In my <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> career, I've played two classes far more than any others: the Captain and the Lore-master. Both scratch that "pet class" itch that I have in MMOs, both are quite group-friendly, and both seem to be somewhat unorthodox picks (at least compared to the plague of Hunters and Champions infecting the game).<br />

I'll leave a discussion about Captains for another time, but today I felt like talking about the strangeness that is the Lore-master. It's such a unique class in feel and execution, and it's captivated me such that I'm actually leveling up my second Lore-master because I was dissatisfied with the way I handled my first one.<br />
<br />
Maybe you've never tried one. Maybe you picked one up and just couldn't get a feel for what it was supposed to do. I'll admit that the LM is an acquired taste, partially because its skillset is all over the map and it doesn't settle into an expected template. However, it may just be the coolest class in the game. Klingon Defense Force players who have been crying out for years for a significant update to their unfinished faction will have their prayers answered when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/legacy-of-romulus"><em>Legacy of Romulus</em></a> expansion releases next week. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic</a> <a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/blog/?p=892951">posted a blog</a> telling these gamers that they have not been forgotten but will be vindicated with a complete experience from level 1 to 50.<br />

"It was always promised that if <em>Star Trek Online</em> was ever going to add a third faction, we would make sure that Klingons would get expanded content first (or at the same time). With <em>Legacy of Romulus</em> adding Romulans as a playable faction, it was a matter of honor that the Klingons get their own content from level 1 to 50," Cryptic wrote.<br />
<br />
The devs give slight spoilers to the new, reworked, and revised content that Klingons will be experiencing, such as how players will get their first starship and what iconic locations they'll be visiting (hint: a certain prison planet from Star Trek VI will come into play). While we won't get to see it in action until the game makes the transition on June 12th, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Trion-Worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> <a href="http://forums.riftgame.com/rift-general-discussions/general-discussion/358993-wip-first-look-rift-store.html">has posted a screenshot</a> of the new item store and some of its offerings for players to peruse.<br />

The store screenshot includes a preview pane of a character wearing a fancy outfit and a top hat, as well as a list of several items. These include 30-day patron pass, faction changing scroll, character rename scroll, rename guild scroll, transfiguration bauble, rune unsocketing apparatus, and planar essence removal device. Later on in the thread, the studio <a href="http://forums.riftgame.com/rift-general-discussions/general-discussion/358993-wip-first-look-rift-store-5.html#post4247518">posted a picture of a different cosmetic outfit</a> being worn by a female character.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars 1</em></a> has seen the end of an era of live development today, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a> <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/players/">stated that it is switching the game over to automation</a>. The studio said that players should not expect any further content other than the systems being put into place to keep the game running on auto-pilot for the foreseeable future.<br />

"Over time, our focus has shifted to updates that not only help maintain <em>Guild Wars</em> but help the game maintain itself," ArenaNet posted. "With this focus in mind, we'll no longer be releasing any new content for the live game except in support of automation. Our goal is to get the game to a place where it can continue to run and be available to all of our fans. We have a lot of love for <em>Guild Wars </em>-- it's the game that made us what we are today -- and we want to continue sharing it with everyone!"<br />
<br />
Tournaments, events, and birthday prizes will be moved over to automation during this transition. With early access to <em><a href="https://marvelheroes.com">Marvel Heroes</a></em> coming on May 28th and the actual launch a few days later on June 4th, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gazillion-entertainment">Gazillion</a> team is on super-high alert. CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-brevik">David Brevik</a> talked with us about the final additions that the team is putting in place, saying that most of the features are complete at this point.<br />
<br />
Brevik most wanted to talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/marvel-heroes/"><em>Marvel Heroes'</em></a> endgame. Interestingly enough, the main PvE story will take your character only about halfway to the level 60 cap. After that, Gazillion expects players to fully rely on a robust endgame to finish the journey.<br />
<br />
The endgame is made up of three primary PvE activities (in addition to PvP): daily missions, group challenges, and survival challenges. Daily missions, which can be soloed or done in a group, are unlocked in a chain. The five-man group challenges only have a single entry at this point, although there are several variations on that challenge. Then the survival challenges can take groups of 10 to 15 players and pit them against waves of increasingly difficult foes. Difficulty for these wave battles can be lowered by grabbing shards and defeating enemies, and depending on how well your team performs, the boss could be a pushover or insanely tough. Gazillion is placing a premium on randomness and variety to keep things fresh, so don't expect all similar-looking mobs to actually be the same!<br />

