-the-wild/">an origins video</a>, which presented key events in Atreia's history in the form of a narrated montage. Join us now as we look deeper into the lore behind a fascinating game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-the-lore-of-atreia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands on with the Aion beta: The lore of Atreia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-the-lore-of-atreia/">Hands on with the Aion beta: The lore of Atreia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.nhnusainc.com/">NHN</a> have announced the start of signups for the closed European beta of their fantasy game <a href="http://karosonline.com"><em>Karos Online</em></a>. While the beta is due to start later this month, the company has already opened a <a href="http://www.karosgame.com/forum/notices.nhn?threadid=156">forum</a> to enable discussion about the game. <br /><br />Set in the world of Asmara, the player takes the role of a hero who trying to become the legendary Karos warrior. Anyone interested in signing up, should head over to the official site. <br /><br />The closed beta will also see <a href="http://massively.com/tag/nhn">NHN</a> announce more detailed information about the game, specifically its dual dungeon system. One is an 'event dungeon' which is limited to five players and sees the dungeon itself adapt to decisions made in combat. The second is a 'maze dungeon' which allow unlimited parties but is far from static. NHN says that the walls will move and shift round, disorientating players as they move further into the dungeon. As players level, these dungeons will become progressively more complex and include boss fights. The English version is due to be launched in Autumn 2009 with German and Turkish versions to follow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/karos-online-opens-signup-for-closed-eu-beta/">Karos Online opens signup for closed EU beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 15:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gdcaustin.com">GDC Austin</a> has announced that <a href="http://massively.com/sony-online-entertainment">SOE</a> president <a href="http://massively.com/tag/john-smedley">John Smedley</a> will be providing the keynote for the event, which takes place next month. Entitled: "From Daggers and Dragons to Kart Racing, Cooking and Concerts ... It's a Whole New World", the keynote -- which takes place on Wednesday 16 September -- is an obvious allusion to SOE's very own <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, which has been one of the most hyped freemium PC MMOs of the year and will eventually see a PS3 release. <br /><br />The keynote page goes a little more in-depth, informing attendees that they <em>"will learn about the challenges and lessons learned when creating a full-blown MMO for kids together with a ground-breaking new business model; and how developers can re-educate their teams to move from stagnant and dated MMO design toward mass market success." <br /></em><br /><a href="http://massively.com/tag/gdc-austin">GDC Austin</a>, which is taking place between 15th and 18th September in Austin, Texas, will also see a keynote, taking place the following day from <a href="http://massively.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> devs Frank Pearce and J. Developers work hard to create a game people will want to play, a game rich in lore and promise that people want to spend their hard earned cash on. Be it a subscription or micro transactions, they build something which will keep player interest. However, familiarity is also important. New games can be scary so there needs to be that note of homogenisation to keep people sane until the addictive side kicks in.<br /><br />It's now gotten to the point where every game I play has the same UI, the same map layout and the same kind of quests. There are unwritten rules, for example, which are dependant on where your eye is drawn so the life and mana bar goes in the upper left with the info on that mob or boss next to it, a minimap in the right and the bottom is dedicated to the action bar and inventory. On one hand this is more familiar, as well being a silent homage to the great and the popular MMOs that came before. On the other hand, it's something UI and AddOn makers, as player-developers, are constantly challenging.<br /><br />Just look at the numerous UI AddOns for <em>World of Warcraft</em>, for example. Some have awesome minimalist layouts, others focus on the centre of the screen and some -- like those of <a href="http://www.wow.com/bloggers/mark-turpin/">Turpster's</a> infamous <a href="http://www.wow.com/tag/turpstervision">Turpstervision</a> -- offer a distinct graphical twist which may (or may not) help the player. There are UIs for casual players, raiders, farmers, crafters, pro-gamers, and ultra specialised ones for each class. It's all about customisation and in someways this is one element which rests with the players over the developers who created the game.<br /><br /><em><strong>To level or not to level<br /><br /></strong></em>The other must-have feature of every MMO is leveling, a system of progression which normally relates a player's power to experience points, time played, reputation or quest hand-ins. In some games, particularly <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, leveling is essential as it teaches you how to <a href="http://www.wow.com/2009/07/17/why-leveling-will-always-be-important-to-wow/">play a class properly</a> and this can be justified for many MMOs. It can however be a bane to players, especially if they've got two or three alts of the same class waiting in the wings, and is often associated (sometimes unfairly) with grinding. <a href="http://www.apb.com"><em>APB</em></a> will be one of the latest games to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin">ignore this</a>, turning the concept on its head and making a character's level dependent on their skills. <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>, meanwhile, is completely <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/no-experience-no-levels-in-final-fantasy-xiv/">getting rid of</a> the experience and leveling mechanics altogether.