<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> is counting down the days until its next major update, Chapter V: Fires of Shadowforge, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> is throwing five exciting events to pep up its playerbase during the wait. <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/news,id2924,big_five.html">The Big Five</a>, as the company is calling it, is currently at the halfway mark as its third event that will take place over the holiday weekend.<br />
<br />
From May 25th through May 29th, <em>Runes of Magic</em> players can visit the Helping Hands in one of several locations in the game to get an incredible buff. This two-hour buff will boost experience, talent point, and rare loot gain for all who accept it. Players can receive the buff once a day for the duration of the event.<br />
<br />
The highlight of Chapter V is most definitely the addition of a pair of new classes: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/runes-of-magic-shows-off-the-new-champion-and-warlock/">the Champion and the Warlock</a>. Also coming with Chapter V are the playable Shadowforge Dwarves, a new starter zone, and additional high-level instances. The update will release on June 12th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/runes-of-magic-weekend-event-psyches-players-up-for-chapter-v/">Runes of Magic weekend event psyches players up for Chapter V</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> disaster continues to unfold today, as the troubled studio laid off its entire staff and <a href="http://kotaku.com/5913102/rumor-38-studios-shutting-down-big-huge-games">may be selling off</a> its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a> division in Boston. <a href="http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/18612371/2012/05/24/report-38-studios-no-longer-paying-workers-could-close-by-weekend">Boston's Fox 25 News</a> speculates that the studio may close by this weekend.<br />
<br />
38 Studios CM <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/charles-dane">Charles Dane</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/cmdane/status/205761811981680642">confirmed being laid off</a> on Twitter: "Now on the market. I had an awesome run with 38 Studios, but this dream is now ending."<br />
<br />
Word is that the company is also selling its subsidiary, Big Huge Games. Big Huge Games is the maker of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, 38 Studios' single-player prequel to its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO. This would not be the first time that Big Huge Games was sold by its parent company, as the studio experienced the same event back in 2009.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/curt.schilling.56">Oh his Facebook page</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> stressed that <em>Reckoning </em>did quite well in sales. "I wanted to clear up some misinformation around 38 Studios' first product, <em>Reckoning</em>. Sales of <em>Reckoning</em> outperformed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA's</a> expectations and sold more than 1.2 million units in the game's first 90 days in the market."<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update]:</strong> Developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-shwayder">Ryan Shwayder</a> has also confirmed the layoffs via his <a href="http://www.nerfbat.com/2012/05/24/38-studios-what-a-journey/">personal blog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">38 Studios lays off entire staff, sells Big Huge Games [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. While 38 Studios <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-appears-to-be-getting-no-new-help/">remains in dire straits</a>, fans are getting a bittersweet treat of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> reveals. It's sweet because we've been dying to see more information on this game, but bitter because its fate is still up in the air.<br />
<br />
Today fan site <a href="http://www.38watch.com/forums/showthread.php?2786-You-guys-deserve-this">38 Watch</a> posted a trio of official-looking screens straight from Copernicus' world. In the screens, three races are revealed: the human-looking Almain, the dwarven Dverga, and the orcish Jottun. The game's art style and lush color palette are on full display, opting for more of a stylized than realistic approach.<br />
<br />
We recently heard that Project Copernicus <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">has a possible June 2013 launch window</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/new-flythrough-video-previews-project-copernicus/">got our first look at the game</a> in a flyby video. You can scope out the new screens in the gallery below.<br />

Curious how the makers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT </em></a>are going to turn a two-faction game into a three-faction PvP brawl? Us too! But <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds">Trion Worlds</a> has a few clever ideas to capitalize on the best elements of PvP innovation and evolution with its upcoming Conquest system.<br />
<br />
"With Conquest we're really trying to capture the essence of open-world PvP gameplay," shares Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/william-fisher">William Fisher</a> in a <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/media/videos/conquest/">new developer video</a>. "This is where realities collide." He goes on to say that this new system isn't Defiants against Guardians, but instead three brand-new factions from across the planes duking it out with player assistance.<br />
<br />
Check out the new video after the jump, and when you're done with that, catch up with our very own Karen Bryan's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/enter-at-your-own-rift-conquest/">hands-on experience</a> with the Conquest system!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/rift-conquest-video-boasts-this-is-where-realities-collide/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RIFT Conquest video boasts 'this is where realities collide'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/rift-conquest-video-boasts-this-is-where-realities-collide/">RIFT Conquest video boasts 'this is where realities collide'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 21:30:00 EST. While it's easy to get caught up in the big picture side of the development process, we risk overlooking the smaller but crucial work that goes into gluing the game together. One of these tasks is the naming of the world and all that lies within it. Content Designer <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/author/annie-vandermeer">Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda</a> wrote an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> blog post about the challenges and decisions that went <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/whats-in-a-name-annie-vandermeer-mitsoda-on-naming-tyria">with labeling everything under the sun</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Mitsoda said that the team has established a system for nailing down names. After coming up with the name, the team sends the moniker through a "sanity check" that makes sure it's not too hard to spell or say. The team also tries to weed out the more obscure or overt pop culture references, then passes along the names to the team's "loremasters," who check it against an internal wiki for consistency.<br />

