It's been a heck of a week for DC Universe Online. Not only did the team show off the sweet new trailer for Update 4, cool new screenshots, and the drop of the StationPass subscription price, but we've also gotten a surprise late-week patch with Update 3 going live on Thursday rather than on Tuesday like other releases. The patch notes are incredibly long and well-detailed, offering a variety of things from new content to a heaping helping of bug fixes for existing content, powers, and more.

With the good in DC Universe Online, of course, comes the bad. Certain powers seem to be having issues, a PvP-flag bug allowing players to drop their PvP flags on PvP servers cropped up (as of this writing, this is reportedly fixed), and chat appears to once again be a cornucopia of frustrating issues. However, rather than dwell on the things that are starting to crop up (and because we're not going to have a solid picture of just what's shaken out of this patch just yet), I thought instead I'd offer an overview of the new spring-themed event for those who are curious as to just what's going on and why this one might well be the best holiday event yet.
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Spring has sprung

Alter-Ego: Spring has sprung originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 12:00:00 EST. While it is incredibly tempting to go off on a tear about the major decision announced this week to reboot the entire DC Comics universe, starting 52 new comics at issue #1 and essentially retconning every hero and villain we've known to date, this week's column isn't about that. After all, this isn't a comics site, and we've already heard from the DC Universe Online developers that the continuity in the game is separate from that of the overall DC Universe. (Considering how much we heard that noted in the recent chats, we wonder whether Sony Online Entertainment didn't know this major shake-up was on the way.) As such, I suspect we will see the game's storyline remain essentially intact, at least until the point at which we finally take down Brainiac once and for all. After that, it's anyone's guess. Depending on how the reboot works, it might well shake up the game's direction if the new comics are doing well with readers.

No, instead our superpowered game is getting its own different version of a restart in the promised upcoming MegaServer merges. While before we had multiple servers, each side will now have two -- one PvP and PvE for both PC and PS3 players -- giving us a total of four. Over this mad-scientist server-mashup, the issue of collisions looms. This week, we also found out that the merges will not only affect player names but league names as well, ensuring that there is plenty of confusion and concern on the part of the playerbase.

Will MegaServers be the bane or balm of DC Universe Online's population issues? What precisely are the facts and fallacies? Whom will this affect? Join me behind the break as I take a look at the overall situation!

Alter-Ego: What's in a name? originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 04 Jun 2011 12:00:00 EST. Good things are on the horizon in DC Universe Online, heroes, and villains! After having the chance to sit in on a roundtable discussion with Jens Andersen, Mark Anderson, and Lorin Jameson on Thursday, I am confident that the team in charge of the game's development is taking a good hard look at all the feedback it's been receiving from players. Aside from getting a chance to hear more about the soon-to-be-released Update 3, we were able to get a handful of answers for some burning questions that players have been asking about recently -- and some screenshots in the gallery below to give you a sneak peek!

Additionally, we managed to get a hint of things to come, as we're certain anyone who was watching Thursday night's DC Universe Online stickam chat noticed. For those who didn't make it, don't worry -- I'll be running down several interesting points from that event too since it meshes well with the roundtable discussion. All you have to do to get the super-scoop is join me behind the break!
Just after my column went live last week, we saw the Sony Online Entertainment servers start to come back online. Those of us who consider DC Universe Online our MMO home were able to once again get our hero or villain on and meet up with friends we'd been relegated to catching up with on Facebook. (Don't get me wrong, Facebook is fine for what it is, but it can't compare with getting to bash virtual superhero or supervillain heads in alongside your league-mates!)

As I mentioned last week, the restoration also came with a nice variety of goodies. With the added outage time tacked onto the 30 days, everyone was awarded 45 days of free play time, which isn't too shabby. I'd also note that the 45 days free applies to all Sony Online Entertainment game accounts you might have -- whether or not they were active at the time of the outage. This offers DC Universe Online players who may have opted to cancel after the first month the perfect chance to log in and check out the content updates that have gone live since launch, without having to spend a dime.

The real question is this: What type of future might we see for DCUO in the aftermath of the outages, especially with so many players screaming that they were leaving? Join me behind the break as I look at our first week back on the mean streets.
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Only doom in the hall

Alter-Ego: Only doom in the hall originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 21 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. Another week passes when those of us who want to get back to stomping around in DC Universe Online are left to our own devices. Meanwhile, Sony is continuing to work toward restoring its service as the days of the longest large-network MMO outage tick by. (We are, after all, all about the MMOs here at Massively!) Since last week's column, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that not only will subscribers be getting the free month plus a day for each day the network is down along with the Batmask, but there will be additional goodies as well.

