According to the BBC, Liverpool Hope University, the smallest of the three, recently held an open day wholly within Second Life. Media students spent six months in Second Life building replicas of some of the buildings as well as other elements, such as their ideal student accommodation. Potential students from around the world were then able to interact with student ambassadors for the day. This activity was supported by the head of department and the head of marketing for LHU.

Although LHU will be holding a more traditional open day in June, it is exciting to see the acceptance of Second Life both as a venue in which students can be expected to work, and for such a potentially critical activity as assisting student recruitment by the university's administrators. If you would like to see their work, the Liverpool Hope sim appears to be open to the public now.
Liverpool Hope University holds open day in Second Life originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 30 Mar 2008 10:00:00 EST. This week's show deals with books, films and "video games" including various clips from MMOGs. It is currently available to UK residents on iPlayer. A quick search on youtube shows previous episodes have made it onto the site, but this programme is not yet there.

The show contains material from Terry Prachett, Michael Moorcock, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Gaiman, China Miéville and others as well as material about Tolkein amongst many others. It looks at the development of fantasy books into RPGs (with some painful 70's hairdos as college students are playing table-top AD&D). Around 37 minutes in, it jumps to World of Warcraft, then LoRTO at about 42 minutes in. Being BBC Four there is a lot talk about the cultural significance, the psychology of gaming and the like, but if you enjoy reading fantasy books and watching fantasy films as well as playing your MMOGs you will probably enjoy this hour of television when you get the chance to see it.
Worlds of Fantasy Through the Looking Glass on BBC Four: currently available on iPlayer originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 18:30:00 EST. As many coders who play the money market or read the news wondered, why the long shut down? Consider Linden Lab: they roll out upgrades across thousands of servers in a few hours of downtime, because they prepare and test the code in the background. Although we all cross our fingers the number of problematic upgrades is actually very small, and their code is millions of times more complicated.

Since then, WSE has decided to stop trading in Linden Dollars altogether, and reasserted the statement it is simply a game. We didn't advertise the conference here on Massively because the available places went within minutes of registration opening. However, the presentations from the conference are gradually becoming available. I have to declare a personal interest here: I co-presented one of the sessions, but there were many other sessions covering a wide range of topics of interest to those in virtual worlds and libraries, education and museums.

Although not directly linked to this story, another view of the future of education crossed my desk the other day. KnowledgeWorks is carrying a map of the future forces affecting education. Whether it will affect you personally, professionally, or is of more interest to you as a parent, it is well worth a look.
Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education and Museums conference presentations available originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 13 Mar 2008 21:00:00 EST. There are doubtless those of you that run several at once, but here at Massively we've just had a straw poll and most people run 2 or 3 games actively. World of Warcraft appeared on more than half of the lists - but perhaps surprisingly nowhere close to all of them.

Acclaim is building their appeal on the basis that everyone will have one game they're relatively faithful too (call it WoW for the sake of argument, they do!) and a number of other games that they will dip into. If you set up a system where you can choose from a multitude of games and pay a small fee for playing it now then you can make a living from this. Five million people paying 1c each day on average, is still $50,000 a day after all. There are other things this philosophy leads them to.

A not-so-niche market? originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 10:00:00 EST. Currently their AI has the smarts of a typical four-year old child, but it is capable of listening to what is "said" (in text) in Second Life and reacting to it appropriately as well as moving the avatar and typing its own replies.

Whilst a four-year old might not sound like much to the uninitiated, Professor Bringsjord, leader of the project and head of the Cognitive Sciences Department points out that to fully mimic adult behaviour would take a super-computer. As well as learning about creating AIs, the team are able to test theories about the development of the human mind. Enterprising users have put together specific ways for their application to work together, such as Kisa Naumova's building importer.

Thanks to a tip about AC3D from the people at Digital Urban I can report that there is now a cross-platform modeling programme that is both affordable and comes with various plug-ins allowing it to export items from inivis.com's AC3D to Second Life. This includes making sculpties, making boxes, and the inevitable high-prim "make anything with triangles." It's a weakness in a teacher, since they are often incredibly good resources for learning materials. But, in my opinion, they are, all too often, stale, dull places presenting information passively and failing to engage their users. The exception to this, and places in which I have spent happy hours from Life in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to Otago Museum, Dunedin, are the interactive science museums: the grand-daddy of them all being the Exploratorium in San Francisco. This isn't completely rambling: interactive museums are immersive, engaging learning experiences, and do the weird and wild from time to time. Surely Second Life would be a wonderful place for them to establish a presence, since so many educators are doing immersive education and the weird and wild in Second Life?

If you decide to search, don't go to the Exploratorium sim, as I did, go to it's neighbour Sploland instead: the Exploratorium sim looks like a workshop, whilst Sploland is a fully fledged exhibit. (Exploratium is open and is interesting too mind you, but it's not a fully-fledged exhibition/interactive experience and there's a fair bit of plywood around.) If you like this sort of thing, or are just curious, it's a great way to spend an hour or two. If, like me, you have bad memories of more traditional museums, there are moves afoot to shake things up there. The rather wonderful Museum 2.0 blog is one I love reading, and might be of interest to you as an educators or someone that wishes museums were better as well as the museum professionals.
Interactive Science Museums in Second Life originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. There are about 57,500 people online at the moment (depending on exactly when you try to log in and get the numbers) which is a slight increase in the peak concurrency from last week, and it appears just enough to make the asset cluster scream in agony for the first time in a few months.

No word on the official blog as yet, but be warned your Second Life experience may be rather poor at the moment.

Update: The official blog has been updated to say they're experiencing a temporary interruption of In World Services and, "Please refrain from land and L$ transactions until we give an all clear."

Update #2: Though Linden recently gave the all clear, they're now reporting there are still some functionality issues. We don't have any specifics, only, "We are looking into this and will update you as soon as we have information."

Update #3: As of 5:19 PM EST (2:19 SLT), "In world services are beginning to resume. Some transactions were delayed and are catching up."

Update #4: As of 2:47 SL Time the problem is re-opened. Do not conduct land or L$ transactions.

Update#5: As of 3:15 SLT it is meant to be fixed again. Some caution might be in order, but back in the pool everyone!
It's Sunday and the Second Life grid is behaving badly [Updated] originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 09 Mar 2008 15:45:00 EST.