She goes on to share a few anecdotes about the naming process, such as the evolution of Charr names, the difficulty of putting a label on an animal that has no Earth equivalent, and how the creepy rat-dog Murellow got its name. It's an interesting read into a different side of the development process that often goes unnoticed, so check it out!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/arenanet-talks-about-naming-guild-wars-2s-world/">ArenaNet talks about naming Guild Wars 2's world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 15:30:00 EST. "Hey you!" hisses a voice from a nearby dark alley. "How would you like to be a game designer for a day? It'll just cost you one kidney!"<br />
<br />
"Well golly, mister," you reply, stepping into the shadows. "I have two of those, and I've always wanted to try my hand at fixing everything that's wrong with the industry, starting with the snow zone in <em>Mutant Hamsters Online</em>. The pixel shading for the Blue Spruce trees has never been right..."<br />
<br />
"I'll let you make a class. Just one class," the voice interrupts. "And you get unlimited snack bar access."<br />
<br />
"Deal!" you exclaim. "Now where do you want this kidney?"<br />
<br />
Believe it or not, that could happen to you! But let's hope it doesn't and instead let's engage in hypothetical daydreaming: If you could design a class for your MMO, what would it be?<br />

Whenever you get really into a new hobby, it's natural to want to blab about it to anyone who drifts into your gravitational field. That's why we all talk about MMOs, right? It's also why any friends, family members, and coworkers have had to put up with excited rambling about my discovered love for Geocaching.<br />
<br />
Some of you probably know Geocaching, as it's been around for over a decade now. For those of you who haven't, it's a worldwide treasure hunt that involves over a million and a half "caches" of various sizes that are hidden and then marked with GPS coordinates. Players head to the official site or one of the open-source projects to get the coordinates and go hunting for them. There's a useful t<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=-4VFeYZTTYs">wo-minute introduction to this hobby on YouTube</a> if you're curious.<br />
<br />
I noted on our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/massively-speaking/">Massively Speaking</a> podcast that Geocaching has a lot in common with MMOs: Both encourage questing and exploration, both have treasure to be found, and both plug you into a community of adventurers. Listener Terrence heard this and send in an email with an interesting revelation that ties these two hobbies even closer together, as a game developer brought his online world to a real-world location.<br />
<br />

We've been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/diablo-iii-players-report-eruption-of-hacked-accounts/">the mass reports</a> of hackers bypassing passwords and authenticators to rob <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> accounts blind, and now we have a new twist on the story. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard </a><a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619664?page=13#242">confirmed</a> "an increase in reports of individual account compromises," <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846?page=29#571">the studio says</a> it has no hard evidence that hackers have found a way to skirt around the authentication system.<br />
<br />
Community Manager <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846?page=29#571">Bashiok</a> said that the company is taking the claims "extremely seriously" and is investigating the rash of account compromises. "Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person's account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password," he said. "While the authenticator isn't a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand."<br />
<br />
Blizzard is assisting compromised customers by restoring stolen items and rolling back their accounts. The studio <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846">has a post up on its forums</a> to help players protect their accounts and get assistance if theft occurs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/blizzard-denies-diablo-iii-authenticator-hacking-claims/">Blizzard denies Diablo III authenticator hacking claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. Turn over the engine and light up the jet thrusters because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/259-operation-inception">is stomping into closed beta</a> this week. Anyone who registers on the official site has a chance to check out the hot 'mech action before the rest of the crowd. While the beta is currently limited to North America, <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/260-operation-clarification">there is no IP blocking</a>, so anyone can jump in as long as he or she doesn't mind a little lag.<br />
<br />
Perhaps of more interest is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games'</a> announcement of its founder's program, code-named <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/259-operation-inception">Operation Inception</a>. Yes, we guess the devs saw the movie too. While <em>MWO</em> will be free-to-play with optional microtransactions, Operation Inception lets players invest their money up-front to get special goodies and an early start to the game.<br />
<br />
Players can buy into the founder's program starting June 19th. It will come in two tiers: a $30 veteran package and a $60 elite package. The veteran package includes $40 of in-game currency, a month of premium account status, a founder's tag, and early access. The elite package includes $80 of in-game currency, two months of premium status, the founder's tag, early access, and an exclusive BattleMech.<br />
<br />
Early access for <em>MechWarrior Online </em>begins July 17th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/mechwarrior-online-announces-closed-beta-and-founders-program/">MechWarrior Online announces closed beta and founder's program</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/spacetime-studios-teases-arcane-legends/">While we knew it was coming</a>, it is still nice <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/content.php?416-Arcane-Legends">to get official confirmation</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spacetime-studios/">Spacetime Studios</a> has announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arcane-legends/"><em>Arcane Legends</em></a>, its latest MMO for iOS, Android, and Chrome.<br />
<br />