For DC Universe Online players, that means the previously mentioned Batman and new Two-Face inspired masks (no word on whether this will be one mask per side or both masks for both sides) and 30 Marks of Distinction. Station subscribers will also get 500 Station Cash, and Lifetime subscribers get 10 additional Marks of Distinction. (For those not familiar, Marks of Distinction are what you need to get Tier 2 raiding gear.) Personally, I think the marks are a wise choice of bonus since locked out players re essentially losing the chance to run dailies and raiding, both of which involve timers. The amount is also especially wise -- it's a good portion based on outage time but isn't so huge that people can immediately jump into lots of T2 gear. The cheapest piece (back-slot) would take all 40 marks a Lifetime subscriber had.

Meanwhile, as SOE remains locked in its security and networking cocoon, we're left on our own to hunt down other DC Comics entertainment. As I'm also a player cut off from running around and then using this column to write about things I'm experiencing in the game, this week I figured I'd once again diverge from the game to the larger DC Comics universe and take a look at a few cool DC things to come.
Continue reading Alter-Ego: In blackest night, no pilot's light, awaits the city frights

Alter-Ego: In blackest night, no pilot's light, awaits the city frights originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 14 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. As we already know, Sony's PSN servers have been offline for well over two weeks at this point, and Sony Online Entertainment's PC networks followed suit earlier this week due to the same hack. We also know that all DC Universe Online players will be receiving a month's free subscription time plus one additional day for every day the network is down in addition to a funky-looking Batman-inspired mask. The topic of the overall network breach is so big that it's crossed from gaming news to mainstream media -- the U.S. government has called Sony on the carpet about the loss of personal data, and Australia is planning to add new privacy laws due to the breach.

As a long-time SOE gamer, I understand the frustration, trust me. I am concerned about my personal data being out there, have signed up for credit monitoring, and filed fraud alerts with the three major bureaus just to be safe. Still, rather than devoting yet another post here on Massively to the security breach, I thought it would be better to instead borrow a page from Karen's great Guild Counsel posting from earlier this week so I can offer up some different DC Comics-related things to do while the game is offline. At least one of the suggestions is both free and time-sensitive, so be sure to join me after the break as soon as you can!
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Ways to get your DC Comics fill -- free!

Alter-Ego: Ways to get your DC Comics fill -- free! originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 07 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. One of the things that people tend to like about DC Universe Online is the fact that it's an extremely solo-friendly game. If you're just out to enjoy the PvE storyline as you level up, the majority of the content can be done without your ever needing to speak to another person. However, if you're playing solo, you're really missing a lot of the best parts of the game. Even when leveling up, there are Arenas, tough bosses running around in the open world, and more that really require some extra hands in the fight. There's also the rather obvious point in playing an MMO: It's ultimately all about getting a chance to play the game with other people. If you're only interested in a single-player game, Batman: Arkham Asylum or any of a number of other cool DC Universe-based games are readily available. Better yet, they don't require a subscription fee.

The problem with remaining isolated really comes when you hit endgame. As with many MMOs, DC Universe Online's endgame changes the way the game itself is played. At level 30, the PvE content turns into group-required progression through the pursuit of tier raiding gear. Players who remain solo and want to continue a PvE path will find it difficult to progress, thereby turning a fun game into a waiting game as they queue for instances that may or may not ever pop. As a case in point, I've recently jumped to the Villain side to see how the other half lives, and I'm also looking around for an active league to join. This got me to thinking about the best places to do just that and a couple of important considerations to keep in mind. So if you're on the hunt for a new home for your DC Universe Online characters -- or are looking to find more people to join your league -- then join me after the break!
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Landing the perfect league

Alter-Ego: Landing the perfect league originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 30 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. With its tie to the PS3 as well as the emergence of achievement systems in other MMOGs, the presence of achievements in DC Universe Online probably doesn't come as much of a surprise. With that said, unless you've taken the time to poke around in the Feat section, you may not be aware just how many there are for players to complete. You also may not be aware that completing feats doesn't just get you bragging rights; it also grants you additional skill points to improve your character. Whether you're the type that enjoys exploring the open world, prefers soloing, or gets into PvP matches and beats the snot out of other players, there's a little something for everyone in terms of things to unlock.

And if you happen to be on a realm where getting a group is a bit tricky and you simply love running around in the world of DC comics, feats give you something to pursue while you're waiting for friends to log in or for a group instance to pop. Additionally, in looking through the rather in-depth feat listings, you might be surprised to realize just how much lateral content you missed while you were following the main storyline for your side. From hunting iconic characters, roaming the world, and completing missions at high-speed onward to sillier things like breaking hundreds of barrels, there are tons of opportunities to further enrich your experience in DC Universe Online.

