        Dragon Nest couldn't be more different from Vindictus, Nexon's other new title. Where Vindictus is all about "elegant brutality," Nexon describes Dragon Nest as "kinetic and beautiful." And though both games are lovely in their own way, Dragon Nest's style is more typical of what you'd expect from Nexon: The art is stylized, with a bit of an anime feel to it. Gameplay felt a surprising amount like Nexon's 2-D classic arcade-style MMO, Dungeon Fighter Online, though DN is fully 3-D and much more like what you'd expect of an MMO. But like DFO, DN's combat is fast-paced, full of flashy animations, and just a lot of fun. With every game we see from Nexon, it's clear that they're taking everything they've learned from previous development and adding it to their latest project.

        Though we haven't seen everything the game has to offer, Dragon Nest may be their most polished game yet.

          With as many demo stations as Nexon had available to show off their latest games -- Vindictus and Dragon Nest -- we could hardly pass by without stopping to play for a few minutes. And now we're going to try to pass the experience on to you, with words and pictures that don't quite do the game justice. But until it it goes live later this year (they're hoping to launch in the fall), this will have to suffice. So let's talk Vindictus.

          Vindictus is a free-to-play game of the likes we've never seen before. It's running on Valve's Source Engine and looks simply incredible. It represents a major departure from Nexon's usual stylized graphics -- Vindictus is as realistic as they come, with crisp graphics and clean animation. It's also a departure content-wise: Vindictus is joyfully violent, allowing you to hack away at monsters, smash almost anything element in the environment, and destroy your opponents with finishing moves. And, of course, to look damn good while doing it. It's "all about elegant brutality," Nexon tells us, and we have to agree.

            ChangYou's Zentia is -- you guessed it -- another free-to-play title coming from Asia. So what makes it stand out from the rest? We talked to the game's senior producer, Susan Revelt at E3 and she tells us it's the game's story that makes it shine. And we admit, Zentia does start with a rather unique premise: You enter the game as one of 22 (former) immortals who have been banished from the immortal realms and tasked with ridding the world of demons before they can return. It's ChangYou's take on telling a fairy tale... with a humorous twist. (Revelt tells us they're aiming for a Princess Bride or Labyrinth feel with the story and the humor.) Whether this has given them what they need to succeed in the crowded free to play market is still up in the air. Though we've seen footage of the game, we haven't had a chance to test drive it ourselves and the closed beta won't begin until early July, with a planned release towards the end of August.

              On Tuesday, we caught up with Chris Early, Ubisoft's Vice President of Digital Publishing, to chat about Heroes of Might and Magic's future with a new browser-based MMO. I must admit, I'm personally a bit skeptical about whether browser-based games can supplant full-fledged applications, but after talking with Chris, I'm sold on the concept -- at least insofar as Might and Magic Heroes Kingdom is concerned.

              First up, the basics. Just what is MMHK?
              • Ubisoft calls MMHK a "strategic casual MMO." It's turn-based with more of real-time strategy vibe than we've seen in other MMOs and it's designed with people who may only have a few minutes a day to play in mind. Think of something along the lines of multiplayer Civilization with thousands of other people and you'd be near the mark. Now, whether "casual" turns into hours of "just one more turn" is another matter entirely.
              • Gameplay and lore from the Might and Magic franchise we all know and love -- the goal with MMHK is just to throw more players into the mix.
              • Want PvP? You can do that. Want PvE? You can do that. Want to advance as a merchant-type character purely for the pursuit of wealth without killing your fellow players? You can do that, too.
              • Browser-based, which means you can play it on your PC, your Mac, or even your shiny new iPad -- wherever you've got an internet connection.This means there's no software to download or install.
              • Free to play with an optional subscription fee. (Though Ubisoft hasn't announced pricing for the game's North American release, it's currently live in France, where a monthly subscription runs five euros.)

                            • Beau Hindman (@spouseaggro): I will be playing all sorts of stuff, including Alganon, Mabinogi and getting back into EQ (I started a brand new character for the first time in years.) And, of course, I will be trying to hit 5k coins in my Free Realms coin spin!
                            • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): I've gotten back into Runes of Magic lately and am definitely having more fun this time around. So far I've been enjoying the minigames and events a lot.

