This week's Tattered Notebook started off business as usual. I was putting together part two of a look at the layers of change in <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> through the years. But I was also mulling over a column about the new Hero's Edge items that arrived on the Marketplace; something I had just speculated about in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-tattered-notebook-learning-from-eqiis-free-to-play-model/">a recent column</a>. There was also the news about upcoming crafting changes to talk about.<br />
<br />
And then, suddenly everything gets put into perspective. Ribbitribbitt, the young <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a> fan who had been battling cancer, passed away at the age of six. A couple of months ago, the <em>EQII</em> community got a request for assistance in building an in-game playground from his mother, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">what followed</a> was an unprecedented show of support. His mother, Myrose, passed along the sad news to the community this past week with <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?&amp;topic_id=518604">a brief forum post</a>, and the community mourned his loss.<br />

There are ways to leave a guild, and then there are cringe-worthy, horrifying ways to leave a guild, burn your bridges, and never, ever leave the door open for a possible return. We've all heard tales (and sometimes witnessed them firsthand!) of people leaving guilds in ways that defy humanity (leaving right in the middle of a raid is one of my favorites). Surprisingly, there are some guild departures that succeed in severing ties and are unfortunately all-too-common.<br />

If there's one question that comes up time and time again, it's that one. It experienced a launch disaster, lack of content post 35+, bugs, duping, exploits, performance issues, and the sad "parking lot layoffs," yet <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard/"><em>Vanguard: Saga of Heroes</em></a> always seems to generate buzz any time it comes up in conversation.<br />
<br />
There's a certain aura surrounding this game, and even though it languished with low subscription numbers for years, it always seems to attract attention when it's covered at Massively. There's something about <em>Vanguard</em> that kept me playing solidly well past launch and still pulls me back from time to time. I was watching Shrek with my kids the other day, and one of my favorite scenes is Shrek's stroll with Donkey when they first meet. Shrek tries to explain how Ogres are like onions and how both have layers. When you think about it, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> is also like an onion because it has layer after layer of content and features that have stacked up over the years. In fact, some players have argued that there's almost too much to do, particularly at the lower levels.<br />

I have always loved the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> has been willing to try out new ideas over the years, and some of them have been remarkably successful. But there are a few that have gotten lost in the shuffle, while others have ended up directly conflicting with later additions of content. One of the challenges of running a guild is avoiding the emotional peaks and valleys that tend to come up. In fact, one of the scariest times for a guild is when it's just accomplished something big because once the cheers stop, there's a void left and people begin to wonder what's next. It's not uncommon for a guild that's just hit an amazing goal to lose some members shortly after, and in some cases, it can actually lead to a guild withering and drying up because there's a letdown and apathy sets in.<br />

How do you survive the dreaded plateau? When you think of kids and video games, the question that always comes up is this: What are they getting out of playing them? Usually, MMOs, even MMOs aimed at kids, are big on fun but light on learning. So it was refreshing to see teacher <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ben-bertoli">Ben Bertoli</a> launch a <a href="http://kickstarter.com">Kickstarter</a> project to promote development of his personal project <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1367241051/classrealm"><em>ClassRealm</em></a> into what could be a potentially valuable tool in the classroom.<br />

So why haven't we seen more educational MMOs, and why has there been a gap when it comes to technology at home vs. at school? Recently, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/KingsIsle-entertainment/">KingsIsle</a> announced that the world of the Spiral was going to branch out into the high seas in the studio's newest MMO, <a href="http://pirate101.com"><em>Pirate101</em></a>. There are many things about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Pirate101/"><em>Pirate101</em></a> that will feel familiar to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Wizard101/">Wizard101</a></em> fans, but the game has several features that definitely make it stand apart as more than just a sequel. Combat is not card-based; it's more like a tactical board game. Companions, rather than trading cards, play a key role in the pirate arsenal, and of course, players will be traveling (and fighting!) on their very own pirate ships.<br />