So if you've been looking for something new to try or simply want a way to continue improving your character after you hit level cap, then join me behind the break. I'll be taking a look at the many different feat types available in-game as well as offering some tips and tricks I've picked up from my own feat-mad achievement-chasing sessions.

Alter-Ego: Featuring Feats originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 23 Apr 2011 14:00:00 EST. Don't be scared! Today's One Shots is a fantastically dark screenshot from Warhammer Online -- a game that we definitely don't get to see too often! With dark, jewel-toned mist in the background, it looks like this nasty beast is ready to pounce on the unwitting traveler. However, thanks to the handy link Xpander sent us, we understand that this fellow is quite solidly frozen -- at least for the moment. Xpander writes in: "I did some exploring around the world and bumped into a huge cavern. This location is known as Frostshard Prison."
No matter whether you like Final Fantasy XIV, there's no disputing that the graphics are lush, and some would say, truly inspired. Today's shot hovers between being ethereally lovely and being a bit ominous, as the fog near the ground could hide all manner of nasty monsters just waiting to take a bite out of some weary travelers' hides. This fabulous Final Fantasy XIV image comes to us from Focant, who writes in to explain:

"After porting into Mor Dhona (I have no idea what would bring me to that hellish place) via the Camp Revenant's Toll Aetheryte, I was greeted by a truly eerie sight. A miasmic haze filled the air, darkening the landscape and turning the sky a pale lavender. The weather just highlights the dangers of the zone, a place that even a group of max-rank players have to watch their backs in. The zone is usually empty too, considering it serves little purpose beyond a few short missions and acting as a mass grave for adventurers. Well... and as eye-candy."
Next week we'll be introducing theme weeks to One Shots, kicking things off in the most logical place: starting zones! If you'd like to help us out with One Shots, then send a screenshot of what you think is the best starting zone in any game to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here for everyone to enjoy and give you the thanks!
One of the most common questions I get every week in the comments for Alter-Ego is whether or not I think people should come play DC Universe Online. Obviously, I personally like the game, else I wouldn't still be playing and writing a column about it. I freely and openly admit my bias there. I'm a comic geek, so I've played every superhero MMO that's come out to date. While I love aspects of all of them, I currently prefer DC Universe Online for the fact that I get to run around with some of my favorite heroes and take down villains that I've known all my life.

So with my bias openly stated, I'd like to counterbalance it with this: As a veteran MMO player, I also won't put up with things I think are absolute crap for very long. Much like everyone else, I have a life to attend to outside of MMOs, I had to shell out for a copy of the game, and I pay my own subscription each month. I get just as irked when I feel as if I'm not getting value for that dollar as anyone else does. With that in mind, let's take a look at DC Universe Online from launch to current day, and I'll toss out my thoughts on picking up the game afterward.
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Looking at the state of the game

Alter-Ego: Looking at the state of the game originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 16 Apr 2011 14:00:00 EST. In all the time I've written One Shots here on Massively, one of the many things that seems to make Lord of the Rings Online players want to stop and snap screenshots for us is this particular rainbow. While seeing a rainbow at night is possible, it is incredibly rare. When it comes to MMOs, it's even rarer still. Nonetheless, it's always great to see that this beautiful night sight is still out there, lighting the way for yet another traveler in Middle-earth. Today's darkly quiet image comes to us from Sire Angelus, who writes: "This is a screenshot of my Dwarf Guardian in Lord of the Rings Online; it was taken while he was questing in Eregion. I assume a rainbow at night is a graphical glitch of some kind, but it was an awfully pretty one."
We don't know about you, but we think there's something particularly evil-looking about the fiery portals that open up in RIFT. Perhaps it's because of an aversion to fire, or maybe it's due to the well-instilled idea that fire, demons, and brimstone go hand in hand. Whatever the case may be, this scorchingly eerie screenshot comes to us from Chadwich, who writes in to tell us of his experience: "This is a fire rift that roared to life and burnt the countryside asunder. It was the beach-head of a fire assault. Within minutes of the rift opening, minions began pouring out and charging down the road toward the closest villages. Time was of the essence. We had to close the rift as fast as we could."
Because of the changes recently made to the death penalty in Allods Online, some players are giving this interesting MMO that we don't often see on One Shots another chance. Today's sunny Allods Online screenshot comes to us from Hazael, who captured a great shot of the sunlight beaming through the city. Hazael writes in to tell us a bit more about the picturesque setting: "It is sunset in the Empire city of Nezebgrad. Sometimes I just like to stare off at the environment; it is so soothing and beautiful."
What's a poor Dwarf to do when an absolutely enormous rift opens up nearby? Gather up all the magical firepower he can and head right for it! Today's RIFT screenshot sent in to us by Stuxatte shows off a group of NPCs putting their heads together just before a giant water rift descended on the area. Being a helpful sort, Stuxatte decided to lend a hand to face the oncoming nastiness, and he writes in: "I was trekking through the Moonshade Highlands and I came across a band of local Dwarves doing battle with an Abyssal invader from the Plane of Water. Just before I stopped to help them out, I took this screenshot of the scene, which I think captures the lush and brooding feel of the zone."
Those crazy Goons seem to love just about any excuse to party they can get. Perhaps it's because of some sense of fun carrying over from the recent EVE Online Fanfest, or perhaps it's simply the potential of taking sov over another sector that gets them in the mood to get down. Whatever the reason, Bob Gold from the Dromedaworks corp sent in this fun EVE Online screenshot of a recent conga line made up of TEST and other assorted Goon ships. He cryptically notes: "[This is a screenshot of] TEST Alliance Please Ignore and Goons forming the obligatory conga line while waiting to go shoot a POS."