With <em>Arcane Legends</em>, Spacetime Studios is going back to its fantasy roots. Instead of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pocket-legends/"><em>Pocket Legends'</em></a> more traditional MMO combat, however, <em>Arcane Legends</em> will feature action combat full of combos and button-mashing. During the combat, a rage meter will allow players to activate powerful abilities when it's completely full.<br />
<br />
The three classes announced for the game are the Warrior, Rogue, and Sorcerer. <em>Arcane Legends</em> will support both co-op and PvP gameplay.<br />
<br />
CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gary-gattis">Gary Gattis</a> thinks that <em>Arcane Legends</em> is different enough from previous Spacetime endeavors to justify its development: "With every Legends title we are focused on bringing something distinct to cross-platform gaming. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Massively Speaking Episode </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">202 </span>is hot at the scene of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> disaster, and without hyperbole we can say that this is more tragic than Pompeii, the Titanic, and Showgirls combined. Will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling/">Curt Schilling's</a> dream team survive this financial crisis? We brought expert analyst Eliot Lefebvre on the podcast to give us his opinion.<br />

You read that headline right: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> will be introducing player starbases in its upcoming Season 6. For the first time in the game, fleets will be able to band together to build a virtual home in the icy blackness of space.<br />
<br />
The project was spearheaded by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> Lead Artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-mattson/">Jeremy Mattson</a>, who was given the task of conceptualizing and designing this core feature of the path. Mattson sent us an exclusive developer diary to take us through this process, starting with his examination of starbases in Star Trek's canon all the way through the construction and finished product.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/exclusive-star-trek-online-season-6-reveal-fleet-starbases/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exclusive Star Trek Online Season 6 reveal: Fleet starbases</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/exclusive-star-trek-online-season-6-reveal-fleet-starbases/">Exclusive Star Trek Online Season 6 reveal: Fleet starbases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 13:30:00 EST. MMOs have to make money; that's a fact of life (and of business) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mike-obrien">Mike O'Brien</a> knows quite well. <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2012/05/21/guild-wars-2-interview-monetization/#s:guildwars2-16">In an interview with VentureBeat</a>, O'Brien explained how the studio is handling the monetization for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and blasts RMT companies for their practices.<br />
<br />
O'Brien addressed why <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is being offered not as a straight free-to-play title but as a retail product with an up-front cost. "The answer is we're really focused on creating the highest-quality MMO, not the lowest-cost MMO," he replied. "I think <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>is one of the best values in gaming, period. Where else can you get this many hours of enjoyment, of content, of polish, of replayability, for $60?"<br />
<br />
He also took the opportunity to expand upon his own blog post covering microtransactions from a few weeks ago. "Creating a microtransaction system that doesn't upset or alienate your player base is straightforward, once you clearly define what's in-bounds and what's out-of-bounds," O'Brien stated. He says that ArenaNet wants to be "open and honest" with players regarding the in-game store options and promises that these will be "non-essential additions to the game and convenience services" only.<br />
<br />
O'Brien also had strong words about the shady practices of RMT companies, practices that ArenaNet is trying to combat by offering its own in-game RMT system. "Where there's a real profit incentive, someone out there in the world will lie, cheat, and steal to make that profit, " he said. "By letting players trade directly with each other, we take the power away from RMT companies and give it to the entire playerbase."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/guild-wars-2-president-defends-microtransactions-and-in-game-rmt/">ArenaNet president defends microtransactions and in-game RMT in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. Permadeath is one of those game mechanics that seems destined to forever be nibbling away at the fringe of the MMO genre than invited to the cool kids' table. Many players find themselves aghast at the notion of losing all their hard-earned progress with one untimely demise, and it seems like game developers agree with them: Very few MMOs have any sort of permadeath option.<br />
<br />
However, this most-severest-of-severe death penalties does persist. Some players elect to form <a href="http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Mortal_Voyage_Permadeath_Guild">guilds</a> and <a href="http://wowironman.com/">meta-groups</a> to pursue a permadeath lifestyle in their games. A few upcoming titles, such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/salem/"><em>Salem</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wizardry-online/"><em>Wizardry Online</em></a>, have permadeath as a core mechanic. Even the recently released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> has a "hardcore" permadeath mode for the brave at heart.<br />
<br />
The question we put before you today is yet another nibble that may never be noticed by the mainstream, but it's important to consider: Is permadeath worth including in MMO design, even as an optional mechanic or server, or should this brand of death penalty kick the bucket once and for all? Vote after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/leaderboard-permadeath-vs-no-permadeath/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: Permadeath vs. no permadeath</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/leaderboard-permadeath-vs-no-permadeath/">Leaderboard: Permadeath vs. no permadeath</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. A long time ago on a server far, far away, the Imperial forces <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> prepared a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> update to rule the online world: <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/21/star-wars-the-old-republics-13-patch-revealed">patch 1.3</a>. Called Allies, patch 1.3 will usher in a group finder, character transfers, and legacy perks.<br />
<br />
The group finder will aid in banding together interested adventurers to tackle operations and flashpoints. Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-erickson">Daniel Erickson</a> said that the time is ripe for the feature, as players are spread out in levels and are rolling plenty of alts. Saying that BioWare wants to "respect the communities" that have formed, Erickson reports that the group finder will not be cross-server.<br />