                                        Another week, another weekend. What game's siren song is luring the Massively staff to their computers this holiday weekend? We wanted to know, too -- so we did the straightforward thing and asked. A few people even answered us.
                                        • Dan O'Halloran: Leveling my Fury in EverQuest 2 during their bonus experience weekend in anticipation of their Sentinel's Fate expansion. Exploring the Volume 3 Book 1 patch on the LotRO test servers. Delving deeper into Mirkwood on the LotRO live servers. Oh yes, and spending the three day weekend in Joshua Tree with the family. Thank the gods for in-hotel wifi.
                                        • Eliot Lefebvre: At the moment, I'm kind of between major things in games. Final Fantasy XI and City of Heroes both have big changes around the corner but not here quite yet, and I've just sort of idly been poking at some of my long-time single-player favorites without a great deal of vigor. I'll most likely poke a bit at both of the above games, perhaps look around and see if I can find any free trials to while away the weekends. (And if readers want to suggest something in the comments,well, I'm not saying no.)
                                        • Seraphina Brennan (@sera_brennan): This weekend is all about playing EQII for me. I need to take advantage of the bonus experience and get my character leveled up! Need to start getting closer to Sentinel's Fate, at least! Beyond that, I'm probably going to be preparing for this Monday's big EQII contest that we're doing. I'll be making some devious puzzles for everyone. Hopefully they will be hard, but rewarding!
                                        • Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): Planning on taking advantage of the bonus XP in EverQuest II and getting back into Age of Conan this weekend. If you see a Ratonga or Stygian stumbling around doing weird stuff like smacking into walls, that's probably (a very NyQuil-ed up) me.
                                        • Tateru Nino (@taterunino): Another weekend of meetings and projects in Second Life, though I'm hoping for some Champions Online and Company of Heroes time as well.

So to the poor unfortunates who are not in STO's beta, let's simply assure you that we're not out learning to pilot starships or picking fights with Klingons. Of course not. It would be terribly unkind of us to brag about these things to an audience out in the cold. We'll just be sitting around Massively HQ all weekend playing the same old MMOs -- really, it's hardly worth even posting about is it? Probably not even worth the bother of clicking through to read the rest of this post.

Namely, with countless MMOs (and let's not even get started on the non-MMO options) at our disposal, what should we play this weekend? Decisions, decisions...

                                                              • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): I've actually been losing a lot of enthusiasm for playing EVE Online lately. I decided not to apply for this term of the Council of Stellar Management and haven't logged in much. I've been spending my spare time playing a little Master of Orion II and another single-player 4X game called Galactic Civilizations II instead.
                                                              • Brooke Pilley (@Snafzg): Let's just see if I can hit 25 in Aion this weekend. I'm 10-days behind the curve due to vacation, but it was worth it! :P
                                                              • Eliot Lefebvre: I've got some more DDO to play, but I think much of the weekend will be spent offline with a dear friend -- Final Fantasy XII. All the news about XIV has gotten me in the mood for it again.
                                                              • James Egan (@jamesegan): I'm gearing up for a Legion Tech III cruiser in EVE Online and should be good to go this week. I might need to liquidate some of my assets to cover the full cost though. EVE will probably be the only MMO I play this weekend, especially as I hear the call of Steam and TF2 once again -- it's been WAY too long. Also my friend headed off to Scotland for a month and loaned me his Xbox 360 game collection so there'll be no small amount of console gaming this weekend for me. Plus, y'know, writing.
                                                              • Kyle Horner (@Kylehorner): I'm playing the moving game, where you box up all your belongings, shove it all into a vehicle and see how long it takes you to move and unbox everything at your new home. That's right, playing the moving game means you win a new home! At least, if you count still having to pay for everything a new home. Oh, I'll play probably play some Aion on my new laptop. Mmm, maximum settings. /drool
                                                              • Rubi Bayer: I'm fascinated with DDO, and have been playing it daily as I have time. This weekend, though? Guild Wars. The Halloween events start tomorrow and heaven forbid I don't check out the new quests, visit the collectors, farm trick or treat bags, and hang around LA checking out the decorations. Otherwise? Still grinding that writing title. Love it!