If you've been thinking about sending in a fun screenshot of your favorite game for One Shots, there's no time like the present! Just email your image in to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing in the picture. Please make sure your image is at least 1024px wide and has no visible UI in it. You never know -- your screenshot could be the next one we feature here on Massively!
Tired of the same old same old in your favorite MMO? Looking for something else to do? Well, if you're one of a particular breed of players, you might try out setting some self-imposed limitations on your leveling. In World of Warcraft, several players have tried their hands at different methods. Gutrot from the EU leveled to 70 wearing only a loincloth. Gweryc decided to run his hunter as a melee-only character. Noor the Pacifist then decided to level his character to 70 by not killing any mobs at all, and he only did quests that involved non-violent criteria (like FedEx quests).

Now we hear that another player has upped the alternative-leveling ante by not questing at all. Everbloom, level 85 Night Elf Restoration Druid from the Feathermoon server, leveled all the way to 85 by grinding exploration and gathering experience! While Everbloom's armory profile shows that the character entered one five-man dungeon at some point, there is only one completed quest -- and Everbloom explained that one was a fluke. Apparently Blizzard blindsided her by granting a quest completion for simply reading an Argent Tournament invitation letter -- even without having a quest for it. Everbloom additionally managed to level to 85 while only dying 25 times in total (once to falling), making this crazy stunt an even more impressive feat.

The fun parts of jumping into any brand-new MMO are those moments of finding out-of-the-way places. It's even more fun when you snap pictures and send them in to us here at Massively so we can share them with everyone else. Take, for example, this lovely mountain range captured in RIFT by Kent D., whose avatar gives us a sense of the mountains' scale and distance. Kent writes in to tell us more about this picture: "This is a screenshot of my character Hark from the RIFT server Reclaimer. I took it while at the Lake of Solace and facing toward the high-level zone of Shimmersand. As you can tell, it was quite lonely!"

If you haven't shared a great screenshot with us yet, there's no time like the present. If you've got 15 minutes, an MMO, email, and the ability to take a screenshot, we want to hear from you. Take a great picture and send it to us at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a note telling us what we're seeing in your super-awesome screenshot. It really is that easy!
With the addition of the feature episodes, the team at Cryptic Studios has been hard at work expanding the missions and storyline of Star Trek Online. Players are sent to all manner of exotic locales and required to get to the bottom of all manner of craziness, such as this particular story arc that involves the Romulans. Today's Star Trek Online image comes to us from our regular contributor, Ocho, who didn't go too far into detail as to what precisely we're seeing here, noting only: "[This is] from the recent Cloaked Intentions series that just finished up, which is easily the best feature episode series to date."
One of the best things about playing DC Universe Online, in my opinion, is the great deal of rich history there is for all the characters. There is also the fact that the iconic DC characters aren't just relegated to the shelves of your local comic book store. Even if you're not the biggest comic nerd on the face of the planet, you've undoubtedly seen at least a few of the iconic characters from the DC universe like Superman or Batman in cartoons on television or at the movies.

With Update 2 now live in DC Universe Online, three more names have joined the ever-growing list of in-game characters who have crossed from popular culture into the online world. The Penguin and Two-Face are busy scheming over the future of Gotham, while Mister Mxyzptlk has taken to the streets of Metropolis to play his strange tricks. This week, I thought it would be fun to look a little deeper into the origin stories of the troublesome trio, as the same popular culture that makes these three characters recognizable may also cause some confusion when you run up against the in-game versions -- and their current motives. I should also note, lest the continuity fiends jump on me for it, that these origins are sourced directly from the DC Universe site.
Continue reading Alter-Ego: A closer look at Update 2's troublesome trio

Alter-Ego: A closer look at Update 2's troublesome trio originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. You never can tell what kind of strange and interesting people you'll run into at your local MMO tavern. Some prefer to drink and play cards, others prefer to gossip, and then there are those folks who use these social spots to find dungeon groups. Today's image from RIFT not only offers us a look at one such dungeon-running hopeful but also nets us some sage -- and funny -- advice.

