Jef is an author, pilot, and scruffy looking nerf-herder, not necessarily in that order.  When he's not writing for Massively or slipping the surly bonds of earth, he dreams of the perfect Cool Ranch Dorito.

Lost Continent is his fault, and he's the creator of Massively's MMO Burnout, Rewind, Stick and Rudder, Chaos Theory, The Firing Line, Some Assembly Required, Community Detective, Wings Over Atreia, The Anvil of Crom, and the Alter Ego web comic.

He's covered SWTOR, Elder Scrolls, EverQuest II, and Darkfall at length, and he has an incurable case of MMO wanderlust. You'll occasionally find him atop Massively's Soapbox.

The Daily Grind: Do you log into games you're not currently playing?

I haven't played Marvel Heroes in about two months. Blame Elite: Dangerous, ArcheAge, and a pile of single-player games, I guess, but I just haven't been able to fit it into my rotation here lately. That said, I've logged into the game for 122 straight days, entirely because of Gazillion's penchant...

Make My MMO: December 14 - 20, 2014

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Elite: Dangerous launched. Let's hold here for a brief round of applause. Moving on, Camelot Unchained's Mark Jacobs talked up developmental transparency, and his PvP sandbox closed in on $3 million in total funding. Last but not least, Massively interviewed S...

The Daily Grind: Do single-player games give you a craving for MMOs?

I made a dent in my Steam backlog this month, and one of the older titles that I finally got around to beating was Alan Wake. This has nothing to do with MMOs, really, except for the fact that the game's creepy atmospherics and its focus on the supernatural made me want to fire up The Secret World....

Leaderboard: Are you playing Elite: Dangerous this week?

I'm vacationing from Massively this week, but I'm not vacationing from MMOs. Unless Elite: Dangerous isn't technically an MMO. Maybe it isn't, I dunno, because I haven't played long enough to form an opinion just yet. Anyway, Elite! Launched yesterday! Yay! Maybe after my vacation I'll manage to wr...

The Daily Grind: Which tabletop setting would make a great MMO?

Tabletop RPG properties haven't fared too well as MMORPGs. Yeah, Dungeons and Dragons Online has lasted for eight years and as far as anyone knows, Neverwinter is profitable. But then you have Champions Online and Pathfinder, which aren't exactly setting the world on fire. And we all know how World...

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite MOBA?

I'm a bit late to the MOBA party, but this past week I've been having a grand old time playing Infinite Crisis. Previously I'd dabbled in SMITE and Guardians of Middle-earth, but I'd never seriously considered a MOBA as part of my regular fun-time rotation. That's all changed thanks to IC, thoug...

Make My MMO: December 7 - 13, 2014

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Shards Online pretty much stole the show. Sure, Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous made some noise like they always do, but the player-driven sandbox world-builder from Citadel Studios not only polished off a successful Kickstarter campaign but also started gettin...

Marvel Heroes now features a female Wolverine

Fancy a female version of Wolverine? Marvel Heroes now has one in the form of X-23. Laura Kinney was cloned from Wolverine's DNA and raised in a lab, according to developer Gazillion's website. She was "trained from birth to use her claws, enhanced senses, and innocent appearance to become the perf...

SOE bracing for 'enormous' Landmark update

So next week's Landmark update is big. Real big, according to SOE's Dave Georgeson. The patch includes "caves down to the world core," salvaging, crafting tweaks, transportation systems, monsters, new loot, and more. Georgeson also cautions that SOE "fully expects this update to be problematic."...