                                                                This weekend, Brendan's breaking out the Amiga and William's going the Super Nintendo route. Back at Massively HQ, we've got to wonder -- were there MMOs for those platforms? (We have trouble recollecting the days before the advent of the internet and the era of massively multiplayer -- though we're vaguely sure that there was a time when these did not exist.) Well, at least some of us are getting our game on this weekend in proper MMO fashion:

                                                                • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): I've been on something of a retro kick this week, playing old Amiga games like Heimdall 2, K240, and Frontier: Elite II (which are all awesome). Sometimes MMOs have to take a back seat as we connect with our inner twelve-year-olds :D
                                                                • Dan O'Halloran: My friend turned me on to the Esteldin Bounty Quests in LotRO. Now that I have swift travel in Forochel, I'll be knocking those out for Legendary Item exp. Also, doing Crafting instances to max out my Prospecting before the expansion hits. Joined a new guild so hoping to get in some Turtle groups as well.
                                                                • Eliot Lefebvre: I've finally caved in and decided to try DDO out, now that I've actually taken a look at how much you can buy in the game. I'm also still on my Mega Man kick, and want to see if I can blow through X5 over the weekend.
                                                                • Kyle Horner (@kylehorner): More Aion and Champions Online for me this weekend. Just bought a new gaming laptop, too, so by next week I'll be playing them on that!
                                                                • Tracey John (@TraceyJohn): I decided to roll a new Tauren Shaman in WoW. Because I hate sunlight. I've also got Big Apple Comic-Con in NYC this weekend, where I'll try to see William Shatner. And apparently Naughty By Nature are playing (yeeeaaah, I don't know). I'll try to tweet pics from the show floor!
                                                                • Seraphina Brennan (@sera_brennan): This weekend is getting some play time with MAG, then perhaps sitting down to play some Aion and get me some more levels. Otherwise, there will be roleplaying, as there is every weekend for me. I <3 mah pen and paper RPGs!
                                                                • William Dobson: I think I will be totally random this weekend and dust off my Super Nintendo. I suddenly have a craving for some good 16-bit gaming.

I was just going to write up this week's WRUP and if everyone could let me know what they're playing, it would be super helpful! Guys? Guys? Anybody home? Well, I can't tell you where everyone is -- perhaps they're actually gaming instead of slaving away over hot keyboards -- but of the Massively crew that responded, here's what they're playing this weekend:
                                                                  • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): I've been trying out a variant of my Invisible Legion strategic cruiser setup in EVE Online. I used the covert ops subsystem and the interdiction nullifier to easily bypass enemy camps and get to my destination, from where I've been trying out pirate missions. It seems to be working out so far!
                                                                  • Eliot Lefebvre: I've been enjoying a bit of offline fun going back through my collection of Mega Man games. Right now I'm working through Mega Man X4 idly. I'm also going to be trying to clock in a little more time on WoW in my relentlessly silly goal to outfit my paladin in a very specific suit of armor, and if I can find the time I'm thinking of giving DDO a shot.
                                                                  • James Egan: You down with ODST? Yeah you know me!
                                                                  • Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): I just had to reformat my drives. As such, I'll be playing the "install/patch all the MMOs" game on my desktop while I play Earth Eternal or Fallen Earth on my laptop. Such an exciting weekend. w00t.
                                                                  • Kyle Horner (@kylehorner): Champions Online is calling... Will I answer? Yeah, probably!
                                                                  • Seraphina Brennan (@sera_brennan): Parents are coming out for a weekend, so I'm taking them out to a nice place in town, and might take in a movie. Board games and roleplaying will also be included this weekend, sans parents, of course. MMO-wise, I'd really like to have some time to play Aion and Champions, please.

The problem, as always, comes down to countless available MMOs and only 24 hours in a day. So what's a gaming blogger to do? There are tough choices that need to be made. So, for the curious, here's what the Massively team is playing this weekend:

                                                                    • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): Having spent much of this week in EVE Online preying mercilessly on miners in wormhole space, I plan to take a break from piracy to make a little ISK. I'll be blitzing some class 5 sleeper anomalies with a few buddies using a new strategy that combines remote armor repair ships with energy transfers and ECM. Other than that I'll be catching up on some reading and getting some hours in on a game design project.

Even though it's the biggest MMO on the block, our friends at WoW.com cover it so comprehensively that it seems silly for us to duplicate their efforts. But WoW is an MMO too, and it only makes sense to talk about it when there's news. So, from here on out, we'll be co-opting WoW.com's coverage when appropriate. When you see a post on Massively that says "WoW.com" in the upper left (as in the image above) with an unfamiliar writer's name -- that means you're seeing a post directly from our WoW-centric sister site!