Undoubtedly anyone who has raided in World of Warcraft would take exception to the advice today's contributor, Melissa, received from this well-meaning gentleman. However, as this is from RIFT, Melissa wanted to pass it along: "I'm an explorer in MMO cities and will typically go to just about every corner of a building and meet all the town's citizens. In Sanctum I met Mitch, an un-Ascended Adventurer, and he gave me a bit of advice about dungeon fires. He also told me he has trouble finding groups for dungeons, since he can only die once."

We love adventurers who find funny things in familiar MMO landscapes. For that matter, we love seeing games that aren't often featured here too! If you'd like to contribute to One Shots, it's very easy to do. Email a screenshot showing off a slice of life from the MMO you're currently playing to us here at oneshots@massively.com. Make sure you add in your name, the name of the game, and a note about what we're seeing in the picture as well. It's the end of the week, and you know what that means! Not only do we get to ramp up to enjoy a weekend full of gaming, but it's also time for the latest edition of The MMO Report. This week Casey takes a moment to look at World of Warcraft's April Fools' Day prank and tackles the discussion of DPS players paying tanks to tag along so they can get into instance groups faster. On a more somber note, Casey notes the layoffs at Sony Online Entertainment, which resulted in the shuttering of three studios and cancellation of The Agency; he also mentions Square-Enix's games coming back online after the recent tsunami in Japan. Also noted is the upcoming Mortal Online: Dawn expansion, which should offer even more gritty, naked PvP fun for all.

From there, it's all silliness in Uncle Casey's Mailbag -- complete with some RIFT vs. WoW snaps, yet another edition of strange Schreiner shoops, and more silliness. We're also treated to a quick aside that reveals Casey has awesome taste in music -- much like our own. As always, you can check out this week's episode of The MMO Report tucked behind the break for your sanitary protection or over on the G4TV site every Thursday.
The MMO Report: Surprisingly Commando-free edition originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. Are you wanting a super-cool mount in Wizard101 but finding yourself a little strapped for crowns when it comes to picking up a ride of your own? If so, we've got good news for you. There's a special "mount-a-polooza" sale going on in the Spiral right now, a sale that reduces mount prices up to 50% off the normal cost! Along with that, players will find that not only are all the regular rides in the store right now, but some old favorites have returned from their retired status along with a handful of all-new mounts!

According to our friends over at KingsIsle Entertainment, Wizard101 players can also look forward to a future update that will allow their mounts to wander around their houses, similar to how pets function now. Perhaps you could even pick up a sleek shark like the ones our friends from Ravenwood Radio are riding in the above screenshot! In the meantime, check out the roaming mount video (with a few surprises) behind the break, then head over to the Wizard101 site to snap up a stylish new ride of your very own.
Continue reading Wizard101 offers many mounts for the masses

Wizard101 offers many mounts for the masses originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 14:00:00 EST. With so many well-known, picturesque locales in Lord of the Rings Online to choose from, some players might have trouble picking which one of myriad places is their particular favorite. Not so with today's One Shots contributor, Floisorin Shattershield, who feels that the beauty of this golden, enchanted wood in Lord of the Rings Online is second to none. Floisorin expounds further upon his particular choice: "I've traveled far and wide; I've solved the problems of every region in the known world. I have seen it all, and yet very little rivals the beauty of Lothlorien. A true masterpiece."
While the cheerily lit windows of a village may prove a warm, cozy sight in the case of some fantasy towns, today's RIFT screenshot gives one the feeling of anything but. Weary travelers will find no solace here, as this is the city of the goblins. Behind each of those windows lies an enemy fueled by the hatred and the fiery powers of the riftdwellers, each bent on destruction. Definitely not the kind of place one looks for a friendly tavern to pass the night!

Today's darkly stunning RIFT screenshot comes to us from chadwich, who writes in to tell us of his travels in this area: "[This is] the nexus of the Goblin city, Darkening Deeps. My party and I explored deep into this cave in search of the head of the goblins' master. Eventually we put a stop to their insidious plans and brought their vile masters to justice. In the name of the Vigil!"
Recent layoffs at SOE may have caused a certain amount of trepidation in terms of future development on some of the company's most popular titles. Thankfully, the most recent Producer's Letter from Dave "SmokeJumper" Georgeson should put many EverQuest II players' minds at ease. He took some time to sit down and give us an outline of plans the EverQuest II developers have for 2011, indicating that things are very good for the game's future.