<br />
He also revealed some of the other key features for patch 1.3. Additional perks to the Legacy system will allow players to customize their experience; we'll see new ports, earlier access to mounts, and bonus XP modifiers for PvP. The patch will also change social gear to fit the armor type of the class using it, server transfers, and the ability to add augments to any crafting items. Looking past 1.3, Erickson promises a "return to big content" with patch 1.4.<br />
<br />
If you're a fan of the <em>SWTOR </em>novels, you'll also be delighted to hear that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/drew-karpyshyn/">Drew Karpyshyn</a> <a href="http://www.darthhater.com/articles/swtor-news/20431-new-swtor-novel-details-revealed">announced that his next novel</a>, Annihilation, is scheduled for November 13th.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Pocket-Legends/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Star-Legends/"><em>Star Legends</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends</em></a>. And now... <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arcane-legends/"><em>Arcane Legends</em></a>?<br />
<br />
Yes, it appears to be true! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spacetime-studios/">Spacetime Studios</a> is working on a fourth title for its popular mobile MMO library, <a href="http://www.trademarkia.com/arcane-legends-85589926.html">filing a trademark</a> that has since been approved. The application for a U.S. federal trademark was submitted on April 5th and was given the thumbs up May 10th. As one of its categories is "electronic game software for cellular telephones," we can reasonably deduce that <em>Arcane Legends</em> will launch on mobile devices in the same manner of its older siblings.<br />
<br />
Spacetime Studios told us that it will release an official announcement of the title later this week. The studio <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/07/dark-legends-launches-on-apple-devices-hits-500k-players/">recently released</a> the vampire-themed MMO <em>Dark Legends</em> on iOS and Android devices.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/spacetime-studios-teases-arcane-legends/">Spacetime Studios teases Arcane Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. As many <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> players know, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> takes place in the same world and often in the same areas -- just 250 years after its predecessor. Because of this, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> elected not to wipe the slate clean and start over with 100% new environments but instead to incorporate old locales and landmarks into its upcoming game.<br />
<br />
<em>Guild Wars</em> fan Claire became fascinated with this concept and has dedicated a new blog to documenting all of the visual changes in the world between the first and second game. It's called <a href="http://projecttyria.blogspot.ca/">Project Tyria</a>, and each post consists of several <em>Guild Wars </em>locales contrasted with screenshots of the same areas from the sequel.<br />
<br />
Claire writes, "I've always loved the graphics of the <em>Guild Wars</em> games and have grown to love the world of Tyria. We were there in the before times, and now we arrive again in the after."<br />
<br />
It's fascinating to see how ArenaNet has envisioned 250 years taking its toll on the monuments, cities, and vales of the original game; realizing the importance of keeping the world accurate for the hardcore fans seems to be a noted priority for the team. Head over to <a href="http://projecttyria.blogspot.ca/">Project Tyria</a> to see more on the comparison screenshots.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/fan-documents-visual-changes-between-guild-wars-and-guild-wars-2/">Fan documents visual changes between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Do you believe that the MMO genre has been stuck in a rut over the past few years? So does <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christopher-lye/">Christopher Lye</a>, the global brand director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>, who publicly denounced the post-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> trend in the industry as stagnant.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/170650/Is_Guild_Wars_2_the_answer_to_stagnant_MMO_design.php">In an interview with Gamasutra</a>, Lye stated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is walking the walk when it comes to genuinely challenging the status quo in the industry. "Honestly, I think the problem is that there's been a lack of change in MMO design and that <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is a reaction to that," he said. "People will call this risky, but we think it's riskier just to churn out the same MMO that everyone has played before."<br />
<br />
Lye pointed to <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> scaling dynamic event system and its action combat as examples of how ArenaNet is forging its own path. Observing that player consumption of content is "virtually insatiable," Lye said that the team has developed tools to allow it to implement changes and additions to dynamic events in hours, not weeks.<br />
<br />
Is this industry stagnation coming to an end? Lye says yes: "We're finally seeing a point where companies realize that they're not going to create the next great MMO by just copying what's come before."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/arenanet-guild-wars-2-a-reaction-to-sluggish-mmo-design/">ArenaNet: Guild Wars 2 a 'reaction' to sluggish MMO design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. You would think that growth and expansion is nothing but a good thing for MMOs -- after all, those are the hallmarks of the genre. But as these games get bigger, issues emerge as the developers add new zones, features, and systems. In short, maturing MMOs gravitate toward complexity, and this can have an adverse effect on the game as a whole.<br />
<br />
The problem is that there is eventually too much a brand-new player has to absorb and master, not to mention the hassle of rolling alts and having to navigate all of that content once more. If developers don't stay on top of the situation, then the game starts to lose overall cohesion and becomes a befuddling mess.<br />
<br />
With three expansions and numerous updates under its belt, <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> is venturing deep into this territory. I have friends who are leveling up for the first time and finding themselves overwhelmed with everything that needs doing as well as all the systems that are not clearly explained. So today I want to play backseat developer and talk about five ways that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> should be streamlined for the good of all players, old and new.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-road-to-mordor-five-ways-lotro-should-be-streamlined/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Five ways LotRO should be streamlined</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-road-to-mordor-five-ways-lotro-should-be-streamlined/">The Road to Mordor: Five ways LotRO should be streamlined</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. Account theft and compromise are tragic facts of life in all MMOs, as player BlackJackieChan discovered the other day when he logged into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin"><em>APB: Reloaded</em></a> and realized that <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2012/05/18/apb-reloaded-hacked-account/#.T7biyQsLrFw.twitter">he was wiped out</a>.<br />