"This is going to be the best game most of us have built in our lives," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine Studios</a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a> said bluntly.<br />

The game in question, of course, is <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/"><em>WildStar</em></a>, and it represents Gaffney's 10th or so trip through the beta development chute on the way to release. There's an undeniable note of pride and calm confidence in his voice as he talks about the baby that's growing inside Carbine's womb right now, and he was definitely not shy in opening up about all of the decisions and work the team's made as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> heads into its second trimester... er, closed beta test.<br />
<br />
Before that, however, Gaffney provided a recap of the first closed beta test. He said that it was pretty limited, with only 2,000 players testing out the lowbie Exile zones. The team moved some of the elder game content down in level so that people could test it out, and developers spent some time doing impromptu Q&amp;A sessions with players in the field. As a result, Carbine is ready to shift over to the Dominion side and greatly expand the beta in size and content. OK, so the good news is that <em>Kingdom Under Fire II </em>has been scheduled for a 2013 launch. Unfortunately, the bad news is that so far this release will be limited to Southeast Asia at first. Apparently developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blueside/">BlueSide</a> wants to see the game in action in that region first before rolling it out elsewhere.<br />

The title is a combination of action-RPG and real-time strategy, promises battlefields with "thousands" of soldiers fighting at once, and will be launching on the PC and PlayStation 3.<br />

I've had a strange start with <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, to be honest. While I did get in on the 25th with the early-early crowd, shortly thereafter I had to boogie on off to a vacation that canceled out eight days of soft launch gaming time. So even though I got an early start, I'm probably behind many of you -- even those who started on the 30th.<br />
<br />
That's OK; I'm not in a rush. I'm not the type to get into a speed race or feel the compulsion to become an instant expert by the end of week one. My experience so far has been feeling out what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> has to offer, mostly by going through the solo quest line, participating in skirmishes, and queuing up for dungeon runs when time permits. And I'm enjoying myself so far, although I still have that "slightly lost" feeling that comes with exploring a brand-new MMO. I need to learn how to create Foundry missions and I haven't even touched professions yet.<br />
<br />
Maybe you're like me. Maybe you assume that everyone already knows the ins and outs of the game as though he's been playing it for years, while you're an ignorant noob wandering the streets. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/animation/">Character animations</a> seem to be only noticed when they don't come off right. It's often a matter of subjective opinion whether or not these animations are pleasing or jarring, of course, but the fact remains that animations that don't meet players' standards are the target of long, long-winded rants.<br />
<br />
I try to give credit where credit is due. MMOs that show off fluid, good-looking animations are deserving of praise. For me, the litmus test is whether or not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jumping/">a game can portray jumping</a> in a natural way. That's harder than you'd think; I've seen so many titles that have characters jumping with stiff spines, awkward arm angles, or the grace of a boiled squash.<br />
<br />
So instead of lambasting games for bad animations, let's focus on those that pull off natural- and good-looking animations today. Seriously, it's going to be tough for some of you to put a lid on the negativity, but I believe in you. Which game has the best character animations?<br />

First of all, I wish my first name were a cool animal. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bear-mccreary">Bear McCreary</a> has that on me, so it seems unfair that he's also a geek icon for his work on several beloved TV series (Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, The Walking Dead). And now the guy is composing the soundtrack of one of this spring's hottest MMOs? Where did I go wrong with my life?<br />
<br />
Before I go and change my name to Sugar Glider Olivetti, I guess it's only fair that I put a lid on my hurt ego to give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/defiance/"><em>Defiance's</em></a> score a fair listen. McCreary was tapped to create the music for both the MMO and the TV series, giving the crossover project a unified sound.<br />
<br />
"I had to make sure that players could hang out in one area for long stretches of time without getting bored by repetitive music," <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/#blog/albums/defiance-video-game/">McCreary wrote on his blog</a>. "As a result, melody plays less of a role throughout many of these cues. The real stars of this music are the texture and colors."<br />

With all of the glamor and glitter, fashion and fame coming to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> these days, it must either be a Jem and the Holograms expansion or <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/news/blog/20130514">Game Update 2.1: Customization</a>. It's the patch that says that it's OK to be a vain, preening peacock as long as you're saving a galaxy far, far away, and it's totally live, like, right now.<br />

Update 2.1 includes new dye modules, a collection interface, name changes an appearance editor, and the option to play as a member of the Cathar race.<br />