<br /><br />Gamers still play all these 'new' titles but the market is becoming so saturated with that seem to borrow the best bits from games that have been doing the rounds for years. At the same time though, the lack of new material and innovation means some MMOs are tanking even before they launch. Each year, for the dozens of MMOs that are released, several either close down, consolidate servers or try to invigorate their player base by going free to play.<br /><br /><em><strong>Looking forward<br /></strong></em><br />Perhaps it's time to reassess what we know as an MMO, to reinvent it for the twenty-first century and consult with players to find out what they want in their favourite games. Either that or the MMO industry is doomed to a slow demise which will see even the most fanatical and dedicated gamers becoming frustrated and, in extreme cases, bitter. Fortunately there are titles, like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin"><em>APB</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> and <a href="http://www.citiesxl.com/"><em>Cities XL</em></a>, which are attempting to break the mould and look beyond the normal constraints associated with MMOs. Perhaps there's still hope. <br /><br />

Just think about that title for a second. Of all the games genres you've played, isn't it MMOs that feel most like carbon copies of one another? Level systems, the character creation process and class archetypes are nearly universal, with hundreds of games sharing the same characteristics. Don't you sometimes wish that MMO developers would step back and reassess the genre they have collectively created? This week, as part of Massively's "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/redefining-mmos/">Redefining MMOs</a>" series, it's my turn to muse on a topic and I've chosen to look as whether it's time the MMO mould (or mold, as my American editors would say) should be broken and re-examined.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"> <br /> Many aspects of MMOs, such as classes, levelling, raids and bosses, endure simply because they work. After all, if it ain't broke why fix it? But sometimes it feels like you need a breath of fresh air, to step back and smell the roses. This is especially the case when carbon copy MMOs start being rolled out. In the last few months I've tried MMO after MMO and can literally play each one blindfolded. Mages are mages, warriors are warriors and clerics by any other name are still priests. While the archetypes of these classes -- the healer, the tank, the caster, the melee damage-dealer and the pet-toting badass -- differ slightly between genres and titles, they are part of a formula that seems to define the MMO genre.<br /> <br /> Skip past the cut to read the rest of the article<br /> </div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/">Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 09:30:00 EST. It seems 2009 is the Summer of Betas. There certainly are a lot going on at the moment: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://www.citiesxl.com/"><em>Cities XL</em></a> and <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> are just three of the most popular currently going on but the sheer concept of beta testing is a bit of a bug-bear amongst players. There are basically two camps: those who lap up a beta and treat it is a chance to explore the newest games (and seems to include most of Team Massively) or the latest content months before anyone else. Camp number two is a little more pragmatic. For these folks, betas (while fun and exciting) are just an excuse for Company X to save some money by getting a few million free and eager quality assurance monkeys. After all they ask for detailed bug reports and the same kind of information that is asked of professionals who get paid minimum wage to play games for hours.<br /><br />So, readers, as you mull over your coffee and cereal this morning, I'm eager to know to which camp you see yourself belonging? Are betas just a cheap ploy to get a few thousand fresh pairs of eyes or a genuine attempt to gauge a new game? Drop your thoughts in the box below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/the-daily-grind-is-beta-testing-just-free-labour/">The Daily Grind: Is beta testing just free labour?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. As we inch closer to the <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> launch on 22nd and 25th September (NA and EU, respectively), the excitement about <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s latest MMO is reaching fever pitch. Yesterday, <a href="http://g4tv.com">G4TV</a> released the <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698001/Exclusive-Aion-Video-Podcast-Classes--Customization.html">second</a> <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> vidcast (the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/aions-first-video-podcast-is-packing-lore-and-stunning-visuals/">first one</a> was hosted by IGN). Featuring devs including Associate Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_liv">Lani Blazier</a> and Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_xaen">Brian Knox</a>, this one is all about character customisation. The interviews are also interspersed with some impressive in-game footage and rather arty shots of their Seattle offices. <br /><br />The vidcast begins by going through the differences between PvP, PvE and PvPvE. Indeed the highlight has to be seeing Lani try to figure out the best pronunciation of PvPvE. There's also a rundown of the main classess and the sub-class choices you can pick upon Ascending. If you're looking for one word that sums up both the game and this vidcast, it would have to be 'uniqueness'. While none of the information will be new to people playing the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">beta</a> or who have been following the game, it's great to see more of the people behind the game and their genuine passion for Atreia.<br /><br />Hit the jump to check out the video.