<br />
After posting a tirade on the forums, BlackJackieChan got the attention of a GM, who subsequently investigated the crime. His findings were stunning: BlackJackieChan's in-game friend beef43302 was the culprit. Beef43302 had crept into his friend's account, swiped a number of goods, and then deleted the temporary characters used for the theft. Beef43302 then tried to cover up his wrongdoing by consoling BlackJackieChan with a new car and encouraging him to stick with the game.<br />
<br />
Even though BlackJackieChan was accused of not protecting his account (apparently he had shown his password to his friend), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GamersFirst/">GamersFirst</a> restored the stolen items and then offered BlackJackieChan the chance to decide his friend's punishment. "Seeing as this is a relatively unique case," <a href="http://forums.gamersfirst.com/topic/279695-hacked/page_st_40">the GM wrote</a>, "we shall let you decide the fate of beef43302."<br />
<br />
BlackJackieChan has yet to respond on the thread, but the GM did tell the offender that the company suspended his account "unless BlackJackieChan says otherwise."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/guy-steals-friends-goods-in-apb-gm-offers-vigilante-justice-in/">Guy steals friend's goods in APB, GM offers vigilante justice in return</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />
<br />
38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />
<br />
We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. The studio and state <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">are looking for options</a>, but in the meanwhile, 38 Studios has been struggling to make payments <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">by holding back employee paychecks</a> and seeking additional capital from private investors.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">38 Studios' Project Copernicus to release in June 2013, says RI governor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 14:30:00 EST. Two of the biggest cornerstones of <a href="http://www.gamersfirst.com/fallenearth/"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> have always been crafting and PvP, and its these cornerstones that GamersFirst is enriching come patch 2.4. The patch, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/fallen-earth-2-4-patch-to-feature-territory-control-automated-h/">called Global Territory Control</a>, is taking these elements and firing them up in ways that any PvPer or crafter should find exciting.<br />

Plenty of guilds talk the big talk and DPS the raid meters, but when the chips are down and the final call is uttered, which one guild will stand on top of the mountain of geek corpses and be proclaimed "Champion?" In most MMOs, that would be rhetorical nonsense, but not in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Archlord/"><em>Archlord</em></a>, where guilds will compete in <a href="http://event.webzen.com/Archlord/Championship/">the first World Guild Championship</a> to earn a $10,000 prize and the recognition of their peers.<br />
<br />
The game's first combined server guild tournament kicks off on June 11th and features pitched PvP battles between guilds to climb the bracket and claim the big prize. All participants will be given a preset character with standard gear in order to minimize any in-game advantages.<br />
<br />
In order to preregister for the tournament, guilds will have to complete a special in-game quest. Registration for the World Guild Championship runs from now through May 30th, with the official brackets announced a few days later on June 4th.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online"><em>MechWarrior Online's</em></a> devs aren't quite ready to disclose specifics on the game's minimum specs or beta process, but news for both is coming "soon." These vague assurances were the anomaly <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/235-tweetchat-roundup">in a recent community Q&amp;A</a>, during which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/russ-bullock">Russ Bullock</a> and Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bryan-ekman">Bryan Ekman</a> spilled on all of the minutia that fans were dying to know.<br />
<br />
The duo said that they're "working very hard" to get <em>MWO </em>servers into every major region and that information about beta will be coming next week. They did confirm that there will be an open beta at some juncture, however.<br />
<br />
Other details disclosed included the fact that players can form groups of up to 12 'Mechs, that legs cannot be blown off (but can be immobilized), and that the launch matchmaking system will be very basic and won't take into account player skill or records.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/mechwarrior-online-dev-qanda-covers-beta-grouping-and-combat-dam/">MechWarrior Online dev Q&amp;A covers beta, grouping, and combat damage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. Everyone seems to freak out about grabbing his or her special character name at the launch of a new MMO, and we imagine <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> will invoke the same emotions. Instead of leaving this oh-so-important action to Day One, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is giving players a chance to reserve their <em>Guild Wars 2</em> names... <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/reserving-your-character-name-for-guild-wars-2">starting today</a>.<br />
<br />
The way it works is that ArenaNet will be reserving all current <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> names for the launch, and players attached to those names can then swoop in and collect them from the start. Three caveats are attached to this process, however: You have to log into <em>Guild Wars </em>sometime in 2012, you have to claim your names in <em>Guild Wars 2</em> by launch day, and you can't secure <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> single names (as <em>Guild Wars</em> forces you to make two-word names).<br />
<br />