During <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/ncsoft-sales-down-from-last-quarter-up-from-last-year/">the most recent NCsoft earnings call</a>, there was a slightly surprising statement regarding a possible expansion for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. An <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a> rep sent Massively an email to clarify what the publisher is thinking in regards to the future of <em>GW2</em>. The statement reads as follows:

<blockquote class="bq-standard">"In regards to your recent post on a <em>Guild Wars 2</em> expansion, there is a slight misunderstanding when interpreting the answer from the NCsoft earnings call. We are considering an expansion, but we are taking a wait-and-see stance. We are evaluating the performance of the game and deciding on when would be the best time to launch an expansion. But right now, our living story approach is very successful in keeping players engaged with new and exciting content. Launching boxed expansions are a great way to package content, but if we can do this on a more regular basis, something we've been doing since launch, it provides players with new content to explore and experience every time they log into the game."</blockquote>

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Trion-Worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> has just announced that fantasy MMO <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a></em> will be headed free-to-play on June 12th. Though former studio reps were once adamant that the game would remain a subscription MMO, the team has apparently decided it can better compete in a F2P world by being F2P. The hybrid model will include an optional sub with fully free content like dungeons and questing; consumables, cosmetics, and even gear will make up the cash shop.<br />

If you love to hate on browser-based MMOs and feel as though their time has passed, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/189627/PC_browser_games_going_away_Not_in_China_apparently.php">China might like to have a word or two with you</a>. Sales of browser-based titles in the country have risen substantially in the past two years, increasing 46% in 2011 and 35% in 2012 according to a Taiwanese games company president, whereas client-based MMOs only made a 13% increase in growth in 2012.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.xpec.com/">XPEC's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aaron-hsu/">Aaron Hsu</a> said that the figures showed that browser games are far from finished in the region: "I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but the browser game market in mainland China is just booming. It's just like the MMORPG market in 2003, for China. I feel like the Chinese developers have created a new business model for browser games there."<br />
<br />
Due to the success of several lucrative browser games, Chinese developers are actively pursuing the browser -- not mobile -- platform. <a href="http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/quarterly.aspx">A recent earnings report</a> suggests that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft's</a> sales have slipped from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013, although the studio is quick to point out that the showing was "solid" particularly when compared to sales from a year ago. While sales were down 35% and net income was down 49% from the last quarter, sales were up 31% and net income was up 322% year-over-year.<br />
<br />
 <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> accounted for 21% of sales in the first quarter, in addition to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/blade-and-soul"><em>Blade and Soul's</em></a> 9%, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> 16%, and the usual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage"><em>Lineage</em></a> cavalcade (<em>Lineage 1</em> represented 38% of sales alone with its subscriptions).<br />
<br />
While 64% of NCsoft's sales were in Korea, only 13% were in North America and 8% in Europe. The decrease in NA and EU contributions was due to "the reduction in <em>Guild Wars 2</em> package sales," according to the report. All of NCsoft's subsidiaries posted drops in sales from last quarter except for NC Taiwan.<br />

[Update: Also of note in the earnings call is the news that NCsoft's Nah Seong Chan says the company is "<a href="http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/05/12/ncsoft-is-preparing-a-guild-wars-2-expansion/">preparing an expansion pack</a>" but has yet to decide when it might launch. Is there a light at the end of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo III's</em></a> auction house woes? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> is putting its best foot forward in an attempt to make it so. After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/08/diablo-iii-gold-dupe-bug-fixed-with-no-rollback/">a nasty gold duping exploit</a> and the subsequent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/diablo-iii-auction-house-down-for-at-least-another-24-hours/">suspension of all services</a>, the <em>Diablo III</em> auction house is back online -- and Blizzard is looking to save face with its return.<br />
<br />
Production Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-hight">John Hight</a> <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/8796520380">gave a lengthy explanation</a> of what happened with the situation and why Blizzard responded the way it did. "Only a relatively small number of players had the billions of gold necessary to exploit the bug, and only 415 of those players chose to use this exploit for personal gain," Hight wrote. "We elected not to roll back the servers in the Americas and are instead working to remove duplicated gold from the economy through targeted audits and account actions (as indicated above) without taking away progress that our players rightfully earned."<br />
<br />

Reader Andrew is quite impressed with the look of <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, saying that it is visually "amazing!" Without descending into hyperbole, I have to agree. It's a good-looking title with plenty of interesting details if you take the time to stop and smell the corpses.<br />