Those who purchased the most recent expansion, Destiny of Velious, will be glad to hear that en route is even more content that will further expand on the Age's End Prophecy storyline. That content will only be available to those who picked up the expansion, however, so if you've been thinking about getting it, now would be a good time. Next up, it appears that Freeport is going to be getting a pretty heavy makeover both in terms of layout and what it will offer to players -- along with becoming a single zone open to flying mounts! We don't want to spoil you for all the interesting information mentioned, so if you're curious, head over to the EverQuest II site and check out the newest Producer's Letter.
New EQII producer's letter outlines roadmap for 2011 originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 13:30:00 EST. Heroes and villains, the time has come to vie for the future of the Earth itself in City of Heroes. Issue 20: Incarnates is now live, and the battle between the praetorians and the superheroes of Primal Earth has escalated to a fever-pitch. Only the very strongest and bravest among you will have the chance to stand against Emperor Cole and save all mankind from utter destruction at this madman's hands.

This newest update to City of Heroes continues the new storyline started in Going Rogue. As such, players will need the expansion to be able to take advantage of the majority of the newest content such as the Lambda Sector Incarnate trial and the Behavioral Adjustment Facility. It also introduces new powers for heroes and villains, along with a host of other great content. So while your client is patching, you can watch the launch trailer we've tucked behind the break or check out our exclusive I20 dev diary if you haven't already!
Continue reading City of Heroes Issue 20 now live

City of Heroes Issue 20 now live originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 18:30:00 EST. For the last little while, players have been enjoying holiday content in Final Fantasy XIV while the development team has been working to improve the overall user experience. Meanwhile, today's One Shots contributor, Holden H., has been trying his best to capture a particular in-game scene to share with the rest of us. Triumphant, he sent this gorgeous vista in to us and writes:

"Holden H. is the name, Final Fantasy XIV is the game, and this is nothing more than a clear day out doors of Ul'dah. I stumbled up here in the middle of a sandstorm to talk to an NPC and when it was time to turn around and head home, the storm had cleared. I've been trying to take panoramic screenshots of the desert for a while now. The visual level I play at is good for short range but bad for taking pictures of long-distance visuals. As a result I have to log out, turn up the settings, and log back in. I haven't been having that much luck with it: Usually by the time I get back in game, the sun has set or a sandstorm rolls in. This time things worked out."
We're always looking for great screenshots for One Shots. Want to help us out? It's easy to do. Just email your image in to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here on Massively and give you the credit for sending it in.
Are you ready to stand up to the diabolical plans of the Penguin and take your chances with Two-Face? For the heroes and villains of DC Universe Online, today is the day to do just that, as Update 2 is out on the live servers, ready to offer all manner of new challenges to those willing to heed the call.

Aside from all the great new endgame, Legends, and holiday content we heard about in talking with Chris Cao a couple of weeks ago, there's a whole slew of bug fixes and improvements in this wide-reaching update. Among the many things that have been fixed are several animation bugs, feat issues, and oh-heavens-yes, those incredibly annoying bugs that stopped players from being able to complete quite a few instances. Add in the ability to bring back friends into instance groups if they get dropped, several new UI changes and more, and you have a great patch that's chock-full of things that DC Universe Online players have been clamoring for.

With darkening eyes and a thirst for revenge that may well mean the utter decimation of the kingdom of Aden, Shilen comes. Not content to rest on its laurels, the team at NCsoft is hard at work localizing the next major update for Lineage II: the Goddess of Destruction expansion. Just one look into her steely, cold stare and you just know all hell is going to break loose. After all, hell hath no fury like a Goddess scorned.

According to NCsoft, we'll be hearing the first concrete information on the U.S. version of this update on April 28th. Until then, you can check out all the spooky CGI trailer action behind the break and bookmark the Goddess of Destruction page on the Lineage II website for when that fateful date in late April arrives.
Continue reading The goddess is set to wreak havoc in Lineage II

The goddess is set to wreak havoc in Lineage II originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 14:00:00 EST. In the war-torn world of RIFT, there's one way to make sure your side has the upper hand: enormous weaponry! Not only does it give you the ability to rain hot death down on whatever you point it at, but there's also sleek, almost steampunk-looking style to the lines of this piece of machinery. This imposing bit of RIFT warfare was captured for us by Selora, who writes in to explain: "I like to call this 'the BFG' (Big F'in Gun). Maybe it's a dragon-zapper. Anyway, it's located along the top of the southwestern mountains in Moonshade Highlands."

Last week we got the bad news that Sony Online Entertainment laid off 205 employees and shuttered the Denver, Seattle, and Tucson studios. The announcement was coupled with the news that that The Agency, the long-anticipated "spy-fi" MMO, was also being canceled. The intent, SOE said, was to focus on its upcoming MMOs based on its extant IPs: PlanetSide Next and EverQuest Next.