The studio says that there are 20 million two-word names in use at this point, and we suspect that list will grow much longer after today. These names can be reserved at any point from now until whenever ArenaNet decides to compile its master list. After launch, ArenaNet promises to free up the unclaimed names for others to take.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/reserve-your-guild-wars-2-character-name-today/">Reserve your Guild Wars 2 character name today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 14:30:00 EST. Call them <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lockbox/">lockboxes</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lootbox/">lootboxes</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/super-pack/">super packs</a>, gift packs, treasure boxes, <a href="http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mystic_Chest">mystic chests</a>, or Chupacabra's lunchpails, but these virtual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mystery-boxes/">boxes of mystery</a>, fame, and fortune are all the rage in MMOs these days. Few studios have resisted the siren's call of such easy money, much to the dismay of many-a-gamer.<br />
<br />
The idea is that a game will dish out to players free locked treasure boxes that require purchased keys to open. The allure of the box's mystery prize is often too strong to resist, especially when there's the possibility of a huge reward inside. The result too often is strong buyer's remorse and studio glee.<br />
<br />
There's been a lot of conversation around lockboxes here on Massively, so I wanted to dedicate this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Perfect-Ten/">Perfect Ten</a> to dissecting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth of these items for you.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/the-perfect-ten-the-truth-about-lockboxes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: The truth about lockboxes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/the-perfect-ten-the-truth-about-lockboxes/">The Perfect Ten: The truth about lockboxes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Did you drop your name into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games'</a> hat as a potential tester for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a>? Then tomorrow might be a lovely day for you, as the studio is emailing out the first round of closed beta keys for registered participants after a short delay from its original key-handing-out schedule.<br />
<br />
It is unknown how many keys will be sent out and to whom. Last month, CCP told <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2012">Fanfest </a>attendees <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/redeem-your-eve-fanfest-code-for-dust-514-beta-access/">that they would be among the first to test</a> the anticipated MMOFPS. <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72271/psn-voucher-distribution-announcement">The <em>DUST 514</em> website states</a> that the studio is sending out Fanfest keys first and keys to standard registered players "soon after."<br />
<br />
To celebrate the release of the closed beta keys, <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72332/dust-514-psn-code-distribution-delayed">CCP is holding a "special event"</a> over the weekend. The details of this event are forthcoming.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: CCP has confirmed that beta registration <a href="http://www.dust514.com/beta">has begun today</a> and that <em>EVE</em> players and Fanfest attendees will get first pick.]</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/dust-514-handing-out-first-beta-keys-tomorrow/">DUST 514 handing out first beta keys tomorrow [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> player Kelly Wells became inspired to go on a real-life adventure due to her explorations of Tyria and <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html">an encouraging TED talk</a> -- and so she did it. Starting from Maine, Wells and her faithful dog <a href="http://ameranth.wordpress.com/">crossed America to California by foot</a>, ending the trip with a visit to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> in Seattle. The developers were so impressed by Wells' journey that they decided to make her part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />

<a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/meet_ameranth">In a new ArenaNet blog post</a>, Lead Content Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> shares how bowled over the devs were when they met Wells and why her epic journey had to become part of <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. "If we all took that perspective on life, deciding to make positive changes and refusing to let anything get in our way, it'd be amazing to see how much we'd all be able to accomplish," Johanson said. The team then collaborated to come up with a similar figure for its upcoming title.<br />
<br />
Thus was born Ameranth, a Sylvari explorer who traverses the width of Tyria with her trusty dog, Anna. When players encounter her, Ameranth is known to say, "Ever since emerging from the Pale Tree, I've had the itch to see what the world has to offer. And what better way than with my own two feet?"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/players-real-life-journey-honored-in-guild-wars-2/">Player's real-life journey honored in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. Is it possible for a top-tier MMO to come out of nowhere and bowl you over? Considering that I follow these games not only for a hobby but as a writer for Massively, I always assumed the answer to that was "no." Until it happened, that is. Until <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/"><em>RIFT</em></a>.<br />
<br />
It's not as though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift"><em>RIFT</em></a> was a big secret or anything, but up until the late hours of 2010, it was very low on my -- and many of my friends' -- radars. I often got it confused with <a href="http://tera.enmasse.com/"><em>TERA</em></a>, for Pete's sake! It wasn't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/06/pax-2010-hands-on-with-rift-planes-of-telara/">until I got my hands on it at PAX that year</a> and then saw how huge the beta got that I realized there was more to this supposedly generic fantasy title than I'd assumed. It truly felt like it came out of nowhere, and before I knew it, I was enjoying what became one of my favorite games of 2011.<br />
<br />
So why did I play <em>RIFT, </em>and why do I still log in on occasion today? Trust me, it's not for the Elves.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/why-i-play-rift/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Why I Play: RIFT</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/why-i-play-rift/">Why I Play: RIFT</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. There's always something to be doing to advance your character in MMOs, whether it's as grand as epic raiding or as mundane as getting that Litter Bug achievement for cleaning up the in-game park. While some folks simply log in and do whatever their whims dictate, I have a feeling that many of us have elaborate to-do lists that guide our actions.<br />
<br />
I love doing this with MMOs because it makes me feel like a multitasking genius. Working toward six or seven goals at once generates a tsunami of accomplishment in my soul, and there is nothing quite as satisfying as crossing off tasks from my own list.<br />
<br />