Corpses? Well, Andrew is standing in the middle of a whole bunch of dead folks here with his spectral flashlight (AA batteries not included). I wouldn't touch that treasure chest if I were you, Andrew. I'm guessing it might be a mimic. Oh no!<br />

My loathing of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/elves/">Elves</a> is not only <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/the-perfect-ten-why-elves-are-the-scourge-of-mmos/">well-documented here on Massively</a>, but stretches back to my childhood. I've just never liked them, period. Maybe it's because they're the preppie cool kids in my mind's John Hughes movie, or maybe it's their incredible haughty arrogance and froofy love of flowerwear. In any case, I don't like them, I don't play them, and I feel perfectly fine wishing all manner of humiliating harm upon them. After all, they're pretend and that makes it OK, right?<br />

So in the tongue-in-cheek spirit of imaginary racism, which pretend species makes your skin crawl in MMOs? Can you not abide by Dwarves no matter what? Do Gnomes irk you? Snow-covered zones aren't exactly new to <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, but the upcoming region of Wildermore is a little bit different than the normal Misty Mountain ski resorts. How so? Well, for one thing, it's not supposed to be snowy at all. So what's up with the premature winter in this area of Rohan -- and what are you, the player, going to do about it?<br />
<br />
That's the basic setup for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/update-11/">Update 11: Treachery of the White Hand</a>. The update, which should be going live next week, is what I call the intermission zone: It's the region that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> adds between expansions to keep veteran players from bouncing off the walls due to boredom. Lothlorien, Enedwaith, and the Great River are past intermission zones, but Wildermore might be the most fascinating one yet.<br />

Thanks to technical issues, I wasn't able to get a first-hand tour of the new region. Considering how long <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/"><em>Allods Online</em></a> was launched-but-not-officially-launched, we think it's slightly inaccurate to acknowledge <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato/">gPotato's</a> claim that this is the title's second anniversary. Still, <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2013/05/09/join-the-allods-online-anniversary-extravaganza/">any excuse for a party, right</a>? As the Flame and Frost living story in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> draws to a close, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is gearing up for the next step of its story delivery system. Starting on May 14th, the team will be enticing players to return to Southsun Cove, the location of the controversial <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lost-shores/">Lost Shores</a> event.<br />
<br />
 <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/living-world-pivot-point/">A new dev blog</a> on the official site outlines what the team is looking to do with the living story: "May represents a transition: The Flame and Frost arc is now complete, and our plan calls for content to build on what came before while also kicking things off in a new direction. With that in mind, Team Spring Break first focused on the essentials: characters, story, and gameplay."<br />
<br />
In this first chapter of the new living story, players will team up with Inspector Ellen Kiel of the Lionguard as she and her allies address a tense situation between the settlers and the Consortium. Hark! Is that a new update for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> on the horizon? It is indeed, my chums. And with any fresh <em>LotRO </em>patch comes an expected slew of developer diaries.<br />
<br />
Today we have two dev diaries to report about for players getting ready for next week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Update-11/">Update 11</a>. The first talks about the next addition to the epic story, <a href="http://www.lotro.com/en/game/articles/update-11-volume-iii-book-10-quest-notes">Volume III, Book 10</a>. The diary discusses the 15-chapter storyline as well as the optional "interlude" Ranger episodes that may be played in sequence or out of order. There's even a funny behind-the-scenes moment when the devs show how badly they messed up an NPC model.<br />
<br />
Then there's a diary on what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> is calling "<a href="http://www.lotro.com/en/game/articles/mounted-combat-20-tale-problems-solutions">Mounted Combat 2.0</a>." Sweeping changes are coming to mounted combat with Update 11, including retooling the movement tree into a class-specific one, the addition of more class-specific skills, and a ton of polish and iteration.<br />

Even with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/syfy/">Syfy</a> doing a happy dance <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/syfy-touts-defiance-premiere-numbers/">over Defiance's premiere numbers</a>, there's been a cloud of doubt hovering over the show's survival. Because, well, this is Syfy. We've never quite forgiven the channel for canceling Farscape in favor of Octosharkasaurus vs. Mecha-Piranhadon. But it looks as though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/defiance/">the MMO's</a> sibling has received an extension of life, <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/syfys-defiance-renewed-for-second-season/">as Syfy renewed it for a second season</a>.<br />
<br />
Syfy President of Original Content Mark Stern had these words of encouragement at the news: "Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been an incredible team effort. We couldn't ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds">Trion Worlds</a>. We can't wait to see where they take us in the second season."<br />
<br />

Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/naoki-yoshida/">Naoki Yoshida</a> has a couple of significant announcements concerning the testing and release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV:</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/a-realm-reborn/"><em>A Realm Reborn</em></a>. He's excited to announce that the relaunch of the title will be happening in "summer 2013," with a more specific date to be announced by the end of May. He also said that details and pre-orders for the collector's edition will be coming this month as well.<br />
<br />
"The whole team has been working at full throttle to ensure the game will be ready for a summer release," Yoshida said. "It won't be long before you can mark your calendars and begin the final countdown!"<br />
<br />
Before the launch happens, however, phase 3 of beta testing needs to happen. This will start at the beginning of June, according to Yoshida. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/atlantica-online/"><em>Atlantica Online</em></a> is in the middle of a three-patches-in-three-months cycle right now, starting with Awakening, moving on to Ascension, and finishing up with Judgment.  <a href="http://atlantica.nexon.net/Atlantis/Ascension">The Ascension patch has gone live</a> with a host of additional content for the game including the journey to West Atlantis.<br />
<br />
The new zone of West Atlantis is a former technological haven turned centaur refuge and offers plenty of mysteries and adventures for the daring player. It's there that teams can tackle the Centaur Hero raid dungeon and hire a new merc named Chironia.<br />
<br />
Other changes that have come with the Ascension patch include an increased level cap to 160, the Transcendent Temple dungeon, and an array of new talents. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> got a tiny surprise for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> players today: <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/module1">a teaser page for its module 1 update</a>. The studio posted a splash page featuring a mystical forest with the phrase "They would seize from the moon the way to ruin and riches" floating above it.<br />

 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/20/massively-exclusive-neverwinter-pre-launch-interview-part-two/">In an interview with Massively</a> a few weeks ago, Lead Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/andy-velasquez/">Andy Velasquez</a> acknowledged that the team was hard at work on this update even before <em>Neverwinter </em>went into open beta: "For the rest of the team, they've spent the last couple of weeks working on the first update which will come out a couple of months after the launch."<br />
<br />
Cryptic says that more details on module 1 are coming soon, but in the meanwhile, why don't we engage in a fun round of speculation as to what this update could be?<br />

If you know me, you probably know that I have a weird fascination with alternate history. You know, the daydreams of historians when they're not rewriting the past to suit the latest trends. "What if?" my mind wonders, especially when it comes to MMOs.<br />
<br />
You see, for every game that actually makes it to launch, there are several that die gasping and alone in the bowels of development hell. Sure, many of these are pathetic creatures that didn't really stand a chance anyway, but there are some that could have made an impact on the industry if they had reached release and been halfway decent. We'll never know what a world would look like with these games in them, but we can always muse, "What if?"<br />

The newly titled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arcane-saga/"><em>Arcane Saga</em></a> represents a reworking of <em>Prius'</em> old content to include new features and content.<br />

 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netmarble/">Netmarble</a> Head Project Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-kim">Joe Kim</a> invites you to check out the changes: "With the start of the beta phase today, players will finally get to experience for themselves all of the improvements we've made to the world of Prius over the past year."<br />

Assuming all goes well in the beta, <em>Arcane Saga </em>is scheduled to launch in the next couple of months. The secret is out and can't be shoved back in the box: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/RuneScape-3/"><em>RuneScape 3</em></a> is coming. Of course, we already knew that, but there was a time not so long ago that the world was ignorant of this fact. If you wondered how the global reveal of this title went for those who were there, then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex/">Jagex</a> has a neat behind-the-scenes video showing how and what the press saw when the studio went live with the info.<br />