What a long way <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> come! If you had said back in 2004 that the game would not only go free-to-play but have microtransactions and emerge largely intact, I probably would have run to get my pitchfork. But here we are in 2012, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> website has a huge green button that says "Play Free" in big letters, with a long list of special deals on station cash and Marketplace items.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I want to look back at the evolution of <em>EQII </em>to see how it successfully transitioned while gauging where it's headed down the road when it comes to its payment model. He's also the author of <a href="http://nostarch.com/guildleader.htm">The Guild Leader's Handbook</a>, which is a must-read for any guild leader. <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> has seen a great deal of new content and features over the past year, and each update tends to generate a lot of buzz about things like new raid zones, new warzones, world events, and yes, even fishing. But there have been quite a few subtle (and not so subtle) changes to the core of the game -- that is, the rifts themselves. Last summer, Justin wrote a great piece <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/enter-at-your-own-rift-are-rifts-in-danger-of-collapsing/">wondering whether rifts were in "danger of collapsing,"</a> and his point was that they were a good idea on paper but needed tweaks in order to stay relevant to the game.<br />

The paint has barely dried on the Skyshrine Update, and already we're hearing tidbits about what's planned for this month. On Thursday, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holly-longdale/">Holly "Windstalker" Longdale</a> announced a few highlights that players can expect to see in the <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/news/article?month=052012&amp;id=51211">May update</a>. The monthly letters are always welcomed by players, and this one announces several changes that should shore up the foundation of the game even more. "More" and "new" are often used when it comes to update announcements, but if you heap too much on the very top, you need to go back and work through some of the older content and features to make sure they can support the burden.<br />

One age-old debate in MMOs revolves around the buying and selling of characters, and the argument becomes especially contentious when it involves the exchange of real-life money. The members of one camp will staunchly defend the practice, saying they put the time and effort into the toons and that those characters are theirs to do with as they please. Others argue the opposite, saying that there are plenty of characters who were given help from others in leveling and acquiring gear, and it's not right to take that collective effort and market it to the highest bidder.<br />
<br />
It's a complicated issue for sure, but it's mainly centered around one single character. But what if it involved an entire guild? That's a question that players have had to tackle recently in <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, as the practice of buying and selling guilds has become more and more popular. Would you buy a guild if you were just starting out? And would you sell your guild if you were done with the game? Quick, what's the <a href="http://esrb.org">ESRB</a> rating symbol of your favorite MMO of choice? And if you know that, what are the content descriptors that account for your game's rating? If you got them right, bravo! According <a href="http://www.esrb.org/about/awareness.jsp">to the ESRB's official poll</a>, 85% of parents with children who play video games are aware of the ratings system. For those not familiar, here's the deal: The Entertainment Software Rating Board began in 1994 with the goal of providing a standard set of ratings and descriptors to help adults choose appropriate games for children.<br />

But the real question is, are ESRB ratings accurate when it comes to MMOs? The poll also claims that 65% of parents regularly check a game's rating before making a purchase, but are those ratings as helpful when choosing an MMO for your children? One of the things I've enjoyed with the new <em><a href="http://www.everquest2.com">EverQuest II</a></em> update is how fun it is to get out there and explore the new zones. The Withered Lands has lots of nooks to check out, like the Holgresh caves up along the cliffs and the ruins just outside the Combine Foothold. As much as I like epic storylines and lofty challenges, sometimes it's fun to just mount up and scout out some really interesting locations.<br />
<br />
GU63, however, really doesn't offer any new content for lower-level players, and it's hard for someone under level 90 to get around the Withered Lands and Skyshrine safely. But one of the reasons there's not much new content at the lower levels is that past updates have added in so much already that there's almost too much to see and do. When you're running a guild, there are lots of clear, right and wrong, cut and dried issues to take on. It might not be easy to carry them out, but it's pretty easy to know what the right decision is. There are some, however, that aren't so clear, and it's hard to even gauge which variables might help reveal the best solution. One of those naggingly difficult areas is knowing when to put your trust in a new member. A good recruitment policy will help filter out bad matches, but at what point do you know that a new member really is a good fit with the guild and can be trusted? As much as I'd like to just say "you'll know it when you see it" and leave it at that, I'd like to touch on a few areas that might come into play as you evaluate new members. In my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/enter-at-your-own-rift-fishin-and-survivin/">last column</a> about <a href="http://www.riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a>, I looked at a few highlights that were coming with Update 1.8, but because of the buzz surrounding the two new skills of fishing and survival, I wanted to delve into both a little more closely and perhaps even give a few tips I picked up so far that might be helpful if you're thinking of giving it a try.<br />