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/second-aion-vidcast-now-available/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Aion vidcast now available</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/second-aion-vidcast-now-available/">Second Aion vidcast now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. <div align="left">On Monday <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/03/champions-online-offering-199-lifetime-sub-access-to-sto-beta/">we told you Cryptic had announced</a> a lifetime membership for <a href="http://www.Champions-Online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. For $199 you get access to the <a href="http://startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> closed beta, special costumes not available to anyone else and other juicy perks. Cool huh? Now while lifetime memberships are not new (<a href="http://lotro.com"><em>LotRO</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/lotros-anniversary-pricing-to-end-soon/">springs to mind</a>), it's a lot of money to try a must-play game but, in a way, it also binds you to said MMO. You're buying before you try, in effect, and promising to invest a large amount of time in a particular game based on screen shots, lore or the IP.<br /><br />The problem is, it's hard to tell whether a game will be hit and miss and if it ultimately goes the way of <a href="http://massively.com/category/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a>. At the same time, the really popular MMOs like <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> never seem to offer lifetime subs, as if they know they will be so popular that subscriptions will keep the game going well into the next decade. I'm wondering, constant readers, do you buy lifetime memberships and did you do it because it would work out cheaper or because you genuinely love that MMO?<br /></div>

It's a sad thing when an MMO gets switched off and all our hard played toons go to the great virtual world in the sky. This week it was the turn of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-matrix-online/"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a>. It's rare for the better known MMOs, like <em>Tabula Rasa</em>, to go out with a bang. For most games, their death throes are just a whimper as they fade into obscurity. Big or small, when a game closes it's doors, it's an event which will being a tear to some players, even if most might have already gone to pastures new.<br /><br />How do you cope when an MMO, specifically<em> your</em> MMO, dies? Imagine for a second, you've invested thousands of hours in characters, amassed a fortune in gold -- or whatever currency is hip right now -- and conquered the world <em>literally</em>. Personally, I firmly believe MMOs are not just about the world you exist in but also the people you play with. So, if you played <em>The Matrix Online</em> or <em>Tabula Rasa</em>, did you and your guild pick another game to try? Has game death prompted you to meet up in real life? Did you quit the moment the announcement of plug pulling came down from on high or were you there when the skies lightened and the end came? Tell us in the usual way by dropping your thoughts in the box below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/the-daily-grind-when-mmos-die/">The Daily Grind: When MMOs die</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. For us here in the west, the launch of<em> <a href="http://aiononline.com">Aion</a> </em>might still be on the horizon. However, having had the game for the better<a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr"> </a>part of a year, <a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr/">gamers in Korea</a> have already turned their attention to patch 1.5. Indeed this is something <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/which-version-of-aion-will-be-available-at-launch/">we should </a>also be excited about as the localized version of <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> aimed at Europe and the US will include this newest content patch. <br /><br />With this in mind, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> over in Korea has revealed a trailer touting the new patch, catchily nicknamed The <em>Shadow of the Balaur</em>. According to <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/general-discussion/20946-patch-notes-v1-5-update-shadow-balaur.html">translated patch notes</a> from the <a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr/board/tsnotice/view?articleID=94&amp;page=">official Korean site</a>, 1.5 will include new instances that will see players visiting a twisted Balaur-infested version of the Elyos starter zone known as Dark Poeta. There's also a flying ship crewed by the adorable ferret-like Shugo and a new battleground. On top of that are plenty of minor changes including the ability to zoom in on the minimap, four new face presets, new armour sets and, my personal favourite, in-game clothing in the form of kimono and the imperial uniforms of China and Taiwan. <br /><br />Check out the video after the jump for a taste of what's to come.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/ncsoft-release-korean-trailer-for-aion-patch-1-5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft release Korean trailer for Aion patch 1.5 </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/ncsoft-release-korean-trailer-for-aion-patch-1-5/">NCsoft release Korean trailer for Aion patch 1.5 </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. <div align="left">With less than twenty four hours until the next <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> beta weekend begins, everyone is getting rather excited about the introduction of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-finds-its-voice-for-cbt5-weekend/">English language files</a>. In advance of CBT5, the internet is being flooded with leaked videos showing ascension cut scenes and other aspects of game play. However, there's also something we've not seen before: a video prologue which shows the history of Atreia. As well as setting up the events of the game, it has got some pretty fantastic artwork seeming more of a montage than a cut scene. My guess is this will loop if the login screen is left alone for a while, much like a demo, in the final version of the game. There's little new here in terms of lore but it certainly looks very nice.<br /><br />Hit the jump to see the video.<br /><br /></div>