In addition to the pomp and circumstance of the event, the team also used the video to reveal the first new skill of the game: Divination. What does it do? Well, the devs were not as keen to share that. Speculate away!<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is cracking down on player-created missions <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?196582-Exploit-Maps-What-s-the-deal-Who-gets-punished">that utilize certain exploits</a> to gain XP <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?205661-New-best-exp-in-the-game-Is-this-an-Exploit-2-3-levels-hr">faster than normal</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter's</em></a> Foundry. While the studio temporarily banned authors for making these missions in the Foundry, it looks as though <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?201931-Patch-Notes-NW-1-20130416a-16">a recent patch</a> has addressed the situation by "tweaking" the amount of XP that a player can gain within a set period of time.<br />
<br />
Apparently some Foundry authors had been creating missions designed to pay out the maximum amount of XP by allowing near-nonstop combat. The patch has slowed that rate down by allowing players to earn only so much XP in five minutes before turning off the XP spigot altogether until the time limit is up.<br />
<br />
Players have been reacting <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?204491-Foundry-Nerfs">to the Foundry nerf</a> <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?206821-Petition-Bring-back-Foundry-EXP">with dismay</a>, particularly <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?203581-Worried-about-XP-nerf-IOW-quot-Why-we-can-t-have-nice-things-quot-%29">non-exploit-using authors</a> who feel as though they are being punished with the rest of the class by the XP nerfs (though "legit" farming maps appear to have escaped deletion so far). <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?203581-Worried-about-XP-nerf-IOW-quot-Why-we-can-t-have-nice-things-quot-%29&amp;p=2767322&amp;viewfull=1#post2767322">One player noted</a> called this situation an "endless cat and mouse game" that has happened in other similar systems.<br />

If there's one staple that MMOs share with other video games, it's that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/combat/">fighting</a> tends to be a mostly bloodless and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gore">gore-free</a> affair. Sure, sometimes a daring game might throw in blood fireworks that erupt in the air to signify that you're doing some damage, but you and your enemy will appear in model health until one of you keels over from invisible wounds.<br />
<br />
Of course, as time progresses and technology gives us terrific marvels, there's the potential for games to start showing more and more wounds on our characters. It kind of reminds me how there used to be action figures with the main selling point that you could transform them into disfigured, gory versions as they took "battle damage."<br />
<br />

You know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/city-of-steam-open-beta-early-admission-starts-may-10/">the special beta keys</a> that you needed to access the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a> test? Yeah, well, you don't need them any longer. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> has decided to drop the key concept in order to open up the beta to everyone. So starting on May 10th, anyone who has an interest in checking out this steampunk MMO may do so with no hassle.<br />
<br />
The upcoming beta test will be continuous and will feature an improved tutorial, events, wiliderness levels, and the Massively-approved technique of jumping. The team also removed the old faction system and teased the possibility of a MOBA-like addition to the game.<br />

Misery loves company, they say (look it up), but will people actually go seeking it? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games</a> hopes players will, as it has introduced the Misery 85-ton 'mech into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a>. The metal beast has an armament that includes plenty of lasers, a Gauss rifle, and an SRM-6 (again, look it up).<br />
<br />
The new update goes beyond the debut of the Misery. There are four additional trial 'mechs to test out, color customization for Hero 'mechs, and a crazy Buccaneer premium pattern.<br />

When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/06/lotro-update-11-brings-five-new-areas-on-may-13/">Update 11</a> drops next week, it will open the paths to a brand-new zone: Wildermore. While it's part of the Wold, Wildermore is definitely unlike anything seen in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/riders-of-rohan/"><em>Riders of Rohan</em></a>; for starters, the area is inexplicably covered in snow and jagged ice crystals.<br />
<br />
So what's up with this area? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine's</a> developers have put together a video to introduce the zone and explain the main storyhook behind it. It appears that Saruman has fused an ancient relic with a giant, creating a nasty foe that will be the main antagonist as players travel through Wildermore. Don't fret, as there are good guys as well attempting to fight the snow powers that be.<br />

After my so-so review of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/01/jukebox-heroes-the-burning-crusades-soundtrack/"><em>The Burning Crusade's</em> score</a> a few months ago, I'm sure a few of you thought I was barking mad. <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> is well-known for great orchestra pieces, but I stick by saying that most of the brilliant stuff stayed the heck away from Outland. Fortunately, the sound quality got a lot better when we went up north for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> in 2008.<br />
<br />
The score was composed and arranged by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/russell-brower">Russell Brower</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/derek-duke">Derek Duke</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-uelmen">Matt Uelmen</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neal-acree">Neal Acree</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/glenn-stafford">Glenn Stafford</a>. As to be expected by that name sandwich, the score features a lot of variety. While there are epic chants and the like that are to be expected from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a>, there's also a lonely, savage feel to the music that represents these far-off lands. There's also a lot of blowing wind that segues between tracks if you listen to the album straight through, and if that doesn't make you envision a snow-blasted landscape, I don't know what would.<br />
<br />
The liner notes say that "this is the music of ice and despair, a dirge and a call to arms." I couldn't put it better myself.