So there I was, watching the server status on the <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> official site on my mobile phone and seeing server after server start to go back online. Game Update 63 officially launched this week, and with it came the much-awaited return of the Skyshrine dragons. But this week happens to be spring vacation week, so as much as I was hoping to see things firsthand, I was out of town and offline as I enjoyed some surprisingly pleasant weather on the beach in New England and in downtown New York City.<br />
<br />
Although I missed launch, I got a feel for some of the new content while it was on Test, plus I had a sneak peek with the recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> tour, so this week I'm going to digest what I saw, pretend that launch hasn't happened yet, and highlight a few things that I'm looking forward to seeing with the patch. Guild-leading can be a very enjoyable and rewarding activity, but it's not always a walk in the park. In many of the columns here and the discussions that follow, the most common theme is how leading guilds is both the best and the toughest role in the game. When things are all falling into place and everyone's clicking, it's extremely satisfying to see it all come together. But when it's not, it can be extremely frustrating and stressful.<br />
<br />
We've often looked at the benefits of running a guild, but in today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">Guild Counsel</a>, let's look at a few areas that can sometimes make guild leadership almost seem not worth it. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-family/">MMO Family</a> column, I want to dig deeper into something that came up as a result of  the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/mmo-family-do-kids-belong-in-guilds/">last edition</a>, and that's the perception of younger gamers as generally being too immature, being too flighty, and lacking the social skills to be fun groupmates and guildmates in our MMOs. There were some great points all around, with some arguing that kids aren't good guildmates because of their age and others even arguing that some kids are more mature than adults.<br />

Let's look at things a little differently this week. Suppose you are guilded or grouped with your son/daughter/little brother/niece/nephew/best friend's kid/etc. You can't blow him off because of your relationship to him or her, so what do you do to make sure he or she isn't that kid who drives everyone crazy in-game? For those gamers who have been patiently waiting to hear about GU63, the past few weeks have been a treat. Over on <a href="http://youtube.com">YouTube</a>, amid the sea of boring, mindless, drivel-filled videos are a few gems that capture worldwide attention and have become iconic. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmtzQCSh6xk">Numa Numa</a>, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg">evolution of dance</a>, and of course, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OBlgSz8sSM">Charlie bit my finger</a> are all so well-known that they've become part of the lexicon. One of the parts of the recent <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> producer's letter that caught my eye was the hint that there will soon be more to do in game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/">besides "stab" stuff</a>. Maybe I'm mellowing in my old age, or perhaps it's because of my inner Bartle explorer player-type, but I'm enjoying activities in MMOs that don't involve mass slaughter all the time. Usually, that means crafting, but the inventory management that's required often leaves me cross-eyed by the time I'm done.<br />

With Update 1.8, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> will add two new skills to the game: fishing and survival. Non-combat activities have already been introduced in past updates, like the wedding instance, but these two new skills look to be fun games within the game, so I was eager to check things out. One thing you just can't say about <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> is that there's a lack of news coming from the game. In fact, there's been so much going on both in game and out that this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> is devoted to a great big roundup. There are some things in life that just go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly, Bert and Ernie, sun and sand, and guilds and embarrassing moments. In fact, one thing that makes guild life so memorable is our collection of those little screw-ups that leave us laughing and wondering what on earth someone was thinking. There are tons of things people do in game that leave them flustered (believe me, I know!), but some go down in history as classic moments of mortification. In my regular columns at Massively, I enjoy taking a look at various topics surrounding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-family/">family-friendly MMOs</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">common issues in guild management</a>. So it seemed natural to take the two subjects and combine them for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/MMO-Family/">MMO Family</a>. Gamers are growing older, and we're seeing an increasing presence of younger players, even in the more serious "adult" games like <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. For those who play MMOs with their children, it might seem reasonable to seek a guild tag for them, but that might not sit well with your guild peers.<br />