<br /><a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion: The Tower of Eternity</em></a> is attracting quite a lot of attention and, hot on the heels of the next phase in the beta, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has released a new and exciting batch of screenshots. This time focusing on the second Mage subclass -- the Sorcerer -- the fourteen screenies show new mobs and locations, as well as both Asmodian and Elyos' Sorcerers. As usual, the screenshots also come with a little bit more info about the class:<br /><br /><em>"The Sorcerer is a Daeva who follows the Star of Magic. They are able to freely wield the destructive power if the natural elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. A sorcerer is a scholar at heart, evident by the books and orbs they normally carry with them. However, these items can be dangerous weapons in their hands as they help to increase a Sorcerer's power."</em><br /><br />Check out our gallery below to see the new screenshots in all their shiny glory.<br /> <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/">Aion: A closer look at the Mage: the Sorcerer</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176055"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-15-05-51-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176053"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-14-08-18-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176052"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-55-20-84_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176051"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-27-13-68_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176050"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-09-04-48_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/ncsoft-reveals-the-second-mage-subclass-the-sorcerer/">NCsoft reveals the second Mage subclass: the Sorcerer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST. <div align="left">This weekend sees the fifth iteration of <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>'s Closed Beta Test and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has released a <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/news/closed-beta-5-is-coming.html">nice set</a> of notes to go along with it. The big news is this CBT will see the introduction of the first sound files for English audio, including NPC greetings, farewells and narration during cut scenes. During character selection you'll also be able to sample the avatar voices for the first time. If you're curious to see what the NPC voices sound like <a href="http://www.aionsource.com">AionSource</a> have managed to track down some samples of the Shugo, Elyos and Asmodian <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/30070-couple-new-voice-samples-you-happy-people-nyerk.html">sound files</a>.<br /><br />But that's not all; the long-awaited racial prologues will also be included. This is the first quest in the game, an opening cutscene which leads into the starter zones of Poeta or Ishalgen. To see them you just need to create a new character of either faction. For beginners, NCsoft are also including tutorial videos, new dialogue and quest text, various fixes and two new servers in both Europe and North America. Excited yet? Well don't forget, the fun begins on Friday at noon PST and 8PM CEST.<br /><br />Update: NCsoft have posted some samples and outtakes of their own, as well as some interesting facts about the process of creating English language dialogue, on the <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/news/serious-fun-aion-voiceover-localization.html">official site</a>.<br /></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-finds-its-voice-for-cbt5-weekend/">Aion finds its voice for CBT5 weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST. We've given <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion: The Tower of Eternity</em></a> a lot of coverage over the last couple of months but you know a game is going to be big when it appears on TV. After all, just look at the star-studded <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> <a href="http://www.wow.com/2008/11/20/ozzy-osbourne-and-steve-van-sandt-in-two-new-tv-commercials/">adverts</a> which have been doing the rounds around the world for the last year. Now Korean electronics firm LG are using the game to advertise their latest widescreen gaming monitor, the W2363V, and if it doesn't make want to play even more, then it might make you want to buy the monitor.<br /><br />The rather epic advert features in-game and CG footage and was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXZKI_XlcSE">released</a> on NCsoft's official <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ncsoft">YouTube Channel</a> last night. Touting the W2363V as the 'secret item' which will enable players to 'beat the game' (a bit of a misnomer for an MMO), the advert is suitably fantastical in feel and score. However there's no information on the monitor's release date or price, only that the advert will be shown worldwide. <br /><br />Hit the jump to check out the video in all its HD glory and you might want to think about raiding your piggy bank too.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/lg-uses-aion-to-advertise-new-gaming-monitor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LG uses Aion to advertise new gaming monitor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/lg-uses-aion-to-advertise-new-gaming-monitor/">LG uses Aion to advertise new gaming monitor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 11:00:00 EST. The class selection screen is a stable part of every MMO I've ever played. You choose your race, your gender, then your class and you are forever locked into it. The only way you can get out of it is by re-rolling a new toon, perhaps even deleting the one you created and invested time in. It's all right having fellow players suggest a class to play but if you've not had much experience, how do you pick? <br /><br />This is why I think you should have the option of rolling a character, getting to like them and then have the option of trying out different classes before you commit, utilising them like you do professions in that you have to train to reach max level. At the same time, it would allow you to experience all facets of a game with one character, saving on the hours of leveling alts. What do you think, readers?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/the-daily-grind-should-you-be-able-to-choose-your-class-after-r/">The Daily Grind: Should you be able to choose your class after rolling a toon?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 08:00:00 EST.