So what's on your character's to do list today? What goals are you working toward, and how long do you expect them to take? Unleash your inner accountant and show us the details!<br />

Computer RPG players in the late '80s and early '90s were surely familiar with Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) and its now-infamous <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Box">Gold Box series</a>. The series, so named because of their distinctive gold packaging, ran on a solid engine that helped the company churn out over a dozen titles within a five-year span. From Dungeons &amp; Dragons' <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pool_of_Radiance"><em>Pool of Radiance</em></a> to <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countdown_to_Doomsday">Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday</a></em>, these titles quickly became revered among the gaming community. I personally have very fond memories of playing both Buck Rogers titles, despite not having ever watched the show.<br />
<br />
While the Gold Box series has not become as timeless or replayable as late '90s classics like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/baldurs-gate/"><em>Baldur's Gate</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout"><em>Fallout</em></a>, they definitely had a huge impact on the PC scene and helped elevate the CRPG genre. Following the Gold Box engine, SSI went on to produce another engine that it used for a completely new series set in the D&amp;D campaign setting of Dark Sun. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Sun:_Shattered_Lands"><em>Dark Sun: Shattered Lands</em></a> (1993) and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Sun:_Wake_of_the_Ravager"><em>Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager</em></a> (1994) were both modest hits, and when it came time for a third game in the series, SSI decided to make the leap to the then-untested realm of online gaming.<br />
<br />
What followed was a wild two-year experiment in MMOs that happened prior to the <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.everquest.com">EverQuest</a> </em>generation. While ultimately unsuccessful in achieving its potential or gaining a large audience, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dark-sun-online/"><em>Dark Sun Online: Crimson Sands</em></a> made a valiant attempt at achieving the inevitable future of gaming.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/the-game-archaeologist-dark-sun-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: Dark Sun Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/the-game-archaeologist-dark-sun-online/">The Game Archaeologist: Dark Sun Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. If all goes well, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/blade-and-soul/"><em>Blade &amp; Soul</em></a> will be making its public debut in July. That's the good news; the bad news is that the launch will be confined to Korea for the time being.<br />
<br />
The company <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/en/2012/05/15/bladesoul-is-expected-to-launch-in-july">recently announced in an earnings call</a> that the title is on track to go into open beta testing by June and then launch this July. There's some hope at NCsoft that the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> will grow the potential gamer audience in the country, an audience that could be attracted to <em>Blade &amp; Soul</em> come this summer.<br />
<br />
Currently the game is in closed beta, with the next round of testing commencing on May 22nd. ThisIsGame reports that <em>Blade &amp; Soul</em> has stirred up controversy with testers due to a vitality system that limits how fast a player can advance his or her character.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/blade-and-soul-on-track-to-launch-in-korea-this-july/">Blade &amp; Soul on track to launch in Korea this July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 08:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/"><em>Allods Online's</em></a> mascots are back for <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/13/the-troll-crab-continue-their-adventures/">another humorous video</a>, as Troll and Crab try their hands (claws) at making potions. It doesn't quite go as expected, but it's hard to blame Crab for what happens (he's just an earnest little guy). This is all to promote the game's newest update, patch 3.0.2, which promises to be a savory concoction for players to quaff. Over the weekend, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato/">gPotato</a> <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/minisite/">opened up a new mini-site</a> to promote the update and has since posted several new articles highlighting the changes.<br />
<br />
Some of patch 3.0.2's big selling points include <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/11/patch-3-0-02-preview-new-alchemy-system/">a revamp</a> of the Alchemy profession, the ability for <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/11/patch-3-0-02-preview-new-alchemy-system/">pets to do the looting</a>, a neat-sounding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/allods-onlines-patch-3-0-1-bringing-mentor-system-new-astral-s/">mentor system</a>, a new skirmish called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">The Deserted Farm</a>, a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/allods-onlines-patch-3-0-1-bringing-mentor-system-new-astral-s/">free-for-all treasure hunting space</a>, a new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">raid boss</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">better questing</a>.<br />
<br />
Before you head over to see all of the patch changes, make sure to catch up on the latest episode of Troll and Crab after the break!<br />

Everyone loves <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/housing/">player housing</a>, right? Oh, quiet you in the back. Look into my eye: Everyone loves player housing. It is the number one most requested, demanded, and mandatory feature of every MMO. In terms of priority, "having monsters to kill in the game" is lower than giving us sweet pads to decorate. This is the way the virtual world should be and always has been.<br />
<br />
Well, now that I've dipped into the well of delusion, it's time to emerge with my hair sopping wet and my mind open to the possibility of a player housing revival. With the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> 3.0 update, players in this now-free-to-play game can move into a suburban dreamhouse and spend countless hours figuring out the exact decor to match the subtle majesty of the bathroom's toilet.<br />
<br />
But is it enough to challenge the de facto leader of player housing, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>? Mountains of novels have been written on this game's housing system, novels that were then used to construct a giant book fort in the middle of the grand ballroom. Because that's just how flexible that system can be.<br />
<br />