As we get closer to April 17th, more and more is being revealed about what's in <em><a href="http://www.everquest2.com">EverQuest II</a>'s</em> Game Update 63. Fortunately, much of it is on the test server, so players can pop in, check things out, and not have to worry about an NDA. I decided to head over, and since I already had a character test copied to the server, I was able to get in and see the new zones and some of the new additions to the game. But what if you're someone who's already a member of a guild? If I had a nickel for every time a guild member thought to himself, "I could do a better job," I'd be able to retire and buy a ticket to <a href="http://www.virgingalactic.com/">fly in space</a>. In some cases, it's just an issue of backseat driving, but in others, there's some merit to that point of view. When is it time to step in and replace the guild leader? Over the past few weeks, <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> has been celebrating its first birthday with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carnival-of-the-Ascended/">Carnival of the Ascended</a>. It started off pleasantly enough, with games, prizes, turducken, and fireworks. But recently, some of the revelers got a little too rowdy, and players had to help subdue drunk and disorderly guests. Now, the event has entered its fourth phase, and the two sides have begun to attack rival outposts that have been set up along parade routes. If you haven't had a chance to check out the Carnival of the Ascended, now is a perfect time. As Massively reported this week, <em><a href="http://everquest2.com">EverQuest II</a></em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/the-skyshrines-the-limit-everquest-ii-delivering-new-update-ap/">Game Update 63</a> is inching closer to going live, and it's bringing some exciting changes. There are new zones, instances, quests, and lots of dragons on the way. For old Velious fans, the return of Skyshrine will be a welcome sight, although there's new danger and turmoil both inside the city as well as through the land that surrounds it. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">The Guild Counsel</a> has explored lots of tips and advice that make running a guild more enjoyable and (hopefully!) more successful. But I'm constantly amazed at the number of players I meet in MMOs who would probably make great leaders and would probably enjoy it but don't give it a try. Making the leap from player to guild leader can be both tempting and daunting, and unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell who will make a good leader and who won't. Plenty of us have come across people who really should not have taken on the guild leader role, but for every bad guild leader, there are probably dozens of good people who could become great leaders if they chose to make the leap.<br />

Granted, there are many who are firmly set on staying away from the role, and that's understandable, but this week's column is devoted to those who are considering stepping forward to lead but aren't sure if they have what it takes. If you've ever gone shopping with kids, you know how much of a nightmare-inducing proposition it can be. Everywhere from toy stores to department stores to seemingly innocuous grocery stores, there's a battle raging between parents and their children, which usually ends with tears, grey hairs, and the infamous word, "Pleeeeeease??" (Pleeeeeease should actually have its own entry in the Oxford Dictionary because it has a completely different meaning from its polite cousin, "please").<br />
<br />
The only thing that helps parents get through it is the knowledge that they get a respite once they get home. Not so anymore, though, because there's a second front that's opened, and the new battleground is taking place on our computer screens. Those high-pitched appeals that echo throughout the store aisles are now filling our family rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms. And while many people are singing the praises of the free-to-play model in MMO games, it's actually the biggest contributor to the begging-battles at home. Every now and then, we hear stories that transcend gaming and prove that there's something more to our pixelated worlds than uber loot and leveling up. Last week, the Guk server (which I proudly have called my home server for the past several years) rallied together to bring some cheer to a young boy with terminal cancer and to his loving family. March is definitely roaring in like a lion for <a href="http://www.everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>. It's launching its new free-to-play program, and it's also celebrating its 13th anniversary with a big bash in game. The good news for guilds these days is that you don't need as many players in order to form a raid and tackle endgame content. However, this is also the bad news because it means guild leaders need to keep a watchful eye on their roster and face the unenviable task of telling certain members they can't be part of the raid on any given night.<br />

Fresh off the launch of its single player game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, 38 Studios has announced the addition of two new members to their team. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-blakely/">John Blakely</a>, who has worked for SOE and Zynga, will become their senior vice president of development, while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-hansen">Mark Hansen</a> has come from LEGO Systems Inc. to take on the role of senior vice president of business operations. It seems like ages ago, but back in July of 2010, <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> shook the MMO world with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-daily-grind-real-id-do-we-finally-have-our-wow-killer/">announcement of RealID</a>. You probably recall the firestorm, but the long and short of it is that Blizzard was planning to make all posts in the forums display each poster's real-life first and last name. The protests against it were so loud that Blizzard backed down from the move and life resumed as usual.<br />

The intend was to integrate social media into Blizzard games, particularly Facebook, but it became a huge can of worms because it forced everyone who wanted to post on the forums to reveal their true names. But social media is continuing to grow, and there are lots of ways that game companies have made use of it. Last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2012/">GDC</a> came at a perfect time for <a href="http://trionworld.com">Trion</a>. The conference overlaps perfectly with <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT's</em></a> one-year anniversary, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/adam-gershowitz/">Producer Adam Gershowitz</a> took us through some highlights of the past year as well as the current Carnival of the Ascended content.