However, in the wake of all the layoffs, there will also apparently be a delay in the development time-frame for PlanetSide Next. According to a statement by John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment, the game "will be out a little later in the year" but the team is focused on "pulling out all the stops to make it great." It's sad news, but we're certain that a lot of PlanetSide fans would rather have a great, polished game over a game pushed out quickly to meet a now-unrealistic development schedule.

Update: SOE's John Smedley has posted several reassuring comments to the PlanetSide Universe forums:

Recently (a few weeks ago actually) we made the call to update the game to a new internally developed engine. Doing that meant delaying the game, but we thought it was in the best interests of PlanetSide Next. It also means delaying releasing further info for a little while. I will let you all know more when we firm up the schedule. The likely next step is a larger scale release of information and the beta signups going up. As I've said previously current Planetside subs will be included automatically.

Normally when we do game announcements we do a much bigger concerted information push all at once and these kind of one off posts don't happen. In this case I feel like the PlanetSide audience has hung in with us for a long time and I really want to involve you all more in advance of the official info. However what happens is everything gets carried across the net and the actual info gets changed. I'm sorry for that happening. We will do our best to keep you informed early. But that necessarily means that sometimes when things change you have to be ready for that too.

While the majority of April Fools' pranks are now well behind us for another year, there's one still running in Guild Wars -- at least until tomorrow! ArenaNet pulled off a great stunt this year with the announcement of the Guild Wars 2 "Commando." Then the team took it a step further by creating an all-new quest in Guild Wars that adds these future-warriors as part of a special holiday event for players. Today's One Shots of the in-game silliness was snapped by Connor, who explains the fun for those who don't call Tyria home:

"M'name's Connor, and I was browsing through my daily Twitter and forum posts when I saw something new on the ArenaNet twitter account saying something about 'Corporal Bane's last day in Embark Beach.' Being the fanboy I am, I immediately rushed to log in, catching a ship over there. What did I see? A SWAT guy in body armour with a gas mask and an army helicopter. Truly awesome. He starts an instance quest that involved becoming a Soldier and destroying the 'Annihilator' who travelled back in time to kill 'Sarah' who is the mother of Gwen. This is during the Guild Wars, when the Krytan Army had invaded Ascalonian territory. Here's a quick snap from inside that instance. Location is Pre-Searing Ascalon outside of Fort Ranik!"

One Shots is all about our readers' adventures. If you'd like to take part, it's really easy to do. Just snap a screenshot that shows off whatever you want to tell us about, then send it in with your note to us here at oneshots@massively.com. While Fanfest is over for another year, left in the memories of those who attended and had the chance to party down at the top of the world, life in EVE Online continues. This gives us a chance to catch up with our occasional EVE Online One Shots contributor, Mal Iss, as he tells us about this recent scene and the memory it evoked:

Each time I take screenshots of this great game, my mind remembers things: scenes or quotes from movies and books. Along those lines, here's another quote taken from a sci-fi film that fits this picture perfectly!

Dr. Weir: The ship doesn't really go faster than light; what it does is it creates a dimensional gateway that allows it to jump instantaneously from one point of the universe to another light years away.
Lt. Starck, Executive Officer: How?
Dr. Weir: Well, that's -- that's difficult to -- it's all math...
Miller: Try us, Doctor.
Dr. Weir: Right. Well, um, using layman's terms... Use a retaining magnetic field to focus a narrow beam of gravitons -- these, in turn, fold space-time consistent with Weyl tensor dynamics until the space-time curvature becomes infinitely large, and you produce a singularity. Now, the singularity...
Miller: 'Layman's terms'?
Cooper: Well, f*** layman's terms! Do you speak English?

Last week we took a look into the Fire powerset in DC Universe Online, one of the two tanking powersets available to heroes and villains who want to spend their time at the front lines of the fight. As noted last week, the Fire powers make tanking a snap by simply soaking damage through the use of self-healing. Ice, by contrast, is all about mitigating damage through armor abilities, which help tanks shrug off smackdowns that would leave other players knocked out and drooling on themselves.

While my Ice tank is just shy of DC Universe Online's endgame at the moment, I have spent time running her in groups, reading just about anything I could put my mitts on about tanking powerset suggestions, and fiddling with my own build as I progress. I feel pretty comfortable recommending five great powers to consider for an Icy-tanking hotbar, since I've seen these oft repeated. I find them useful in my everyday play now -- even if I'm not quite up to smacking the biggest baddies around yet. So if you're curious as to what much research (and faceplanting) has unearthed as five of the best Ice tanking powers, then join me behind the break!
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Five powers that make Ice nice

Alter-Ego: Five powers that make Ice nice originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 02 Apr 2011 14:00:00 EST. With the NDA down on Black Prophecy and more and more people checking it out all the time, we're surprised we haven't seen more screenshots from this upcoming free-to-play sci-fi spaceship dogfighter mailed in to One Shots! Today's sleek image from Black Prophecy (with minimal UI) comes to us from Erik L., who writes in: "This is a view of the hyperspace chapel Apo Kata, which is one of the early hubs in the game. I think the view is a nice example of this good-looking game. If one just watches the surroundings for a short while, one can see the trails of ships leaving and arriving in the area."