So pitted against each other in an interior design contest, which game would emerge triumphant? Cast your vote after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/leaderboard-everquest-iis-housing-vs-aions-housing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: EverQuest II's housing vs. Aion's housing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/leaderboard-everquest-iis-housing-vs-aions-housing/">Leaderboard: EverQuest II's housing vs. Aion's housing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/update-7/">Update 7</a> is upon us, and it's established itself as taking a step forward... and a step back into the past. Featuring a new skirmish, a revamp of both Moria and the old Fornost instance, and an interesting addition to the legendary item system, Update 7 has a smattering of both endgame and mid-game content for most players to enjoy.<br />
<br />
As always, it's worth combing through the notes for the smaller changes. Some of these include <a href="http://casualstrolltomordor.com/2012/05/andangs-update-7-impressions/">new and updated maps</a>, friendlier Elves in Lothlorien who won't shoot you on sight, and Audacity lowering power costs in PvMP.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> continues to roll out the rewards for being well-liked this week. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> crossed the half-million Facebook like barrier, and as a result, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150859536394209&amp;set=a.135044094208.103264.114036714208&amp;type=1">the studio released a new epic piece of art</a> for its fans.<br />
<br />
The picture is of Destiny's Edge, the adventuring group that features so prominently in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, facing a rather fearsome foe: The Shatterer. According to the Facebook page, this is actually an in-game screenshot that's been "embellished" by ArenaNet artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-dociu/">Daniel Dociu</a>. As with the other pictures that it has released, ArenaNet has made this image available as <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenanet/6945989372/sizes/l/in/photostream/">a high-resolution version</a> as well.<br />
<br />
This art release comes at an auspicious time, as <em>Guild Wars 2</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/brace-yourself-the-guild-wars-2-stress-test-is-coming/">is diving into a seven-hour beta stress test</a> starting today at 2:00 p.m. EDT.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/guild-wars-2-nets-500k-facebook-likes-releases-destinys-edge-a/">Guild Wars 2 nets 500K Facebook likes, releases Destiny's Edge art to celebrate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 08:30:00 EST. Without fail, the second I'm done writing this column for Massively, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> releases the big news of a major patch, and I have to wait a whole week to talk about it. In the case of <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/update-7/">Update 7</a>, I'm not that upset. I definitely was underwhelmed by it all initially, but now that I have had a whole week to digest it, read through the test server notes, and scope out the Moria dev diary that was posted, I feel like I'm in a much better position to talk about it.<br />
<br />
So what does this game update mean for you? That's a good question, and it really depends on where you are in your leveling journey. New players won't be fazed by it whatsoever, but both mid-game and endgame adventurers are going to have some new (and reworked) content to devour. I am heartened that Turbine doesn't have tunnel-vision for the endgame and is still willing to go back and examine what does and doesn't work about its earlier content.<br />
<br />
So let's walk through the major highlights of Update 7: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Shades-of-the-Past/">Shades of the Past</a> and give it the ol' Road to Mordor analysis, shall we?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-road-to-mordor-what-update-7-means-for-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: What Update 7 means for you</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-road-to-mordor-what-update-7-means-for-you/">The Road to Mordor: What Update 7 means for you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Pay attention: The universe is going to war on May 22nd. That's awfully nice for the universe to schedule these things and give us a heads up, don't you think? If that isn't enough, the makers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online:</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> have given us <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/inferno">the official expansion website</a> with an infolicious, nougaty center.<br />
<br />
The brand-new website has information on <em>EVE's</em> 17th expansion, including details on the graphics update, the war declaration system, the mercenary marketplace, the unified inventory, and more. According to the website, "<em>Inferno</em> invites new players with a lower barrier to entry, empowers veterans with more control over their wars, and entices combatants of all types with advanced new weaponry."<br />
<br />
Our own <em>EVE Online</em> columnist Brendan has been busy covering the expansion, with analysis on <em>Inferno's</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/22/eve-evolved-mining-returns-with-inferno/">mining system</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/15/eve-evolved-fixing-the-wardec-system/">the PvP revamp</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/eve-online-inferno-website-goes-live/">EVE Online: Inferno website goes live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex">Jagex</a> is heading to the <a href="http://www.londonexpo.com">MCM Expo</a> for the first time, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runescape"><em>RuneScape</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/transformers-universe/"><em>Transformers Universe</em></a> in tow. The studio has special plans for its fans at the largest pop culture event in the UK, not the least of which will be the opportunity to meet members of the dev team.<br />
<br />
At the convention, <em>RuneScapers</em> will get a deeper look into how the game is developed, watch the creation of concept art, and have the opportunity to pick up one of several player packs for the game. The packs will come in two varieties: a starter pack and a premium pack that includes cosmetic items, membership, and an exclusive t-shirt.<br />
<br />
<em>Transformers Universe</em> fans also will get to meet the dev team and reserve their names for the game when it releases later this year.<br />
<br />
Brian Cooney, the managing director of the expo, is thrilled to have the studio on board: "Each year people ask me if they are coming and finally I can say 'Yes!' The Jagex stand promises to be a 'must see' for show visitors."<br />
<br />
The London Expo takes place from May 25th through the 27th at the Excel.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/runescape-and-transformers-universe-appearing-at-london-mcm-expo/">RuneScape and Transformers Universe appearing at London MCM Expo for the first time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 May 2012 10:00:00 EST.