If you're taking part in a beta that isn't under NDA, why not beat the crowds and send in some cool screenshots to us? It's easy to do. Gather a few images up and email them to us here at oneshots@massively.com. Be sure to include your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing in each picture. Your screenshot could be the next one we post on Massively!
With great facial hair comes great responsibility, as Casey Schreiner knows. This week on The MMO Report, we're given not only a healthy serving of news and views on all things MMO but also a glimpse into past-Casey. We also learn of time-traveling-Casey, who apparently shares beard-care tips with the early Jedi.

First up, it's a look into the news about Defiance, the upcoming sci-fi MMO from Trion Worlds and the Syfy Channel. That, in turn, leads us to ask: Does anyone else look at the channel name and want to pronounce it "siffy?" After that, we get a look at a shockingly Schreineresque Jedi in the Star Wars: The Old Republic newsbyte. Charging onwards, it's a note on the EVE Online/DUST 514 cinematic from Fanfest that CCP released to the drunken capsuleer masses -- and then the rest of us. Next up, it's time to look at the toad-ally awesome Guild Wars 2 Hylek, and finally we finish off with the standard sack silliness, including a bit of internet archaeology.
After a great run at PAX East, the team at Paragon Studios is back at the office and working hard on the next update coming to City of Heroes. According to the March Producer's Letter by Nate "Second Measure" Birkholz, players can expect Issue 20, which will bring in the new Incarnate powers for players, to go live next week. Along with this announcement is the news that a respec will be available with the launch of I20, as well as another one later in April when the Anniversary celebrations get underway -- so you'll have a chance to tinker further with your new builds!

That said, the bulk of the March update is spent offering some thoughts from the Paragon Studios team in regard to the upcoming Global Server List changes. As Birkholz notes, the studio "know(s) that your online and in-game identities are important. City of Heroes is at its heart a game about who you are, not just what you do." So if you have some trepidation about the way changes are coming then you'll definitely want to check out Birkholz' letter for more insights on what they might mean for you. Also, don't forget to leave your feedback on the connected forum thread.
CoH March Producer's letter addresses I20, Global Server Lists, and more originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 19:00:00 EST. For a newcomer to RIFT, there's a lot to get your head around. Aside from just picking up the lore of the world and figuring out how your different powers and abilities work, you also step into a hostile and unforgiving world where rifts may block you from progressing much further -- at least not without help, or dying! Today's RIFT image comes to us from Mike N., who ran into a particularly messy situation during the game's headstart. He writes in: "One of my first experiences during the RIFT headstart was seeing one of the many massive invasions that can occur. I turned away from my questing for a second and noticed four death rifts all lined up, waiting to be tackled. These guys don't mess around." He even managed to capture an NPC running away from the rifts!

Have you snapped a screenshot showing off some particularly nasty odds? If so, share it with us! Email your image in to oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a note telling us about what's going on in the picture. Your screenshot could be the next one we feature here on Massively!
Video may have killed the radio star, but interesting clips from MMOs become the stuff of viral legends. Now, thanks to Trion adding YouTube posting integration to RIFT, players no longer need to rely on an external video recording setup to capture their gaming action and send it out for complete strangers on the internet to watch. That's right, you too can share your finest moments of pwnage easily thanks to the integrated YouTube uploader. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be glad to hear that the RIFT uploader tool doesn't automatically add Linkin Park, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, or any similarly metallic soundtrack to the clips. (We would note that it will capture all sounds on the computer, so if you're playing goofy music or sexytalking on VOIP, be warned!)

According to our very own Beau, who loves nothing more than to upload lots of video, RIFT's movie feature is extremely simple to use. All you'll need to do is to connect your YouTube account from inside your RIFT account settings, much like you currently do with Twitter. From there, hitting CTRL-Y will start the recording, and pressing CTRL-Y a second time will stop it. The video is encoded automatically, and a small button will appear in the corner of your screen when your video is ready to upload. Just click the button and off to YouTube it goes! Beau also noted that if you have Twitter connected to your account, RIFT will send out a tweet telling your Twitter friends that you've uploaded a new game video to YouTube. As such, you may want to hold off on using the new video feature during any "sick" days at home.
